I was one who blamed a lot on health of the team. After last night we saw that mid major players can't compete with the good teams, especially when we have an offense that has no movement and the defensive scheme is terrible. I have been an Underwood supporter but he has to find different offensive and defensive coaches. I have watched the Illini for 58 years and that was one of the worst games ever.

This is not the reason others give for Chester leaving.
Exactly Chester left because of the way Brad treated his recruits like Epps . If Brad does well in recruiting and players like him why did Sincere and Hansberry leave with Chester instead of staying at Illinois. That should tell you all you need to know about Brad and who is really doing the recruiting

January 2nd feels so long ago. The talk from many were final 4 aspirations.

Tonight: Can we even win another game?

I don't care about how sick and injured the team has been, tonight's effort and execution shows this coaching staff is not up to snuff. 2-26 from behind 3 point line. That is pee-wee level stats, and it is a recurring theme. The players have failed, and the coaching has failed to adjust with the roster construction (also a coaching fail).

I know shooting is contagious, but at some point, the coaches need to accept that this team can't hit 3's. Brad's stubbornness this year is going to drive his seat warm. Two marquis Saturday night games in a row where the team collapsed in every way.

No way to sugar coat it: this season is becoming an utter failure, even if the team wins one more to make the tourney.
Late to the discussion again (can't stand the pain to jump in), but couple of things. Pretty ridiculous to rip Ben when, as Second pointed out, we lost by 40. Also, though I wouldn't mind if we never shot another 3 pointer this season, the truth of the matter is, we are almost totally inept in attacking the basket. Look at how hard we have to work to get anything moving to the basket. One would think we don't have coaches who can devise an offensive game plan to accomplish this!

I still think the assistant coaching thing is way overrated. Have you looked at Duke’s staff? It’s Scheyer, and then basically 2 recruiters (Jai Lucas, Emanuel Dildy), 1 long time alum (Chris Carrawell) and another basic sympathy hire in (Will Avery - who had 0 experience coaching till Scheyer hired him).

Yet Duke looks very well coached bc the Head Coach is doing the coaching.

It lets Brad completely off the hook by claiming the assistants are why we look poorly coached. It’s the head coach’s job to coach.
In my option, this post hits the nail on the head.

He is bat crap crazy with stats what happened to getting in a young man's backside. Quit listening to your son, fire him. Let's move on. We have money, tradition, and fan base.

The Problem is BRAD not his assistant. Brad has no coaching philosophy or no system. Weber had a system, Matt Painter has a system, Izzo has a system, Greg Gard has a system, Chris Collins has a system, Dan Hurley has a system, Tony Bennet has a system, Chris Beard has a system, Rick Barnes has a system, Shaka Smart has a system, Bruce Pearl has a system , Rick Barnes has a system, Jay Wright has a system, Dana Altman has a system, Greg McDermott has a system , Dusty May has a system

It's called playing possum. We have Duke right where we want them. When we play them in the tournament, they will be so over-confident, they won't even bother to prepare for us. We'll blitz them in the first five minutes and win going away.

Just hope we didn't make this plan too obvious by letting them win by that much.

They're good points. The problem here is that defenses are going to collapse.

Here's another major issue. We're not getting stops and turnovers anymore. Those lead to run-outs, breaks and easy offense. That's just disappeared and our defensive metrics gave dropped like a brick. We don't get easy buckets. That's an enormous part of our game. Tough to do that when you're not digging in. .

Like you, this is JMO.
Agree. We have lost the "spurtability". Early this season, everyone was talking about how quickly/often we could go on a 10-0 or 14-0 "spurt" in a couple minutes. That is gone. When you can't get stops/kills and can't shoot that makes for some ugly BB.

The most confusing thing about this whole season is all of these guys came in being able to shoot (except maybe Tre). It absolutely blows my mind that an entire group of players just forgets how to shoot the ball. They've collectively lost confidence and everyone seems more focused on just shooting the shot and not concentrating on MAKING the shot.

Edit: the team also shot 60% on 2s and got good looks from basically everywhere all night against a really tough Duke team. Outside of an absolutely dumbfounding inability to shoot the ball the offense is way less a problem than the defense.
Boswell’s stats at AZ v Ill
2 years ago season total: 30-77 for 39%
this year so far: 24-108 for 22%
he made 6 more 3’s two years while taking 31 less shots than so far this year.

last year totals: 66-174 for 38%
this year so far: 24-108 for 22%
he needs to shoot 63.6% for the next 66 shots to match last year.

Ben
so far this year he has made the same number he made last year but needed 30 more attempts to accomplish it
this year so far 53-158 for 33.5%
last year 53-128 for 41% from 3

You think Jai is going to Miami because Jon is doing the coaching? His staff is doing the coaching he is the maestro conducting the show and is damn good at it.. He learned from the best and I am not a Coach K fan. You hire competent assistants to teach and run the segments of the game and it is your job to see that they do their jobs and then you orchestrate. Brad honestly has one coach that is on the same playing field level in Orlando and Brad honestly IMHO lacks Jon's savvy of the game.

Why is he a garbage person? Whatever he was accused of at Texas was dropped. He was also a guest at TSJ’s draft night party. He’s a phenomenal coach and will be excellent anywhere he goes. Hopefully it’s not Indiana.

