No worries. Get to it when you can.
Got a chance to look at this, and I took a LONG time to look at it. Admittedly, I've heard a lot of chatter/analysis about this, so I'm not sure how biased my comments will be (full disclosure - not a fan of either team).
Live action, I can understand why Madley gave the penalty. Not saying it's the right call, just saying that at that speed I can understand why the penalty was given.
I'm normally of the opinion that if you have given a penalty that you generally don't overturn via VAR unless there is virtually no contact. However, in my opinion, I would make an exception here FOR THE HOLD (I'll explain why I emphasized in a minute). There is no way that shirt pull had any impact on the play, and the reaction was WAY overblown for that level of hold. Unfortunately, this happens in soccer. But VAR was there to do a correct overturn, in my opinion. I don't see this as re-refereeing.
At first glance, I thought Maguire might have also made contact with the lower body. This was particularly interesting to me, as I assessed a referee on a game two weekends ago and we had a very similar type of play where he also gave a penalty and I did not think it was a penalty either in live action or by watching the replay later. But there was no contact. So in my personal opinion, I think VAR correctly found a clear and obvious error. However, that is going against the general consensus among my officiating colleagues that there wasn't enough video evidence to overturn the call.
To note the possible offside, there was a player in an offside position. However, that player (although it was close) was not actively involved in the play. The three MU players involved in the play are not reacting to that player. Had the ball gone to 14 Blue, OR any of the three players had reacted to him being there, then you would have had an offside. That's a really hard play to identify, even for elite professional assistant referees. But, I don't think there would have been an offside offense had the penalty "stood" and then they looked at a potential offside. But that's just my opinion - with English VAR, who knows what would have eventually transpired?
I'm sorry I gave an "Ed Hochuli" explanation here. I'm trying to account for all aspects of the play and at least provide both sides of the situation before giving my final opinion.
