In all honesty I kinda of wished they left earlier. The circadian adjustment in general is very under appreciated aspect of being "prepared".smart
not sure what other teams have been doing , but the visiting team on these cross country games has been getting hammered
They did leave earlier than they normally would... not sure if that's enough. In all honesty I kinda of wished they left earlier. The circadian adjustment in general is very under appreciated aspect of being "prepared".
When you emphasize not beating yourself this is an easy place to start.
It will actually be interesting to see how Illinois adjusts in this area. A 12:30 Pacific time start is a 2:30 Central time start, so Illinois could stay on more of a Central time schedule. The best benefit of leaving on Thursday is really to have a full day to get the travel funk out of everyone’s systems following a long flight. In all honesty I kinda of wished they left earlier. Which is exactly what Illinois Football as an organization needed. We could have probably gotten a coach who'd have us higher in recruiting rankings, or some schematic wunderkind, but for God's sake we couldn't even apply a sticker on our helmet correctly. Some head coaches are coordinators at heart, some are players at heart, fans, pundits, whatever.
Bielema is a football ops guy at heart. He's like the world's most overqualified GA. It's no wonder Belichick liked him.
He would stand up there and talk about process minutiae until the beat writers fell asleep if they'd let him.
And yes, leaving earlier to adjust to the travel is an excellent idea so long as they can get the extra day's work in Eugene okay, a subject BB has thought about in detail without a doubt.
Exactly, so no jet lag at all, just “travel funk”.It will actually be interesting to see how Illinois adjusts in this area. One trillion percent.Which is exactly what Illinois Football as an organization needed. We could have probably gotten a coach who'd have us higher in recruiting rankings, or some schematic wunderkind, but for God's sake we couldn't even apply a sticker on our helmet correctly.
Sorry, your post made this far too good to pass up.I think we need to pull out the camo uni's this weekend for our duck hunting excursion. /s
Which is what I would do. It's not as if they're flipping from day shift to night shift with no sleep in between. It will actually be interesting to see how Illinois adjusts in this area. I live in socal now, but find it easier to adjust when flying from east to west rather than west to east. Maybe it's just me, or where I live now, but it is easier to adjust to the time difference.Exactly, so no jet lag at all, just “travel funk”.
I once had to make a quick trip to the U.K. to observe an experimental manufacturing process being trialed just after midnight in England. I deliberately stayed on CST the entire time and returned home w/o jet lag. Time in the low oxygen plane can be tiring, but going a day early should take care of it.
Whoever applied the block "I" on their helmets did it so they looked straight while the helmet was resting on a table, but on the players' heads, it was crooked.I feel dumb asking this, but I see so many references to this and I lack all of the background/history on it. Could somebody explain it to me fully? What happened, why was it a problem, and am I correct in thinking it's fixed now? Maybe with some pictures to visually illustrate the point for me? Thanks in advance!
In my opinion that is the optimal role of a HC. Ya other things can work and do all the time but I think that approach most easily and consistently creates an environment for everyone to succeed, players and coaches. Glad BB is coaching the illini. Some head coaches are coordinators at heart, some are players at heart, fans, pundits, whatever.

Coincidentally, Duck hunting season begins this weekend in Central Illinois...
I personally think the time zone issue (jet lag etc) is blown way out of proportion. Jet lag doesn't really happen till you travel more than 3 time zones and jet lag is one of the factors in circadian rythme. So it's a non issue. I traveled the US for 30 years and never had any issues with changing time zones. Illinois is a 2 time zone change and a 4 1/2 hour flight, that's not much at all. I'd rather be in my own bed an extra day than be in a hotel somewhere for an extra day.In all honesty I kinda of wished they left earlier. The rule of thumb is you need one day to adapt per hour of change. Two hours is peanuts and there’s no need to adapt since we play at 2:30 central. Just stay on home time and ignore local time. The Ducks are the ones who need to rise early.I personally think the time zone issue (jet lag etc) is blown way out of proportion. Also, going west is a bit easier on the body than going east.
I use to prefer keeping the trips shorter. Example: I'd fly from PDX at about noon to NYC arriving that evening. Next day I'd have a 9 am, 11 am 1 pm and 3 pm meeting and catch a 6:30 pm flight back to PDX getting home around 9-10 pm
