Fair point. My biggest concern with Leipold was his recruiting ceiling was/is lower. You are locking in a pure development approach, though he's very good at it. Bret's reputation at Wisconsin as all development has been overblown. He recruited better than people realize.
Plus he saw and capitalized on bringing in a grad transfer QB in Russel Wilson when things like that were far more rare.

It's possible that Illinois only plays one ranked team all year. I'd assume Indiana is ranked if they start the season ranked because their schedule is easy before they play Illinois.

Huh, doesn't tOSU comes here in October

They're the certainty. If Indiana doesn't start ranked, and with them playing three bad teams to start the year, they might not be ranked when they play Illinois.

my recollection is that there were more people expressing anger or dismay at selecting Bret than praising him.
And iirc, it was 95% related to his earlier perceived persona of being part of the "football coach partying fraternity" than anything else.
No one really disputed his coaching chops
That's where I was; I believed what I read on the internet and thought he was a frat boy. I also thought he was insane to go to Arkansas, but now I'm glad he did.

Bret has been a home run hire, as I think everyone now knows. Part of what he is able to do is because of the resources Josh is providing, but Bret has a plan for everything, and knows how to manage his leaders within the team and program.

Increasingly, I'm getting the sense that visiting other schools is starting to work to our advantage, because we leave a positive impression. The more kids can compare side by side, the better we're starting to look. That's very impressive!

I was advocating for Leipold because he had won at unconventional places that had lacked historical success, something that crossed over with Illinois' past 30 years. I thought Bielema was antithetical to that need - he won at a place that had been set up for success for him (Wisconsin) and lost at a place that has similar disadvantages as Illinois (Arkansas). I still like my thought process, and Leipold has been a great hire for Kansas, but the fit between Bielema and Illinois has been incredible.
People made too much of BB's last year at Arkansas. He inherited a dumpster fire and turned it around by year 2.
