That reminds me of an Illinois music prof I used to go hear play in a jazz combo at the old Nature's Table on Goodwin in the '80s. He ultimately departed for the Eastman Conservatory in Rochester. I saw his farewell solo piano concert in Krannert in 1990. Before the concert he said a few words, one of which was how he recalled being a junior prof on campus in the early '70s and giving piano lessons on the side to local kids. He basically said that he wanted to apologize to all of the ones he taught for approximately the first ten years he was doing it, because he was fumbling his way toward minimal competence.
