The completely empty arena at Penn State is so embarrassing.
That's what it was like at Assembly Hall at the end of Groce's tenure. Fast forward a few years. Illinois had an announced attendance of 15,544 for a Sunday afternoon XMAS break non-conference meaningless game against a winless Chicago State less than a week ago. What a difference Brad and his assistant coaches have made at Illinois and for Big Ten basketball!

Is it still considered repotism if they're deserving of the position? I thought nepotism meant they were getting preferential treatment over others who are more deserving otherwise.

PS, I'm asking because i don't know, and not saying this is so (before someone comes along and pounds me into the ground lol)
It would really only be true nepotism if Ian Eagle owned the network and hired his own son. I would consider that nepotism even if he was really good at his job. But Ian Eagle is just an employee as well. I'm sure he helped open some doors but he's not the one making hires.

I'm sure Noah got a leg up in terms of having more connections and opportunities to get his career off the ground. But he has clearly put in the work on his craft and has talent so it's not egregious.

Didn't a kid with the last name of Jordan wear the O&B?
Probably neither here nor there but he started as a walk on before earning a scholarship his junior year. He actually played quite a bit his junior year.

I don't know that MJ really pulled many strings to help put his kids get ahead on the court. I think that would be antithetical to who he is.

Going back to what I was talking about regarding basketball arenas in the Oregon pre-game thread, Penn State is the case study for why you don't build an arena with ambitious capacity. They play in a mausoleum that's WAY too big for their standard attendance. They would have been much better off with a 10,000 seat arena. Heck, right now they'd be a lot better of playing back at Rec Hall.

Nepotism is defined by Merriam Webster dictionary as "favoritism (as in appointment to a job) based on kinship". There is no doubt that Brad's initial selection of Tyler to join his staff is classic nepotism as I strongly doubt that Tyler went through the formal interview hiring process for a job posting at Illinois. Having said that, my initial post about nepotism was in no way intended to suggest that Tyler was not qualified to do what Brad hired him to do or that he has not proven he fully deserves his role on the coaching staff and that his future in college basketball coaching is anything other than a bright one. In the words of the original Mayor Daley, "If a man can't put his arms around his sons and help them, then what's the world coming to?"

Ace Bailey shot 48% of Rutgers’ shots and scored 53% of their points in a loss to the Loosiers.

I’m no hoops guru, but it seems like it would be pretty easy to game-plan for them…

While the results have been great the last few years, I don't think Tyler being on the staff has been drama free. It's been a bumpy road behind the scenes with some of the other current and former assistant coaches.

One of Maryland or Oregon is going to start the conference season 1-3, which is going to be an early tough hole.

Sleepers did their top 10 freshmen on their pod today, had KJ 5th behind Flagg, Harper, Fears and Derik Queen (?).

Another thing on Torvik, he's got player efficiency ratings which you can sort by class, so here's the top 10 freshmen by Torvik efficiency:

EDIT: Riley is 24th among freshmen right now.

I believe you are absolutely correct about Michael Jordan. I also think that most knew, including MJ, that Jeff, while an above-average player and good enough to play some for the Illini, that Jeff was not going to be NBA material. The big hope was for his second son, Marcus. He was a better player, although he ended up at the University of Central Florida, and again, while he was a very good player, better than Jeff, he didn’t quite live up to expectations. MJ also has a daughter who played basketball somewhere, too. The Jordans attended other school functions and were at graduation and always seemed pretty down to earth.
Side note. My stepsons (twins) went to the same middle school as Marcus and were friends with him. So, I got to drop them off at the MJ estate in Highland Park a few times. Security would let them in, but I had to stay out looking in through the big iron gate. That was one of my brushes with the rich and famous (I also met David Byrne once and there were a couple of other brushes).

And you may ask yourself, 'Is this Michael Jordan's beautiful house?'

I heard a few stories of incidents that played a part in the TA departure. Typical nepotism stuff (intentional or not), but it rubs people the wrong way.

@illini0440 don't blame you if you don't really want to get into this, but just thought I'd point you to this one
