Blame Ayo for starting this (I kid, I kid...I think...).If we as Illini fans are hoping that star recruits/transfers are looking to come to play at Illinois as a place that will help them get to the NFL, it is important that these guys at least mention they are from the University of Illinois (with their high school if they want). I would hope that they were proud of being Illini and would want to give their school some credit. I’m guessing Coach Bielema is disappointed from that respect as well…
Wasn't it Simeon Rice who started that trend (not just for Illinois, but in general) by saying he was from the School of Hard Knocks?Blame Ayo for starting this (I kid, I kid...I think...).
Really? I remember all kinds of positive publicity for EIU at that time, they were getting a lot of attention (though to your point was there really any long-term impact?). One example from SI:If you really think any star recruit or transfer is going to care about what school an NFL player mentions during their Sunday Night Football intro, you're more deluded than I thought. Bielema probably doesn't know much less care whether the players mention it.
Heck, by your logic my alma mater EIU should have gotten more highly rated recruits for all the times I got to hear "Jimmy Garoppolo, Eastern Illinois University".

Realizing that "the modern era" does not include one of the best Illini players who was in school at the time I was there . . .It was, I was just referring to the modern era
Right EIU did get publicity for having people like Garoppolo, Sean Payton, and even Ryan Pace in the league. But just Garoppolo mentioning the school's name had no marked impact on getting high level recruits, even by FCS standards. If anything, the program went backwards after he left though that was more due to mediocre (Kim Dameron) to bad (Adam Cushing) head coaching.Really? Yeah, I agree, BUT, I really wanted the Bengals in the Playoffs. I have a connection to Cincy since living there in my youth and they are my first NFL rooting interest. I think they are an exciting and fun team to watch. Struggled out of the gate, but have played really well at Seasons End.Denver up 38-0 over Kansas City's B team.
And for the record, I have zero issues with what the Chiefs did and would have done the exact same thing. Kansas City is under zero obligation to do anything other than what is in the best interest of its team. The Bengals and Dolphins has 17 games to not have to rely on another team to give them help.
