Finally got to watch the replay. Lots of talk here about DGL having a bad day. Obviously the shots didn’t fall, but I thought he played within the system, took great shots, and still looked extremely composed. I think he’s gonna have a great year.
2nd game in a row where DGL failed to pass ahead to an open teammate on a fast break and had to settle for free throws as a result.

I listened to the play by play with Barnhart and Dion. They are good together. But what I heard leaves me to question a few things. It sounded like SIUE got several layups and 27 offensive rebounds. I think Brad won't be happy about that. Free throw shooting for this group of marksmen should be an asset but not last night, left too many points at the line. With our size we should never be outrebounded. It wasn't one of their best shooting performances, but they still hung 90 up.
Just a note I thought was a jab at Coleman. I don't think Coleman ever got the tip on jump ball- Ivisic has 2 already. Cleanup a couple of things and get ready for the big game at Alabama.
Guirrier was the one usually doing the jump ball and often didn’t even try for it. I assumed by design?

Much slower pace tonight, at just 68 possessions. 90 points in 68 possessions is good enough for 1.32 PPP. First game, they were 1.33 PPP offensively. So effectively the same offensive game, a similar defensive game, at a slower pace, leads to a 32 point win instead of a 45 point win.
I was pleasantly surprised by the defensive improvements 👏

My concern is not having a go to guy when we NEED a bucket to stop a run or we need a winning play at the end of the game. Last year we had two with one being an All American. Too early to see if someone like that emerges. That guy looks to have to be KJ, but it's TBD.
Tomi looks pretty much like an instant bucket out there so if we need two I think the combo of him with KJ will be the first option imo. Will have to see if that holds when he is up against another 7+ down there

To see how we're doing on cupcakes compared to the rest of the Big Ten, I ran the numbers in this table. Only teams in yellow have played 2 games, so I just doubled the differentials for teams who played 1 game. As you'd guess, Illinois is near the top. (The rankings are hiding after the team names, if those matter to you.)

Oregon looked good against Montana

I was at the game last night... Two observations.

Reilly could struggle to get his mid-range jump shot off... it's not a quick trigger and he got blocked a couple times. Probably needs more weight and work on creating space. Was impressed with his ability to attack the offensive glass though. It seemed like he was always sliding in to get a hand on the ball.

We need to do a better job getting 2 hands on the rebounds... SIUE was constantly poking the ball away from us when we went to get a rebound.. Rez did great... if he gets his hands on it, it is not going anywhere.

Our defense will probably go through struggles when we play top teams but currently it’s not a stretch to say this could end up being the best Illini offense we’ve ever seen, even better than 2005. The ball movement is unreal and KJ is already NBA level in terms of his vision. Even if we end up in a lot of shootouts I like our chances in most of them.

Literally the easiest name on the team to spell correctly. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Where is this 27 orb number coming from? According to sports reference SIUE had 14 orb on 52 missed shots. They were 14/19 33 trb. We were 13/30 43 trb. Not great but not terrible either.

I know its early but we have 3 players averaging 1.6 ppp. Crazy.

Again early, but KJ assist percentage is 50! Only 2 games but seriously. If memory serves Deron's was in the mid 20s. A big number over a much longer period but still.

Watched the first half and it was too helter skelter on offense and on the fast breaks so I figured the second half would be more of the same and I am an old man living in the EST, so zzzzzzz.

Checked the box score this morning and it looked better than the game did. Toss out the two guys were Ofer's (hope DGL did not regress to his mean) on 3 pt attempts and percentages looked ok. Balanced scoring, few turnovers, good assists and rebounds, but it just doesn’t look and feel like a TEAM……. yet.

Only saw one good cut and feed to the basket in the first half, lots of dribbling.

And he played solid, in your face defense.

Team continues to improve. You can tell the coaches are trying to figure out combinations of players that can play well together

Defense and rebounds need to be worked on

Ohio State, no cupcake, maybe an asterisk next to them.

That’s a world where Illinois has none of them.
