Orange Krush Class of 2013

I love seeing this, seeing any time the beloved are ranked.
But I would appreciate an explanation.
I understand how we can move up 4 spots when we don't play.
Others move down.
But how does our defensive rating move up 2 points?
That must be something other than what I'm guessing it is.
Thanks in advance
Most of these algorithms work by doing a mathematical regression to the full season's worth of data. When more data come in, the output changes for every team. A simple way to think about it is that while we didn't play, we learned a bit more about Kansas's, CMU's, Nebraska's, and Penn State's offenses. Based on all of that, our defense looks slightly better than they did before, and not just relative to other teams' defenses.
A simple example is Kansas. When we beat them it was a ranked win at home. As they've shown themselves to be a mediocre 1-5 team, our win isn't as impressive. The computer rankings account for that by considering our win over Kansas as we see them now, not how we saw them in Week 2.
