Saw where Marshall will not be playing the Independence Bowl against Army because 36 damn So called teammates entered the portal. How Sad college sports is becoming...
This is not a typical situation.

Marshall HC who is well liked be the players left to take Southern Miss job because the school and him couldn't agree to an extension. Many of these players are likely following him to Southern Miss.

A fix to that would be changing the portal window back a month.
A fix to that would be to suspend the team backing out from participating in the next football season. See how many teams opt out then.

I'll show myself out right after y'all

I think we're all forgetting we already have players opting out 4 games into the season. Moving the portal window won't fix anything. The portal, NIL, playoffs, etc. aren't the problem. The reason we have all that is the problem.

The fix was to not be aholes to the college players that were bringing millions of dollars to the program to the point where something like NIL rules had to be litigated. If common sense would have prevailed two decades ago (longer?), we wouldn't be in this situation.

This was always going to be the end game the second money was at play.

I get your point - but the who is accountable?
The NCAA and the rules. It makes absolutely no sense that the Winter portal is open only for the month of December (and ends before many teams play their bowl game). It should be open the month after the season ends (which would be January).

This would not fix the entire problem of opt outs, but it would limit the number of players not playing due to entering the portal.

I know the notion of a student-athlete is quaint, but for any normal student, it is natural for transfer decisions to be made in December so that they can be at their new college for the second semester in January. From that perspective, it makes sense for the transfer portal to open in December: regular season games are completed, coaches are getting hired and fired everywhere, and the transfer process needs to be completed in a timely manner to enroll for second semester. It sucks for teams playing in non-playoff bowl games, but this is one area where the university presidents have to at least give lip service to the fact that these are still students and allow them to transfer for the second semester just like any other non-athlete student.

The bigger question is whether the notion of any transfer portal restrictions at all are legally enforceable if ever challenged (like pretty much everything else in college sports at this point). These students didn’t collectively bargain or sign employment contracts stating that they could only transfer schools at specific window timeframes during the year. It’s simply a rule imposed by fiat by the NCAA and, as we have seen, they are getting struck down by the courts on all levels.

Moving back the portal window until the end of all bowls/playoffs leaves scant time for those late playing players to do visits and be able to enroll in time for spring semester classes. For example, the last day to add classes at UNC is Jan 13th.

The issue to me is that the window is only open for less than 3 weeks in December. You could theoretically extend the window into early January. It still gives players the opportunity to enter the portal in December to have more time, but it also allows some players the opportunity to delay the decision until after their bowl is played. Players can enter the portal and still technically play in their bowl game. However, many coaches will likely not want these players in the game, as they see the game as development for guys that will be on the team next year. Those teams in the playoff will likely have a differing view, as winning is all that matters, so I could see a situation where a player enters the portal, but the coach and player still want them to play.

The concern brought up was players opting out for Marshall leaving them without viable roster for their Dec 28 bowl game (same date as the portal closing). The coach was leaving the program, so many players wanted to likely follow Coach Huff to Southern Miss. I am sure a majority of those players entering the portal would have liked to still play their bowl game, but were left will little choice but to enter the portal when they did. Sure, they could have still played for the team in the bowl game, but the extent of the disfunction related to the extent of disruption likely left the situation dire.

The Division 1 Council of the NCAA is the group that determines and votes on things like the portal window. I don't pretend to know what all goes into that, but suffice to say these portal window periods were not arrived at in a vacuum. There are 40 members on the D1 council, representing schools, conferences, administrators and even two student athletes.

Oh yeah, and the Chair of the council? Guy named Josh Whitman (May '24 thru June '26).

If he is starting QB for his dream school, why would he leave, when he has a chance at a Notional Title? I assume PSU has enough funds to make a reasonable offer. If it is just money, that sucks!
Pribula wasn't the starting QB this year, and it is highly possible that he was not projected to be the #1 next year. It does not necessarily have to be all about the money. If he was looking to be the #1 elsewhere (with a decent NIL package), the current system requires him to enter the portal before Dec 28. He simply cannot wait for the Spring window; otherwise he loses many opportunities. Really a tough situation to navigate.

Yeah, I assumed he was privvy to the fact that Aller was coming back and knew if he was going to have a shot he needed to portal away. Sucks he won't get playoff ride experience but gotta look out for yourself.

If a player is eligible at their new school immediately, that could create a unique opportunity for a team.

“Hey kid, our top QB is going pro, come in and win our playoff game for us.”

Players are not eligible to transfer into a new school and and play at that second school in the same season.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! You easily win the funniest post of the month for putting "classes" and "UNC" in the same sentence unironically!

Good one Dude!

I stand corrected, thank you. I thought he was the starter. I am old and forget things. :)
