He will be applying and I would think he will get itHe could potentially apply for a medical redshirt for this season as he got injured 8 games in and missed the rest of the season.
How many times does one of us have to say they are going to hire a different defensive assistant? If we stick with Tyler's buddy and what John Beilien referred to as the worst defense he's ever seen a Brad Underwood team have....when a donor if willing to pony up for Luke Yaklich....
I'll be officially waving the Chris Beard flag.
I hope DD gets many iowa portals. It is not like they were winning for their coachIf WVU was still in the tournament and Drake lost first, would DD still be the Indiana coach?
Now that DD is the coach, I bet he raids the Iowa transfers. I am curious what WVU/Illini will follow him to Indiana. I would think Luke Goode stays if he can get another year.
See: Illinois Basketball............2011 to 2017.If we don’t get rid of Hammer, I think Josh needs to have a serious discussion with Underwood and the direction of the program
If I'm NW I'd take a harder look at the current Loyola coach than the previous one.I wonder if he can get Northwestern if Collins leaves for Nova.
Would actually be a good hire for Northwestern imo if he can get out of Oklahoma.
Bad comparison. Apples to Oranges. Illinois in 2011 to 2017 didn’t invest $15M in NIL and coaches salaries. Expectations are different now. Valid comparison are programs that are paying coaches $5M per year and more.See: Illinois Basketball............2011 to 2017.
What's wrong with the direction of the program? He replaced 11 guys(???), had a massive recruiting class made up of young kids, he won 20 games with and injured and sick roster and we're a 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament. If we don’t get rid of Hammer, I think Josh needs to have a serious discussion with Underwood and the direction of the program
It's amazing that Groce's history at Illinois is changing before our very eyes. Not sure a great X's O's coach has a record like this:Here's an excerpt from an article I found online:
"He’s proven to be a subpar X’s and O’s coach. His in-game adjustments almost never work out. I can’t even keep track of the number of times I’ve seen him call a timeout when the game was getting away from Illinois and the team actually performed worse after the timeout.
There’s a specific play that’s burned into my memory from last season that is really indicative of the whole Underwood era for me. It was against Wisconsin at home, and the Illini were down by ten points as the game was starting to slip away from them. Underwood called a full timeout to try and stop the Badgers’ run. After a two minute break to draw up a set play, the Illini came out of the huddle and inbounded the ball. What happens next may or may not surprise you.
Turnover. Out of a timeout. I couldn’t believe it. The camera had barely switched back to the action on the court and the play that Underwood had just drawn up went to hell in two seconds."
Sounds like something we've seen posted on this board hundreds of times right? Well, here's the twist - see the word Underwood in orange in that excerpt? That wasn't in the original text. Replace it with "Groce" and you get the excerpt in its original form from January 2017
It's interesting how the mythologies around ex-coaches changes depending on the current coach. Because BU is a great recruiter and almost all criticisms of him have to do with x's and o's, the mythology around Groce becomes that he was a strong x's and o's coach that couldn't recruit. If BU was an x's and o's genius who had trouble recruiting, I am certain we'd remember Groce as a good recruiter and terrible x's and o's guy.

It’s time for Illini Basketball to make a coaching change
John Groce is likeable, but time has essentially run out for him in Champaign.www.thechampaignroom.com

What are the other options? come back to Illinois and coach Defense? ... probably not, but figured I would askChester is going to get an interview to be the HC at WVU … Wren has respect for him …
I do not expect him to end up on staff at Indiana at this point … He’d like to get the WVU job and if not that, he’s got other options on the table as well …
Sounds like Weber overachieved if that is the caseI think he meant that the AD (Thomas) gave him non-competitive resources relative to the rest of the Big Ten.
It is not like Groce was competing against teams who did invest 15M in NIL. The coach salary landscape has changed a lot since 2011-2017. BU is the 14th highest paid coach and I think that is fair.Bad comparison. Apples to Oranges. Illinois in 2011 to 2017 didn’t invest $15M in NIL and coaches salaries. Expectations are different now. Well, Villanova is Catholic and not (Mainline) Protestant, so all good!He doesn't seem like a Main Line guy.
I like Valentine for Loyola but I don't think he's done anything to suggest he deserves a bigger job. His best team was the one he inherited from Moser and he hasn't made the tournament since. I would rather look at guys like Huss or Richey at that point. If I'm NW I'd take a harder look at the current Loyola coach than the previous one.
When Whitman is evaluating Underwood absolutely no aspect of it is comparing Underwood to Groce’s performance 10 years ago. Whitman is comparing Underwood to similar programs making similar basketball investments which are basically the top 15 programs in the country. It is not like Groce was competing against teams who did invest 15M in NIL. That's some d*mn fine Sh*tposting there.

Do those programs have the name of a coach who never made a championship game adorn their floor? When Whitman is evaluating Underwood absolutely no aspect of it is comparing Underwood to Groce’s performance 10 years ago. I don’t understand your point but yes. For instance, Purdue would be a comparable for Illinois and they play on Keady court and Keady never even made a Final Four.Do those programs have the name of a coach who never made a championship game adorn their floor?
I see where you’re coming from, but IMO taking this approach (year after year) introduces legitimate risk of falling behind the pack of upper-tier programs. What if Josh doesn't mind having an assistant coach or two who will never demand a raise because they have no leverage? Could it be he only views three of the assistant coach slots as necessary and the other two are seat-fillers?
Keep in mind it wasn't that long ago that there was a three-assistant-coach limit, Tyler and Hamer were only promoted to AC because the limit expanded to five.
Its also fairly similar resume to Underwood only Brad jumped around more and his first head coaching job was at a smaller school.Devries certainly has a great resume but it looks like Bruce Weber to me. 20 year assistant. Success in the Valley. Then a power 5 job. I’m honestly surprised Indiana couldn’t get a coach with a FF on their resume like Beard/Stevens/Wright. But Kentucky couldn’t either. Neither could Louisville. The blue bloods of college basketball appear a thing of the past
I’m interested to see if Frazier/Hansberry/Harris all follow him to IU
