Coaching Carousel (Basketball)

Honestly it was awful basketball to see players get rewarded for sliding under a player in the air.
I agree, but I also don't think airborne charges made up as many of the charge calls we used to see as the complete drop-off we've seen would suggest. The rule change only affected airborne charges, and while they were common in the past, non-airborne charges still made up the majority of the charge calls in the past. I could go on with what I think is causing this, but this isn't the thread for that (and unlike cottage cheese, there's existing threads where this is relevant lol).

In short, what used to be a 50/50 call for blocking or a charge (based 100% on what that particular ref is feeling at that exact moment, or which team needs a make up call) has become a 66% blocking call/33% no call now. It's improved the game immensely, IMO.

If Iowa is as bad on NIL as Indy says they are it's a big risk for McCollum to take that job. Waiting another 7-10 for the carousel to spin his way might have been a better strategy.

This …

When’s the last time we had a floor slap on defense ???

This is the elephant in the room. We have a hard time adjusting to what teams do to us and that energy that we have seen in the past of slapping the floor is not there. We get frustrated when we cannot do what we want and just jack threes. If we cannot play our game and adjust accordingly, we can go far in the tourney.

I got a few scoops to add …

Will Wade to NC State … I’m told deal is done …

Ryan Odom to UVA … I’m told deal is done … Posted that on here a while ago but just confirming …

Ben McCollum to Iowa … Working through details but deal is close from what I’m told …

Porter Moser to Nova … I’m told it’s being finalized …

Medved to Minnesota … That deals been done for a while and I’ve already posted on here a while ago but just confirming …

WVU list remains as Mack, Cronin, Calhoun, C Fraz … McCollum has said no …

For Oklahoma … I’ve heard Hodgson is a name … 🦈
Looks like that was a shift. IMO Collins wouldn't have been the worst idea.

@Indy Illini Fan any truth to the rumors on X that Tucker DeVries milked his shoulder injury for another year of eligibility and this deal has nearly finalized for a minute now?

Finalized for a while now ? No … It got finalized this week …

Did Tucker sit out when he could’ve played this year ? I didn’t see any of the medical stuff but it’s not a coincidence he shut it down when everyone knew Iowa and Indiana were going to open and his Dad was going to be in the running for both …

Tucker’s also got some behavior concerns that need to get cleaned up … He would’ve fit right in with IU’s team last year, I’ll say that …

I made a comment about DeVries and how I think he’s a good coach but the way he treats other people and the way his former players talk about him is sometimes questionable … I stand by that …

This has to speak to some pathetically bad NIL at Iowa. If I’m from Iowa and I grew up an Iowa fan, I’m thinking twice before walking into the revolving door of delusional expectations and pressure that is Indiana Basketball in the modern era.
I guess if those are your options, would you rather go to a place with insanely high expectations, but every resource available to you to succeed? Or the place where you will get a much longer leash, but be kneecapped by 2nd rate resources?
Most competitors believe they will meet the expectations. They’d rather fail shooting for the moon than fail in a comfortable spot.
Iowa seems like a dead end for whomever takes it.

I figured he was looking to get out of Norman, as it's never seemed like a great fit for him there. Is his interest in Villanova stemming from being a private, parochial school like Loyola but in a bigger conference?
That was my thought too. Nova was probably comfortable he had experience at that type of school as well.

Is Oklahoma so heavy football that they won’t even chase the big names? How about Beard here?

If you notice charges taken aren't seen as a useful stat for determining top defenses: Swipe, steal, block, opposing shooting, etc. all are.

Seems like coaches realize that too.

Totally feel you, but you could also argue competitors believe in their ability to change the narrative … Bret Bielema MADE Illinois into a healthy spot, he didn’t come here because of it.

Either way, I would prefer a middle ground. Somewhere like Illinois or OSU has just as many resources as Indiana, or at least the disparity is immaterial to a life decision. The difference is Indiana fans have grown to become literally insane in what they feel they can expect. Regardless of how crazy we might seem, we don’t hold a candle to them.

Mr. Willard might screw Maryland over here.
I was curious if Nova could outperform Maryland NIL. Maybe Maryland football is being prioritized over basketball. Basketball is obviously the main show for Nova.

Iowa getting McCollum is the only way it makes sense for them to fire McCaffery, given what little resources Iowa has for NIL. I thought Fran did a pretty decent job with what little talent they have had over the years.
