USC beat Washington.
I was an Illiniboard inhabitant (still remember Brumby and crew fondly) back when Self coached our team. It could be my old age acting up on me, but I don't remember this perception of Bill Self at all.

For whatever it's worth (and we could each define 'limited' in different ways), I think @BoiseBaller is mostly correct in his Self perception.
You hired Self 90% for his recruiting. Not saying his coaching was Zook-ian, but he was known much more for his connections and ability to bring people in.
Ummm.. We lost one home game during Self's 3 years here. One.
I was certainly aware of what we had.
He also inherited a much better program..
Agree on the Brad part. I don't remember Self being viewed this way however....he was viewed as a great recruiter, and I always thought his in game coaching was pretty well regarded as well
I’m sure this has been mentioned already but it seems that our price point for tickets has exacerbated this. If you look at similar games at MSU and Purdue, there’s a significant price discrepancy and it’s unfortunate. Illinois is a top university attended by many upper-middle class students, but located in a town surrounded by farm communities filled with die hard fans that have cannot afford to fill up the sections to create an intimidating atmosphere. Adding on to that, the students attending Illinois grew up while the school was a bubble team at best. It might take a few years for that effect to pass over.
Yes, Miami (Oh) and Winthrop were pretty bad, as was North Florida in the first game of the season in 2015... though that was in Springfield. I don't believe any of these were massive upsets according to metrics. But certainly from an optics standpoint they were.
We've had our fair share of clunkers. Rarely have they considerably altered or defined a season. Occasionally, though, I do think they've been the bellwether of things to come.
I would argue at times they guard them quite well. Other times, like the USC game-not so much.

But I can see where an 11:00am home game might not be ideal even if these guys are far more serious about things than my teammates and I were. There are a lot more distractions at home.

There is a cause. KJ said (in the interview after USC game) it's a tendon inflammation. And that he will definitely play in the next game. I tried posting a translated interview, but mods deleted it / didn't approve.Feeling good? What does that mean? There has to be a cause. It's all so strange
Brad has made the program nationally relevant and fun to watch again(for the most part). And it's definitely way better than the Weber(post Self recruits) and Groce era.
I think Brad will likely be the coach here until he retires or the wheels fall off a bit but I feel like he's kinda in the weird spot where it's difficult to hire a coach that would be an improvement but I have have very little confidence that he will ever get the program over the hump and win a championship.
While I think it will be frustrating at times but I'd take consistent good and fun seasons with tournament appearances as a floor over whatever it was the Groce and Weber did.

It was a video interview in Lithuanian language that a couple of Lithuanian basketball journalists took from KJ right after USC game. It's a pity I spent 1 hour transcribing and translating it only for the mods to not approve it. But yeah, KJ should be good to go for the next game.

I read an Izzo articles this past week and he mentioned that during the weeks when the students are out, they invite alumni members of the Izzone to attend as Alumni Reunions. Sounds like it's been a pretty successful venture.
