I hate saying this and I hope I'm wrong, but I've had this nagging feeling I can't shake.

Will feels like a potential Podz trajectory to me in some ways.

Freshman year getting footing in a system that doesn't rely on your offense but demands defense. And playing against guys that can check you more than you've ever experienced.

Sophomore year, look for a role where you're a ball dominant scorer and can showcase your talents, even if it's against lesser competition, thereby catching NBA attention.

I'm hoping someone can tell me why I'm way off.
I mean, many reasons you're way off here, but the primary is this: Riley is getting minutes to figure it out, averaging over 20 minutes a game. He's played 55% of the team's minutes this season.

Podz got 5% of the minutes, which is less than Carey Booth. He didn't get a chance because he didn't want to put in the work defensively.

People just gotta get over Podz, no major conference team wanted him after freshman year, he just got in a situation where he could shoot and do nothing else all year for Santa Clara and parlayed that into an NBA contract where he plays 20 minutes a game and can't shoot.

Difference is Will is seeing the court. Ball's just not bouncing his way yet and he's getting baptized by fire learning the physicality of college ball (and Big Ten ball especially). I think it's a bit early to draw any conclusions about Will. I would not be surprised if he has a trajectory like Coleman's sophomore year -- some tantalizing moments early in the season but takes until February to start putting all the pieces together, and then plays an important role in big games down the stretch.

Thanks for the honest responses. Like I say, it's an annoying nagging thought I've had and I don't have anyone else to talk to about it. I knew someone here could help me dispel it.

And just for the record I'm not hung up on Podz. I just noticed a few similarities, but I also knew I was probably looking at it wrong.

You meant this as sarcasm, right?

On the subject of efficiency margin...

Notes:
- MSU hasn't played in a week, now plays tomorrow at home vs Washington, so they'll probably hang out in the clouds of EM for another game at least before the schedule kicks in for them.
- Only 7 teams above water so far in conference play, due mostly to Illinois, Michigan, Purdue, Wisconsin and MSU blowing teams out.
- Indiana has played the easiest conference schedule to date, and has the toughest conference schedule moving forward. I still think they're a paper tiger, but other teams have kind of fallen off since conference play started.
- I still think Maryland is a good team, they've just had a rough schedule thus far.
- I do not think Rutgers is a good team, and they're the 3rd most likely team to miss the B1G tournament at this point. Lot of basketball to play yet, though, so they could suddenly click at some point, Defense is horrendous though.
- Illinois gave up 52 points on 80 possessions tonight, which is just silly.

Starters rebounds: 9,7,7,6,5 nobody under 5

+ guy off bench with 11
This^ I once asked then SIU coach Rich Herrin what he thought was the most important game stat in basketball. He said rebounding. He said your defense can only get the ball back one of three ways: turnover, rebound, or when it falls through the basket. It's the equivalent of a third-down stop in football. And every offensive rebound is an extra possession.
Penn State missed 45 shots. They got 6 offensive rebounds, and half of those were in the final 4 minutes. Illinois had 19 offensive rebounds. Simply amazing.
