They need to get Ivisic eligible ASAP... his shot, movement, and defense looked pretty darn good and he was our most impressive player IMO.

Ole Miss is going to be good, but we still can't let teams shoot that many wide open threes.

Seemed like Kasparas was surprised the whole game by the lack of foul calls he was getting... Ole Miss was very physical/handsy on defense and it never felt like our guys turned up the intensity to match that.

Can't wait for Nov. 4th!!!

First game together, true road game, experienced opponent vs youth, etc. A lot of what happened today is expected. I was actually pretty encouraged. Ole miss shot the lights out, not just from 3 but it felt like every turnaround fadeaway they put up went in. So I think we were a little closer than the score indicated.

Bright spots to me were, in no particular order:
1. Big T. He’s not just a rim protector and a shooter, he’s got skill. Got his hands on quite a few balls in the paint and has a nice soft touch.
2. Ben’s D. His shot was off and he definitely got cooked a few times but I thought he moved his feet pretty well for his size. By way of comparison, I think he guarded better on the perimeter than Marcus did last year.
3. DGL. Clearly taken a step, think earns a rotation spot for sure, and, previewing my negatives a bit, but might push into the starting lineup if Kylan doesn’t step up,
4. Morez. As advertised. Think he will win us some games this year with second chance points and toughness.
5. As clunky as the offense was, we still put up 74 despite 22 turnovers against and aggressive D.

Negatives:
1. Kylan- almost seemed disinterested at times. He’s gotta pick it up.
2. Ty- our most experienced player looked lost.
3. Will- can see the talent but needs to dial back the hero ball.
4. Covering bigs on the perimeter out of drop. Their bigs shot lights out. I bet they had 6 3’s between them but they were wide open. Gotta figure out who is picking up the 5 man when T is in drop.
5. Too many hands down on the perimeter.

Brad picked Ole Miss for a reason. I’m guessing they will have a week plus of Brad practices to get ready for the season. Im sure we will have times again this year where the wheels come off but should be fun to watch this team improve.

Our handles . . . we have none. Some of the poorest ball handling (turnovers) I’ve seen since . . . I don’t know when. A lot to work on, it will be an interesting year. I L L

I’m happy they scrimmaged so we could all watch. I understand why, especially for a young team (chemistry and experience), they would rather do it privately.

Definitely some things to work on. Brad didn’t even yell so you know he was full in the assessment mode. He will make changes based on the gaps he sees.

Speed and athleticism is not our team strength, and strength at certain positions/players is lacking.

Plus, traveling and the early day start are things that may need additional adjustments for the players.

I’m excited to see the growth in the next game.

Slightly hot Ole Miss game takes:

KJ and Riley are talented but aren’t even close to being all big ten, let alone NBA ready. They are young kids who have a lot to figure out on both ends of the floor. Both played hero ball out there. They have a long way to go.

Dra is a dawg but he is undersized. He looks very improved and that’s great to see. But, if he’s the focal point of our offense, that isn’t ideal.

Humrichous has a nice stoke but he is gonna get cooked on defense all year. He’s certainly not a 5, small ball or otherwise.

Tomi looks great but is still ineligible at this time. If he’s not eligible… oh boy…

Rez showed great effort but he is extremely raw.

Tre White is Tre White. Kind of know what to expect at this point.

Ty Rogers is Ty Rogers. Kind of know what to expect at this point.

I feel like Kylan was the biggest disappointment. He was sloppy with the ball. I expected more from a veteran coming from a high major program. He needs to be our floor general but he’s turnover prone. He’s not even close to being an NBA prospect at this time.

Brad has quite a tall order ahead of him getting this group to gel together. He has to figure it out quickly. The non-conference schedule is absolutely brutal this year.
Yes it is a tall order and everyone knew that. We have went through this the last 3 years or so. It may work out and it may not. I choose to believe it will. We will be fine come conference play. It may be a little rough at first though.

There was zero off ball movement which was a major contributor to the number of turnovers.
Yep, way too much dribbling but as even the clueless SEC announcers noticed, the guy with the ball rarely had an open team mate to throw the ball to, so naturally dribbling aimlessly is the result. That'll be fixed fairly quickly by Brad as he whittles down to a 7-8 man rotation, IMO.

Plus side is DGL did appear to make the soph jump as advertised. Morez looked good too. Jakuconis needs to adjust to the pace and angles of the college game quickly. I think Boswell might need to play the point for the first couple of games and let KJ give spot minutes so he can get acclimated.

Negatives are Defense lacked intensity and overall quickness. We just don't understand defensive leverage. Way too much dribbling by everyone especially our 3s. I also was underwhelmed by Tre White. I know it's one game but I keep getting Alex Legion vibes.

This could end up being kind of like the 2019-2020 season, where it took a while for things to gel, but when they did, that team looked really good at the end. Unfortunately we didn't get to see how that team would play in March, but we were all very excited about that team, even though they went 3-3 in the month of December, dropping games to Mizzou, Maryland, and Miami.

BU has earned the benefit of the doubt. There are definitely question marks with this team but I'd rather have him in charge of finding the answers than anyone else.

Its not us that's projecting KJ and Riley as lottery picks. Evidently the NBA guys dont know what they're looking at either.
First, NBA drafts young guys based on potential. They likely aren't ready. Doesn’t mean they can't go lottery.

Second, they haven't "looked" at anything except the same tape we have. All evaluations are subject to change based on, you know, evidence.

Third, this game doesn't change my opinion one bit. It's. One. Game. And. Early.

That's why we play this game when it doesn't count I suppose. The good news is, Brad won't be lacking for problems to try and solve.

Good post. I was going to make your first point. There’s a good chance KJ doesn’t reach his full potential this year but gets drafted because he projects well a couple years down the road. To me, even with the turnovers, he looked so talented and could get his shot off effortlessly. Riley i could see needing one more year to prove it.

It may be time to start warming this machine up. Not sure which was more painful to watch - Illini football on Saturday or Illini basketball on Sunday. Keeping the faith for both teams as their seasons go on, ILL.

This is exactly why you play these. Call me crazy today’s result is better than if it was inverse. It’s an exhibition game. You play you learn you improve. Some of the takes are amazing - mid season form on the board!
Losing is never, ever, ever better than winning. Not under any scenario is it better. That's a self comforting thought given the outcome.

A good group of guys learn even if they win by 20.

I think the this is a good group of guys. Win

Hopefully this will help those here who've been dialing up unreasonable expectations for this team reign it in along with all of that "Fab Five" and "Why aren't we ranked in the top 20?" stuff. This is a really young team with some talent but next to no experience working together. Expect a lot of growing pains, particularly early in the season.

Not the results we were looking for but was invaluable for all our new players. We found out what it's like to go up against high quality basketball players and athletes who have played together and play in your face hard nose defense. Not like when we're practicing against ourselves. Our threes weren't really falling early because we were having to work harder and shoot them quicker than what we've been used to I'm sure. It shows our team that a lot of things we get by with in practice aren't going to fly when your playing tougher competition not to mention the pace that they will play at. Brad can definitely use this as a teachable moment and if they soak it all in we will be were we need to be come march.

kasparas is not enough ready to play to be a one and done. we overrated him coming in. might develop into the future, but not nearly that immediate impact freshman people were calling for.

much of the same for riley except it seemed like people were higher on kj.
James Harden played his first college game against the Illini in 2007. He was terrible.
