Agreed that Brad is better than most alternatives. Just wish he would fill ACs to complement his strength as a "CEO coach" better.

Don't know what happened with Chester and TA but I see that AC turnover in offseason as "coming home to roost" a bit.
Yeah completely agree.

Remember watching games last year with my dad where we both thought it was weird that Tyler seemed to be the main assistant in Brads ear and constantly sitting right next to him.

Then it's continued this year with Brad appearing to lean more on Tyler than experienced coach like Antigua or even Geoff.

Now, winning has a habit of curing all of that kind of stuff but I can't imagine that these coaches that have spent decades playing or working their way up the ranks would necessarily be thrilled to taking a backseat to two coaches with basically no experience and one of them is the head coaches kid.

Like Chester was a two time member of the Big ten all defensive team, played professionally overseas, and then had spent nearly 15 years coaching as a GA and then asst at K-State and Virginia before coming to Illinois. Yet he's taking a backseat to Hamer on defensive gameplanning and scheme.

The funny part about Podz leaving is he made it to the NBA just mercilessly jacking 3s at Santa Clara. Let that sink in a moment.
Not even close to being true. Rebounding, steals, defense, driving, slashing, lots of 2 point shots. He wouldn't been conference MVP just shooting 3s. Look at his Santa Clara stats!

The other thing everyone has wrong. He went to Santa Clara because he wanted to. He didn't want to go to a high major. He had enough of being passed over, he wanted to play. He didn't want to go fight for playing time, he wanted to be on the court and featured. Listen to what he himself says, not to the detractors and Underwood apologists. He's in the NBA, not any of them.

Is BU a better coach than John Groce though? Brad for sure is a better recruiter but with the exact same talent, does the team perform worse under Groce? I'm not sure.

I didn't say anything about recruiting. Hard to imagine anyone could have watched the team this year and think BU is better at player development, game prep and game day management than Groce.
Double accounts? 🤔

Generational talent is one of the most over used phrases in sports. Also up there is “instant classic.” I think it is a byproduct of all these sports talk shows and social media. Things just can’t just be good or great. Nope, have to be generational or classic or future Hall of Famer (after one season).

Hot take is another phrase way over used. Couple weeks ago I was in the car listening to Cleveland sports radio. They were discussing Travis Hunter and whether he would play both ways. One of the hosts said something like, “my hot take is I hope he does cuz I think it would be cool.” That is not a hot take nor is it in any way insightful.
Let's not forget "epic" as another overused superlative

The statement the original poster made had nothing to do with who did more for the program. Brad is for sure a better recruiter and hence has better results. The original poster made a comment strictly talking about coaching. Is Brad a much better coach than Groce? I'm not sure he is strictly speaking about X's and O's.

I mean, I have issues with Brad, but he's in a different tier than John Groce. I guess most people don't remember spending most February's thinking "if we go 5-1 to finish the season and get hot in the B1G tournament, we might sneak in".

A bad season with Brad is making the tournament, just barely. That should be our floor. I don't know if Brad has the ceiling we want yet, but he's better than John Groce.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

There are a lot of 1 and done's every year. Generational means once a generation. i.e. Something you see about every 20 years. If someone isn't in the discussion for GOAT, they are probably not a generational player.
I'm aware. I was using it in the same sense of the poster to which I was responding. Kofi wasn't even the best big in the B1G since Edey kept eating his lunch, so he wasn't really generational. Ayo was great. I love the guy. But he wasnt generation.

Honestly, Illinois hasn't had a generational player in my lifetime. Some really great ones, yes. Not generational.

Just for fun

Jay Wright made his first Final Four in year 8 at Villanova
Tony Bennett made his first Final Four in year 10 at Virginia
Bo Ryan made his first Final Four in year 13 at Wisconsin
Scott Drew made his first Final Four in year 18 at Baylor
Matt Painter made his first Final Four in year 19 at Purdue
So WHAT are we supposed to do give Underwood 10 ,13 , 18 or 19 Years and hope he wins a National Championship or makes a final 4 at Illinois. THIS IS THE NIL ERA Some of the Brad Underwood cult members are Brad Underwood fans and Not THE University of Illinois fans. My goodness. All those coaches Jay Wright, Tony Bennett, Scott Drew were before NIL and none of Them made the money Underwood is making now . Matt Painter had 5 Sweet Sixteens and 1 Elite 8 before his final 4 run last season. Painter is also a Purdue alum and former Purdue Basketball player.

Not playing Podz at all during his one year here at Illinois (2021-2022) and one year later at Santa Clara )(2022-2023) he's a first round NBA player really seemed to me to be strange. Did Podz rapidly improve? Did Underwood not know he had a really good player in Podz? Would Podz have been as good as Kaspar if he played 25 minutes a game at Illinois? I guess we will never know.

Any reason we didn't have a replacement lined up?
I’m sure it was mentioned before, but I must have missed it….why did TA end up leaving? And if it was know he was leaving well before he actually left…what was the reason for that?

No actual knowledge myself, but what I was told was he was salty about OA getting a bigger bag.
