I've heard don't rule out UCLA making a move ... They seem to think they can land a big fish ...

General Carousel Update ...

NC State is clearly focused on Will Wade ... They would like to get a deal done before any of these other jobs open ...

Villanova ... Hearing Chris Collins & Richard Pitino ... No one else besides those two ...

IU ... McCollum is all I have heard lately ... Brownell is still a name but that has gotten quieter over the last 24-48 hours ...

Iowa list is DeVries, McCollum ... If Iowa can give DeVries the resources he is looking for, he will be the next HC ...

I am hearing K State could make a move ... I am hearing Texas is planning to make a move regardless of what happens or the run Terry might go on ...

Another one that I hear could be a surprising opening is UCLA ...
Odds that could impact us?

I think complaining about Underwood after the success he has had, is a luxury. The name of the game is to keep taking cracks at a run until we hit one. Brad has been excellent at getting us to the opportunity, despite the massive changes in how rosters are built, during his tenure. Sure, he hasn't won the big one, yet. Know what he has done? Proven he can adapt. That might be the biggest skill requirement right now, because it has kept us steadily competitive during his time.

Yes, the split personality blowouts are not ideal. But half of them are going our way, which tells you something is going right.

Loyalty. It's more than letters in the address bar.
Split personality blowouts are always more likely with first year player teams. Taking the upper cuts and responding in the same game is part of the maturing process that can take years. Again, BU will be the Illinois coach as long as he wants to be the Illinois coach and he has earned that right for the foreseeable future.

You mean where it says “Illinoisloyalty.com” rather than “bradunderwoodloyalty”?
I’m pretty sure you can have respect and gratitude without blind loyalty. The situation is a little more nuanced than that.

Whitman gave Brad everything he could have dreamed of…at a time when OSU lowballed him… He was looking when he found this job…and apparently he’s still looking. Okay…fine…whatever…capitali$m…(we’ve all heard the lecture before.) But that’s also why it’s prudent planning to have a plan B & C…$$
Also, I’ve got Brad’s resume memorized at this point; and I’m well aware of all that he has done for us.

But don’t tell me I have to give every ounce of my loyalty to a guy (who may or may not wanna be here himself)
I think it says a lot about how much a bubble we're in around here if we're ready to move on from Brad when his "ceiling" is:
• Program’s first NCAA Elite Eight appearance since advancing to 2005 national title game
• Big Ten’s winningest team in league play over last five seasons (69-31, .690)
• 69 B1G wins from 2019-20 through 2023-24 are most in school history over five-year stretch
• Four straight NCAA Tournament appearances (fifth precluded by COVID-19 cancelation in 2020)
• NCAA Tournament wins in three of the last four years
• One of only five schools nationally with five straight 20-win regular seasons
• Three Big Ten Championships in last four years
• Five straight top-five B1G finishes, including top-two finishes three of the last four years
• 2024 B1G Tournament Champions
• 2022 B1G Champions
• 2021 B1G Tournament Champions
• Led B1G in wins in 2021
• 2021 NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed (fourth in school history)

Is there any fanbase that wouldn't be ecstatic if their new coach accomplished all those recent Underwood "ceilings"? This chatter that pops up after every loss reminds me Indiana fans and their the delusions of grandeur.
The same fans that believe BU has the program underperforming are the same ones who make fun of Indiana fans talking about their national championships 40 years ago. The irony.

These are the golden years of Illinois basketball. I hear a lot of they expect Illinois to be in the sweet 16 every year... If you just look at the last 10 seasons in a row, I don't believe a single program has accomplished this.

In this thread alone you will see many Illinois fans with the same issue, yet Illinois have never won a NC and has been ever mentioned as a blue bood.

Heard it suggested today to get Fran to replace Tyler and be the offensive coach and our old HC Bruce to replace Hamer and coach the defense. I would be happy with that myself

Because this is the internet I’m gonna pick on the one thing I don’t agree with rather than everything else (which you nailed by the way).

From 2000-2006 our tourney seeding was 4-1-4-4-5-1-4. But maybe those were the platinum years and these are the golden years and you were 100% correct. Either way we aren’t that far off.

Agree with your observations/additions. Nothing is a given, but I feel BU is much more capable of maintaining and building on the current "golden" years than Weber was able to build on the "Platinum" years. I do not mean this to be a knock on Weber, I'm thankful for his years.

You left out that he's one of the top ten highest paid coaches in the country: top 10. You also left out that he has some of the best facilities to use to recruit players and assistant coaches to our program and to get his teams ready to play championship level basketball.

Not every Tom, Dick, and Harry of a basketball program offers all of these things to its coach. In return for this creme de la creme of a situation the U of I has given Brad, SOME of our fanbase, including me, expect at least a top sixteen performance yearly and yearly contention for conference titles. While it seems that many here believe that Brad is put-upon for receiving these sorts of expectations from fans like me, others of us believe that this is a reasonable return to expect for the investment our university and alumni have made in our basketball program.

Nobody expects a sweet sixteen every year. But I think most fans want a national championship before college basketball as we know it no longer exists - however long/short that may be. It's the one thing this program has not achieved in the modern era. It is the stated goal of both JW and BU and the expectations they themselves have set, and I'm overjoyed that they have. Hopefully we beat all odds and get one next month. But each year we fall short of that makes it that much more unlikely. I hope BU can get us there, but I trust JW will put the right person in the position to do it.

Yes, BU has elevated us as a consistently successful, respected program and I think everyone appreciates how difficult that was and is thankful for it. He is a wonderful representative of the university and publicly supports his players. But it is time for the program to take that next step and get over the hump. We haven't been close in 20 years despite having some of the best players to ever play for the program. It's time.

That is what you are hearing I believe.

Illinois is also not a brand name in college bball like Duke, Kansas, KY, Mich St., etc. Sometime, no matter the facilities, etc. some kids will never come to Illinois because of that. Why do you care what BU makes $? It is not coming out of your pocket. If you are investing in 18-year-old kids and the randomness of every bounce of the ball, I'm guessing investments might not be your thing.

Trust me, I have been waiting 45 plus years for a NC and want that as much as anyone here. No coach that you hire can guarantee that you will get a NC. BU has given Illinois what you want, getting to the tourney every year to give it a shot.

Not sure where you see a correlation to each year you don't win the NC means your odds go down the next year.

I'm not confident the game survives long term in its current form. Agree, there is no guarantee with any coach.

Jeepers…where to begin?

Who makes fun of Indiana fans? Well, hopefully most of us. We are supposedly Illinois fans…that’s kind of what we do here, no? I have no real ill will towards them of course. But yeah, I think from my orange and blue vantage point they come off a little delusional. Guilty as charged.

But why are you conflating that with this other narrative that you’re desperately trying to create?

I have no idea why this post of mine…makes you think I expected a Sw16 every single year? I think it should be the goal; sure. But of course it isn’t always gonna happen. I never even said he has the program underperforming. Where are you getting that? You’re manufacturing that.

But apparently if people aren't sufficiently all Rah, rah rah-enough about Brad, every waking second…you feel the need to get all sanctimonious.

Why would he go? I sure hope that doesn't happen. While I trust Whitman's ability to hire a replacement, there are no guarantees in this business and the odds of replacing the winningest head coach in the conference over the last 5-6 years with someone better are pretty slim.
Look at the absolute hell Indiana has been in. Our down period in the late Weber and Groce era is almost nothing compared to a lot of what they’ve gone through and they’ve always been seen as a premier destination for a coach.
