Don’t rule out McCollum with WVU …

Calhoun’s team performance certainly didn’t help his chances last night …
I hope he does not go to Iowa, he may be able to do some damage in the B1G. What a shock to the system that would be going from high octane offense to ...Drake's offense.

Not very common to hear a coach talk about these things publicly. Seems like Willard is pissed and trying to send a message.

The NIL gripes are very valid and Willard should be making this front and center, but bringing up spending an "extra" night in New York, with your team, for Christmas is just high comedy. If this is your best example of being stifled about administration, then your situation is a lot better than you realize.

Look at their schedule, they played Syracuse on 12/21 and then back at home on 12/28. That means either they stuck around for four extra days in New York to celebrate Christmas or they went out of their way to come home, and then back up to NYC and wanted to spend multiple days up there. Also, your athletic department is $30+ million in debt right now and you're pissed about the athletic department trying to find low-hanging fruit to save money. You can't gripe about not having enough NIL when you're actively looking for ways to light money on fire.

I don't think Bill has lost his touch coaching ... I think there's been some bad talent and character evals as well as poor roster construction ...

This is where I'm at. Too many folks are reactionary to recent results. He brought in some really good pieces this year, including one that Illinois badly wanted for a while, and it couldn't have went worse. SRS also thinks this KU team was incredibly unlucky and was actually his third best team in the past seven seasons. Self's floor is still a top-8 seed, and the ceiling is still a 1-seed.

Maryland is such a bummer.

They openly never wanted to join the Big Ten and only did so because they felt they didn't have any other choice financially, and griping between the coaches and the administration is a grand tradition there that goes back to Gary Williams and Debbie Yow.

That was one of the great programs and venues in college basketball 20 years ago, must-see TV against Duke, and now it's just a McDonalds franchise.

It sucks man, it all sucks.

Brad has not spoken with any Texas people …

He’s focused on the team … He’s focused on Xavier … He’s focused on getting to San Antonio …

That’s from the man himself …
It would be self-sabotage if this was not the case. Brad (and his agent) knows that the best opportunity for financial leverage (or other job opportunities) is to take the Illini on another deep postseason run. Brad is a professional, so I expect nothing less.

One extra day was probably 12/22 after the game. He surely wasn't keeping everyone there through Christmas.

You could be right and that I'm too focused on him saying "celebrating Christmas". The Syracuse game was played in Brooklyn, so staying one night and that not be exactly Christmas and it's a reasonable request.

On the flip side, they might be the fan base with the most arrogance compared to historical accomplishments (2 Final Fours - fewer than Iowa! - that came in a very short glory years period just after 2000), so I kind of enjoy watching them struggle.

Agreed on their demise. My buddy was a walk-on for them decades ago and bleeds red and gold. He has never gotten over them leaving the ACC, or Cole Field House for that matter (which was indeed one of the storied NCAA venues and is now the indoor football practice facility. At least they didn't tear it down.) He tells me he wore a tux and brought champagne to the final game there in '02 v. UVa. They had a great program for a long while, though under Lefty it was fairly shady.

However, as a DMV resident who has to coexist with their fans, I couldn't be happier at their public struggle sessions. They are the most substantial, and most delusional, malcontents I've run across in D-1, and they're also unusually low-rent in their behavior. Meanest, most misanthropic fans I've encountered outside an Eagles game. They were baying for Willard's blood last December, and he probably should have been BT Coach of the Year. The fact that their AD is apparently kicking them to the curb for the fat stacks at SMU amuses me. I can't be bothered about whether Willard ends up at 'Nova.

Maryland Georgetown: two programs in this city having great, long runs but now living decades in the past. At least MD has hope. The Hoyas don't.

I'd much rather see McCollum end up in Morgantown, and not just because of my distaste for all things Iowa. I'm a sucker for guys who have done things the hard way. (Coming up through Juco.) I'd hate to see him languish in Iowa, trying to outsmart other smart guys without the means to attract similar talent.
Taking over a program that was the last team left out of the NCAA Tournament will be easier than taking over the program who was the last team in the B1G tournament...

That’s a wild scenario … But one you have to definitely consider …

Wade would be on the list … Beard would be on the list … McCasland would be on the list … Byington would be on the list … Mack would be on the list …
Is Florida a better job?

I'd love to know where coaches hold Texas in the ranking of jobs. I think the brand carries a lot more weight from negotiation fear than reality of the job.

- Facilities are great, but those don't matter as much in modern era
- It's a school that will never have basketball over football
- Basketball isn't the top interest, but Conte also has shown willingness to fire the coach
- The in-state talent was incredible in the 2010's but has cooled significantly with the rise of prep schools
- Hasn't been willing to break the bank on bball coach contracts (Beard took $5 million/year to go to Texas but was already making close to that at TTU and they were willing to go beyond Texas' offer)
- SEC is going to be awfully tough to win in bball going forward
- Rev share introduction will hurt schools like Texas that have copious donor lists
- Barnes had them burning hot in the first 2/3's of his tenure and Beard was turning them around, but Texas' bball history is underwhelming

I'm not blind that some of these weaknesses are related to strengths - Beard took the UT job instead of TTU for obvious benefits of being the Texas coach. They have a ton of money, and is their biggest/most important strength.

other schools will always show interest in Brad and Brads people will always take the phone call .
True, and don't we want it to be that way??

I think this just comes with the territory of having a top tier coach - if you want to play in this tier - compete for championships like Brad and JW say they do - you have to be able to take the heat that comes with it. I'd rather we have a coach that other teams are constantly trying to poach instead of having 100% assurance of continuity each year because nobody is interested in our guy.

(Along these lines, I think the exact reverse of this issue is the problem that some of us have with parts of our assistant staff this year. Obviously, OA and GA are guys that plenty of other programs would want, but I suspect that's the end of the list there for our assistants.)

"unusually low-rent in their behavior" - just a perfectly painted picture. Bravo. The few MD fans I've come across have shattered my perception of crab-cake eating croakies-wearing mid-atlantic bros - not that these types are particularly nice, but was not expecting vulgar scoundrels.