The promoter of UFC never even got suspended for on camera getting physical with his wife after she attacked him.

You’re not in position to call anyone a garbage person based on accusations. Hopefully the TSJ situation taught you that.

Bingo …

When we were 12-3, was is Brad and Brad alone that was the reason for it? Was the Big Ten ChampionshipSSS based on Brad and Brad alone that got us there? Was it Brad and Brad alone that got us to the elite 8 last year?

If the answer is no to ANY of the questions, drop the narrative. You can't pick and choose the reasoning behind winning and losing.

His the honest truth. This roster is good, not great and they're young, not experienced. Leave it at that.

Tomi was consistently redirecting or blocking shots in the paint. However, every single time he would do that, there were 2 or 3 Duke players there to grab the ball while our guys were who knows where. Tomi can't alter the shot then bounce like a pogo stick to get the rebound. He needs some help, and he had none of it last night.

People can complain about illness and injury, but this was by design. Morez would have helped, but he was not playing much until his play was so good he forced himself into minutes. But this team was designed to shoot 3s. Our PF is one of our worst rebounders. So when we face a strong interior presence, we're in big trouble, especially without Morez.

But it wasn't just Morez that was rebounding. The two things I've noticed that have dropped off on defense has been help/rotations and rebounding from the guards. Both of those take a lot of effort and right now there is a lot more standing around than there was earlier in the year. Combine that with the even worse shooting recently and it adds to my theory that the conditioning just isn't there after everyone got sick. Maybe it's a foolish belief but I'm hoping that the slower pace of games over the next couple weeks will let them get their legs back before the tourney.

Edit: conditioning would also help explain the even worse second halves.

You're so high on the talent on this team and it's Brad's fault for not coaching then up.....where did the talent come from? I'm not seeing West Virginia having a decent year. You?

If Illinois were to fire Underwood without cause, the school would owe him about $30.6 million, subject to Underwood having a duty to find another job and Illinois being entitled to offset its payment to Underwood based on his income from the new position. At present, Illinois’ buyout payments to Underwood would be made in monthly installments through the end of the scheduled contract term, which is now April 30, 2030.

If he leaves on his own for a job he owes 15MM and double if a big ten team or something like that

From what I’ve been told … Brad’s representation has been made aware we would be willing to negotiate the buyout if he were to leave for another program …

This pretty much describes every competent leader, you surround yourself with knowledgeable individuals willing and able to implement your vision and ideas. As a leader you must know your deficiencies and then be willing to hire someone that can complement you.

Wow are people seriously calling for BU to be fired after everything he’s done for our program? It’s one season. You’re allowed to have a “hiccup” season after losing most of your roster. And if our hiccup season still includes a tournament berth, that’s pretty good. If he continues to underperform season after season that’s a different story.

The talent came from OA relationships with Will Riley and Tomi. Without OA Illinois doesn’t have Tomi or Will Riley. TA recruiting and relationship with Morez, They stumbled upon KJ when they were Recruiting Egor Demin. Chester, OA, TA , Chin Coleman and Alexander are the reasons for recruits and transfer portal not BRAD. Brad even admitted he didn’t want Domask when the rest of his staff did. Brad has absolutely no idea what he’s doing and mark my words he will eventually be fired in the next couple of seasons or leave for another Job. Brad has been at Illinois for 8 seasons.

Yeah let's not put your words in my post friend. What you suggest of course is silly.

Perhaps he might have said: "I recognize that as a team we are not putting all the elements together to find wins. Myself and my coaches will have to work harder to scheme in a way that exploits the weaknesses of the current team we face and find new ways to favor the strengths of our squad to find success."

Something like that rather than "it's just one game" that's a bit insulting and assumes no one has been paying attention.
As a high major coach, part of the job is public relations. Game after game now, BU attacks a reporter for a question. The one this time that bothered me was him snarling about not comparing (Booth) in the shoot around to play in the game. Then, he turned right around and said that the players make the shots in practice. Bill Self has a pretty good reputation and record, and I see a contrast between his recent postgame interview after being embarrassed by BYU. Although he made some of the same points as Brad did last night, he wasn't rude or bitter toward the reporters. Like it or not, the fans are a part of the support that a team needs. I also feel a bit bad for Hamer. and Tyler, as I am sure they are getting a lot of flack in public and message boards. They were thrown into an untenable position by being put in charge of the O and D. Key points from the post game presser

1. Cooper Flagg is great. Other teams are great.

2. We shot 2-26 from 3. Nobody wins shooting that poorly.

3. We depend on the shooting. The poor shooting affects other parts of our game.

What happened to always playing good defense even when shots don’t fall? What happened to we’re going to be tougher than the other team? The media guys asked leading questions for those responses.

That presser was soft with an “oh well” vibe. It left little confidence that things will improve.
Plenty of teams lose on bad shooting nights. Not many lose by FORTY - FLIPPIN - THREE.

It’s the way we've lost the last two that has me more concerned than anything else. If we lose to Iowa, and concerns of being on the bubble become very real.

I second the Tyler / Hammer comments when together they earn less then .5% of our total coaching salary pool. If they are in over their heads, it’s not their fault and they are certainly not getting paid enough for the grief they are getting.
