List of Bears interview requests, as of now. I'd normally assume that the top 5 are the "real" candidates, the rest are for background info, but these are the Bears so who knows...

Link
  • Aaron Glenn, Lions defensive coordinator
  • Mike Vrabel, former Titans head coach
  • Brian Flores, Vikings defensive coordinator and former Dolphins head coach
  • Arthur Smith, Commanders offensive coordinator and former Falcons head coach
  • Ben Johnson, Lions offensive coordinator
  • Mike McCarthy, current Dallas Cowboys head coach
  • Thomas Brown, Bears interim head coach
  • Anthony Weaver, Dolphins defensive coordinator
  • Mike Kafka, New York Giants offensive coordinator
  • Drew Petzing, Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator
  • Todd Monken, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator
  • David Shaw, Broncos senior personnel executive and former Stanford head coach

If history is any indication, the guy you’ve never heard of will be the pick. So, Anthony Weaver or Drew Petzing… Anyone know if either shares an agent with Poles? That could be the tie breaker.

Smith is the OC for the Steelers

I’m hoping the rejected request to interview McCarthy and the reported upcoming Pete Carroll interview are just next level gamesmanship by Bears to mask who they really want.
at least 1/2 the names on that list are on there for reasons totally other than the Bears actually wanting to maybe hire them . it’s part of the hiring gsme that gets played out every silly season

No Joe Brady? Bills OC. Interesting. I would have thought him to be 4-6th on the list.

Give me Mike Vrabel. The Bears need actual leadership. Not some dude that has been an OC with one the best o-lines, a very good QB, stud running backs and 2 really good wide receivers. Pass.

I am skeptical of Ben Johnson(to the Bears, specifically), if you're gonna be the NFCN why not just stay where you are at?

I actually like Pete Carroll a lot... it would balanced it out. John Fox(HC, No Super Bowl), Nagy(OC, no HC experience), Eberflus(DC, no HC experience), Carroll(HC, Super Bowl Win).

It's literally the only thing the Bears haven't tried yet!

Chicago Tribune and WHO TV here in Des Moines reporting the Bears are interviewing Matt Campbell. I don’t really see that happening.

Here's one of the better trackers I found for the coaching carousel:

Windy City Gridiron

Updates:
- Bears have announced that they completed their interview of Mike Vrabel
- Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn will interview on Saturday
- Pete Carroll interview will happen tomorrow
- Matt Campbell (ISU) and Kliff Kingsbury (Commanders OC) are also expected to interview for the job

Are you kidding me?

The same Pete Carroll that made maybe the stupidest play call ever. Who would have had a second SB ring if he would have handed the ball off to Lynch instead of passing on the one yard line….. Yes, the one…..

Would be par for the course in “Bears World”

According to The Score these are not face-to-face interviews. Some over the air thing. So 2 questions
1) If you are an in-demand applicant, are you going with the team that (A) picked you up in the limo, took you to the airport and flew you to Chicago in the corporate jet. Put you up in the finest suite in the finest hotel. Fed you whatever you wanted at the finest restaurants, and spent time with you. (B) the group that flew out to see you and gave you the same treatment. (C) The group that facetimed you?

Question 2) Do you see this virtual interview as a bad idea considering they have hired people who can't keep their pants on when theyu should be? They could be interviewing naked from the waist down.

The interviews this time of year can only be virtual interviews. In-person interviews can't begin until January 20 unless the coach you want is still alive in the conference title games. Those coaches have to wait until January 27, when either they were eliminated from the playoffs or have a bye week before the Super Bowl. Coaches on the Super Bowl teams are allowed to be interviewed until February 2 but are forbidden from talking to other teams after that until the day after the Super Bowl. Coaches on the Super Bowl teams can't interview in person with other teams during the bye week if they hadn't done an initial virtual interview earlier in January.

Per Johnson, cuz he’d be a HC in NFCN rather than an OC.

Every interview process is different, but perhaps for some of the "B tier" candidates (and I can clearly see Matt Campbell as a B tier candidate) they are going with the video interviews first and then bringing any "B tier" candidates who impress them in for an on-site interview.

From some fairly recent personal experience, I've been through this type of of process. It actually does make sense, because if you have the first step and someone either wows you or completely turns you off in the first step, you either don't waste the time and money for step 2 or you are convinced that bringing somebody in is 100% worth it.

1) Shorter "screening" interview in a video format.
2) If passing step 1, coming on site for a multi-hour, multiple interview process.

In the least surprising coaching hire ever, Mike Vrabel will be the head coach for the Patriots...

Below is the latest summary from Windy City Gridiron. Additionally they completed an interview with Thomas Brown today and are expected to check in again on Mike McCarthy after her was let go by Dallas. Marcus Freeman is also being rumored as a possible interview.

------

The Bears have several interviews still to come, but here are their confirmed and completed interviews from the first week: Mike Vrabel (hired in N.E.), Anthony Weaver, Drew Petzing, Mike Kafka, Pete Carroll, Aaron Glenn, Ben Johnson, and Ron Rivera (in person).

The Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs also reported that he believes the Bears have spoken with Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell.

Chicago assistant GM Ian Cunningham has interviewed with the Titans for their vacant general manager position.
