I mean, looks like he prioritized new players over retainment. I would assume there were end of year meetings, players made staying commitments, but didn’t follow up with those. And behind the scenes was ongoing obviously. Just have to work it both ways these days.
Wisconsin has the biggest persecution complex in college sports, aided and abetted by some journalists who fear Badger dystopia mean less clicks and eyeballs. Rather than admit their run is over, they'd rather point fingers at others.

I meant bad enough that the same player is worth more in the minor league than the major league. That’s upside down.
is it? or maybe the same kid isnt an nfl player so he's making it while he can. how many spots are out there
for NFL QB's not enough for every good college QB.

How does Luke know it was the coaches who were recruiting? At this point even some of the average players have agents who are looking for a bag (albeit small by comparison) by calling around and looking for a landing spot. Didn't Brett say he stopped taking calls from running backs who wanted to come? That had nothing to do with "coaches recruiting players." Playas gonna play (and play others and use agents). Granted some coaches stepping over the line too but tough reality. End of story. Move on Luke.
maybe he should look in the mirror. why are they leaving coach?

Lol that’s why in the other thread people saying Illinois doesn’t have a favorable schedule to make some noise again is crazy.

That schedule has 4 almost guaranteed losses (at Michigan, at Oregon, at Alabama, OSU) and then all those other games even at home are coin flips. That’s a 3-9 season if you can’t close out 1 score games.
There is a very good chance that Fickell is not the head coach by the time Illinois rolls into Camp Randall.

Hell if he loses to a poorly coached Locksley team in late November his seat will be as hot as Locksley’s should be.

My favorite Illinois/Wisco football fact… with Bert’s 2022 victory over Wisco he not only got Paul Chryst canned but also held off Chryst from becoming the 2nd most winning coach in Badger football history…

The current #2 on that list? None other than Bret Bielema.

Alvarez - 119 Wins
BERT - 68 Wins
Chryst - 67 Wins

Hilarious.

This tells me we are going all-in on JC Davis and trying to bring him back, maybe??? Not enough money to keep both, so we had to choose?
Probably, but also... I doubt Crisler would've started over Henderson at that RG spot. And even if he did, some pretty hefty competition for reps there.

Henderson played over Crisler on many occasions this year as well.

They are very likely stuck with him. He has a buyout of $40 million. I don't think UW is particularly happy with McIntosh for giving him that contract either.

we have lost a few OL in the portal so i would assume Illinois will go and get a player or two in the portal for depth Purposes.

Retention will be expensive, we have to assume. Insiders, can we keep our QB, OLB, CB, LT away from the NFL and/or other NIL offers with our rumored NIL budget?

If they can, seems like some serious (probably the most in my lifetime) momentum for the Illini Football program headed into the Spring of 2024/Fall of 2025.

I think it just means Henderson was going to start over him anyway and if he gets one more year in college, he may as well go somewhere he can start and earn some $$, I don't blame him in this case, we do need depth along the OL, so will need to pick up some depth pieces even if we get JC back and the starters are all the same as the bowl game

Just having that continuity is huge - I can't recall a year we had the entire starting OLine back

quite frankly, there wasn't a choice. WRT to Crisler portaling, the writing is on the wall here (since mid-season, anyway)

I noticed Crisler looked pretty disgruntled on the sideline at times and having to be consoled by team mates. I don't think he was happy to have his reps cut and it wasn't going to get any better for him.

That’s the point really. If there was no barrier between the major and minor leagues, the NFL would draw all of the best talent due to its massively higher revenue stream. Salaries are sometimes higher in the NCAA only due to eligibility restrictions. Remove the barriers and 2nd-3rd string NFL talent would scoop up key college positions, often for less than schools pay in NIL for top “student athletes” in the constrained NCAA market. Scarcity drives prices up, Econ 101.

In 1990 I traveled to Argentina for the first time, taking a cab from the Buenos Aires airport to my hotel. The taxi was a brand new 1960 vintage Ford Falcon, complete with vinyl bench seats and three-on-the-tree transmission. Time travel! Cool! But how and why? Argentina had so severely restricted imports that the Falcon was still competitive. That’s what’s happening to NIL inside the NCAA’s protective bubble.

The result of this goofy protected market is a bidding war for scarce talent, with success on the playing field increasingly dependent on megadonors. It’s becoming a fundraising completion rather than an athletic competition. NIL caps might level the playing field again? But they might be illegal IF anyone could still argue NIL is really about Name, Image, or Likeness. By now though it’s obviously just a salary. Will the NCAA’s bubble burst, allowing competition from NFL talent? Massive donor money puts economic stress on their bubble like pressure from rising water on a dam.

Crisler should be as happy as anyone not being drafted...he just got gifted a free extra year of eligibility, and an NIL market where the reps he took over the past few years are worth will be worth something to somebody, so he gets an unexpected payday. Good for him!

I suspect we'll be looking to add some OL, but maybe nobody expecting to be the day 1 starter?
