Because of geography, we get what should be more scheduling gimmes in football and basketball than anyone else in the conference with more games against Northwestern. We have to take advantage of that favorable scheduling when it presents itself.

We can take time to come together against Alabama and Tennessee.

I know I’m in the minority but I’ll give him till January as a starter. If a situation like tonight occurs again then obviously you’d be foolish to keep him out there/continue starting him. First B1G game. I’m giving him a shot to respond next game. Although Wisconsin does start two 7 footers so Morez may be getting a start regardless of what happened tonight.
Domask started slowly last year too. I’m not ready to write him off just yet, but I agree he should not have gotten the minutes he did last night. We have plenty of guys who need those minutes if he has an off night.

Humrichous, KJ, Ivisic, and Riley are not physical players and all can be abused by stronger guys. NW had more than one of those types on the floor at all times, and hunted matchups for bootyball all night. In a game like that Rez and Tre might have been better choices but I'm not a BB genius either so who knows why the staff made the choices they did. Lots of bad shot choices and multiple blown layups kept the game closer than it should have been and when you give an inferior opponent multiple chances to beat you don't be surprised when they capitalize on one of them.

Also I hate the 5 out. I get the strategy but clogging the head of the key with multiple players makes it harder to take a defender off the bounce not easier. And other than Ivisic we don't have great roll off the screen types. Need some sets with a big guy posting up on the block, make somebody have to defend down low.

Is it just my observation... why is Will Riley's shot so ugly? At the beginning of the year (Alabama let's say), he shot such a smooth ball.

Rn it's sideways and leaning... idk...

I think there is more than one reason we lost. First, very bad shot selection by several guys. It wasn't just Humrichous shooting badly. As a team we took a lot of very poor shots. Second, the team created very few good shots. We were very slow to move the ball, which meant that we didn't punish NW for their defensive overplay on the perimeter. Our guys were reduced, or allowed themselves to be reduced, to relying exclusively on the three down the final stretch of the game. Third, we were physically overpowered at both ends of the floor, which meant that NW got some good shots in the paint while we reduced to long range, off balance threes at the other end. We made some of tough threes, too, but it would have been a lot smarter to run offense that generated better shot attempts.
1) need to run an offense
2) making 3s (like against Arkansas) makes team look really good
3) coaches need to read the room and make adjustments (both on offense and defensive)
4) northwestern pushed our starting offense so far out on the court. Illinois settled for shooting 3s
5) northwestern ran the same set in 2nd half with good results - what changes did Illinois make on defense?
6) would love to see +\- for this game
7) northwestern isn’t a horrible team
8) loss disappointing and avoidable but young teams will disappoint and hopefully learn

This is pretty clear though - the lineup that worked best was when we pushed it out to like 11 with that big run. I believe it was: Boswell (or DGL), KJ, Riley, Morez, Tomi.

Didn't go back to it at all... don't think the foul situation was all that unmanageable either.

There is something called "prescence", Morez on the floor created issues for NU. Tomi can play the stretch 4 position as a passer, shooter, pick...

Ben's defensive presence was the worst I have seen all year. He seemed reluctant to be by his assigned player. No rebounding presence. Good block near end of game.

He drew some fouls early in the year by folding his legs up and falling down like he got hit and he seems to be doing it now every time there is a guy close to him. It's like he's thinking more about drawing a foul and not about making the shot.

While the refs let the game get way too rough, taking us out of our game, we had every opportunity to win. That said, this is one of those Underwood head-scratchers that we see a few of every year. Zero adjustments made, weird rotations; it is what it is.

I love Coach, and we're lucky to have him here, so I've learned to accept these and hope we don't have one of these pop up in the tourney.

Boswell isn’t stepping up as that floor general and veteran leader we need in crunch time to manage the clock down and run the offense for a good open look. Frustrating.

Hes was coming off his best game of the season against Arkansas and looked like he was becoming exactly that with the physical drives and defense. This game was definitely a step back.

Am I losing my mind or was it not KJ that was getting switched on to Martinelli especially in OT?
I rarely see us force a team to make defensive switches to get the matchup we want, but every other team known to man does it...not just against us.

It's his stubbornness...it costs us 2 to 3 games every year

We have far too much talent in KJ & Kylan to not get better looks than we did down the stretch. We've been thirsty for lead guards like them for years so that in crunch time we have facilitators. Instead we got 1 on 1 step back 3 ball (aka hero ball). Brad can pound the table all he wants about Northwestern being good, but I beg to differ. That is a VERY mediocre team.

At the 10:10 mark, KJ hits a 3 to make the score 46-36. Illini score 10 points to NU's 20 in final 10 minutes. This forces OT, NU was overplayong the 3 pt shot and having Nicholson defend the drives. Forcing us take contested 3's or open 3's from the corner.

Playing Morez and Tomi together would of helped in this situation. Hi-lo offense and increase offensive rebounds.

This game was called at LEAST three different ways throughout. This argument continues to lack any footing.

If you want to say that Riley was abused, then show numbers and film. Besides, this is all coming from your own assumption that calls for fewer Ben minutes meant more Riley minutes... when Will got 30 and Morez got 12.

If you feel like you're catching up now, take a pause and do more of that.
So your implying that BU made a mistake not putting the 185 lb freshman on the two 230 lb power forwards from NW. Well, I disagree and think BU sees these guys bang each other in practice and he put our best options on them defensively. They are bangers and tough to guard. We don't have a TSJ type guy on D anymore. Certainly Riley was not BUs choice for a reason

i agree, he is very complimentary of our program and is a very insightful and smart coach
I met him and his team at Lurie Children’s Hospital several years ago, visiting young patients. Class act.

@Dan, maybe you should consider changing the site name to IllinoisLunacy instead of Loyalty. It's one game lost (albeit a bad loss by the end of the season), and the majority of posters today have gone off the deep end. Maybe Xanax all around for everyone?
