If you had to choose between losing today or losing on Wednesday against PSU, which would you choose? I would choose losing today.
shouldn't lose to either one but I'd rather choose lose to PSU. they're a better team than USC both rebounding and in the NET and other analytics

This probably won't be popular, but I think Brad is much closer to what Illini fans used to view Bill Self as that what self actually is. A great recruiter with limited bench coaching chops.

That said, I like Brad and appreciate him a ton, but we have seen a lot of games where tactically he was outdone, and a lot of game where we have just had "dudes" who could overcome that by just taking the ball and making one on one plays. Ayo, Terrance, now KJ.

You can be highly successful with this model, and Brad has been. But you'll get a few games every year where we just get out-prepped or out-adjusted when the stars just can't take it over (or are injured).
I was an Illiniboard inhabitant (still remember Brumby and crew fondly) back when Self coached our team. It could be my old age acting up on me, but I don't remember this perception of Bill Self at all.

For whatever it's worth (and we could each define 'limited' in different ways), I think @BoiseBaller is mostly correct in his Self perception.

You hired Self 90% for his recruiting. Not saying his coaching was Zook-ian, but he was known much more for his connections and ability to bring people in.

Ummm.. We lost one home game during Self's 3 years here. One.
I was certainly aware of what we had.

Agree on the Brad part. I don't remember Self being viewed this way however....he was viewed as a great recruiter, and I always thought his in game coaching was pretty well regarded as well

If the team gets a F, then the fans get an F-

I know Krush was on break, but we could still give the team at least a little bit of a home court advantage. It doesn't seem like MSU, Purdue, Indiana, etc have as much of a problem with crowd noise on break as we do. Do they do something different than us?
I’m sure this has been mentioned already but it seems that our price point for tickets has exacerbated this. If you look at similar games at MSU and Purdue, there’s a significant price discrepancy and it’s unfortunate. Illinois is a top university attended by many upper-middle class students, but located in a town surrounded by farm communities filled with die hard fans that have cannot afford to fill up the sections to create an intimidating atmosphere. Adding on to that, the students attending Illinois grew up while the school was a bubble team at best. It might take a few years for that effect to pass over.

I'd put miami of ohio game right around the time of the Tennessee tech disaster on my list. Also Winthrop in 16. And it won't make the torvik list but the Dayton NIT game is on my list.
Yes, Miami (Oh) and Winthrop were pretty bad, as was North Florida in the first game of the season in 2015... though that was in Springfield. I don't believe any of these were massive upsets according to metrics. But certainly from an optics standpoint they were.

We've had our fair share of clunkers. Rarely have they considerably altered or defined a season. Occasionally, though, I do think they've been the bellwether of things to come.

First game I've been back to in two years. What a craptastic effort. Ran zero offense. Just one on one BS. And just ABUSED on ball screens. They made us look like a junior high team guarding that action.
I would argue at times they guard them quite well. Other times, like the USC game-not so much.

I’m glad I found this again. It’s a cool window into Brad’s coaching philosophy/tendencies in guarding ball screens…Very illuminating…Interesting stuff in my opinion.

If you scroll down there are some videos…

Won't recount the crazy stuff I did the night before games when I played small college football.
But I can see where an 11:00am home game might not be ideal even if these guys are far more serious about things than my teammates and I were. There are a lot more distractions at home.

Feeling good? What does that mean? There has to be a cause. It's all so strange 😕
There is a cause. KJ said (in the interview after USC game) it's a tendon inflammation. And that he will definitely play in the next game. I tried posting a translated interview, but mods deleted it / didn't approve.

After that shocking loss to USC, this game against the Hoosiers has now become crucial. I'm glad we'll have KJ for this one.

BU has been here 8 years, so we know what we have. On the good side, we will always have top 20 level talent and we will generally play hard. On the bad side, the offense has a boom/bust character to it, we lack discipline and don't do small things well (eg inbounds plays, tight screen action) and a well coached team will find our weaknesses and abuse them because we won't make adjustments. In individual games, we have a high ceiling but low floor; over the course of a season we have a high floor and an Elite 8 ceiling. It can get frustrating, but we can (and have) done a lot worse.
Brad has made the program nationally relevant and fun to watch again(for the most part). And it's definitely way better than the Weber(post Self recruits) and Groce era.

I think Brad will likely be the coach here until he retires or the wheels fall off a bit but I feel like he's kinda in the weird spot where it's difficult to hire a coach that would be an improvement but I have have very little confidence that he will ever get the program over the hump and win a championship.

While I think it will be frustrating at times but I'd take consistent good and fun seasons with tournament appearances as a floor over whatever it was the Groce and Weber did.

It was a video interview in Lithuanian language that a couple of Lithuanian basketball journalists took from KJ right after USC game. It's a pity I spent 1 hour transcribing and translating it only for the mods to not approve it. But yeah, KJ should be good to go for the next game.
Plz add the source video link to the thread that's all, didn't realize you transcribed it just seemed like copy&paste without any link. Thanks & Go Illini

I read an Izzo articles this past week and he mentioned that during the weeks when the students are out, they invite alumni members of the Izzone to attend as Alumni Reunions. Sounds like it's been a pretty successful venture.

Do we do dynamic pricing for the holiday break games? We need to, if not.
