What’s overlooked is the youth of this team, star or otherwise, all navigating a B1G season for the first time and dealing with injury and reffing discontinuities to the lineup.

At the beginning of the year, many of us felt year 2 would be it.

I would say that most, including Brad, do better with older teams.

History shows this so we aren’t unique in our struggles.
D6, I truly respect your posts, and search them out. My problem with this year is that the team seems to be regressing as the year goes on. I also think that coaching mistakes have contributed to some of the losses.

Thanks. I don’t disagree regarding Brad. I’d rather blame him than Hamer or Tyler

JMO - we showed great upside and people jumped to conclusion we should be a top 10 team.

Reality
-KJ has great games and so so games. Still turns the ball over too much.
-Tomas is good shooter nice post moves and rebounds his size 7'1", Good center but not dominant like Kofi.
-Kylan is a warrior on defense and rebounding, good ball handler but lacks quickness and not really a true pg (same role at AZ). Somehow he lost his 3 point shot this season. We still rated him on HS 4 stars but he is what he is in college.
- Ben has size and can shoot but is weaker defensively. About what we expected.
- Will is improving rapidly but needs more strength
- Morez was killing it prior to injury. Everything we hoped for in rebounding, defense and energy. Lot of upside.
- DGL playing well. Great energy and can create shot. Hopefully will get more playing time with injuries.
- Jake great hustle and nice shot. Probably projects as a 2g due to size.
- Tre was good contributor. No idea what happened beyond flu. Hopefully with Morez down he can step up

We should make big dance but unless Will becomes a 25 ppg scorer I am not optimistic past that.

Great challenge to see what Brad can do with this group.

23 pts per game with zero game planning. TSJ was to last years offense as MJ was to the Triangle offense.

Then there was The Athletic article that credits Jay Wright with Illinois adoption of Domask booty ball. The article is complementary of Tyler and Brad's abilities. Brad's change in recruiting focus to positional size. And Brad and Tyler moving away from an NBA type offense mid season and adaption of Jay's Villanova teams offensive concepts.

I think that’s all accurate…But
In Tyler & Brad’s defense though a little…Tyler was charged with the devising of an efficient offense last year AND He definitely accomplished that. Did he just get lucky as hell?…quite possibly. It was about as simplistic as it gets; and freelance as hell.
A lot of simple transition pistol screens right into booty ball…(as this video shows) that’s about it. Brad said over and over…we really don’t run much. He wasn’t lying…
But it was effective. Maybe something more structured/complex might not of fit that team as well. I dunno? The goal was to devise something efficient that suited our talent and we accomplished that. I would argue a little bit of simplicity is
a generally good thing. Calipari’s one and done, Dribble-Drive stuff was about as simplistic as hell…but it suited his personal. No one was calling him an Xs and Os zen-daddy…even that…that I remember.
Another example completely different: Satan’s modified flex with that high back screen…pretty simple too…basic flex structure, good spacing and some intuitive wrinkles/easy specials out of it…it doesn’t need to be complex to be efficient…is all I’m saying. And there saying it’s one of the most efficient offenses ever?
Then a lot of other teams seem to run their more intricate sets at the beginning…and then do little more than basic ball screen stuff for the lion share of the game.
I feel like that Mayer team and this year’s team probably needs a little more structures and complexity IMO. But that’s prolly pretty hard to accomplish with these teams you barely have before they’re gone.

Is this the year underwood gets the b1g coach of the year?

Why do I have this feeling that BU will part ways with the Illini after the season. Talk me out of feeling that way Ville.

Brad’s agent has been communicating with other programs already … And not just one or two programs either …

Now is this Brad telling him to do so ?? Idk … Because he does this every year …

But some of these programs that I know they’re talking to are not an “upgrade” …

Hypothetical scenario:
Brad gets offered a job somewhere else that is a lateral move (No UNC or KU).

1. Assuming the money and fit is right does Brad take it?
2. If Brad tells JW he’s considering the another job how hard/not hard does JW try to keep him?

Depends on the job … But it’s not a big secret that Brad’s agent throws his name in the hat for jobs …

I do not think Josh would make some crazy offer to retain Brad at this point … Anywhere Brad goes would likely be a downgrade … He would thank him for what he’s done, wish him well and immediately start the search … He’s a top 10 paid coach with top 10 NIL, top 10 fanbase, and a top 10 facility … If he ain’t happy here then that’s on Brad is likely the thought Josh would have …

1. Would be dumb to leave
2. Would be dumb to want him to leave
