i guess i would only add that the few hundred thousand spent on player development pails in comparison to the bad contracts and trades
Moz has given us over the last 5 years. good riddance. at some point its not all the ownerships fault. (and i'm no fan of the Dewitt's)
It is ownership's responsibility from the standpoint that they have left Mozeliak in charge during the last several years. Now they have a lameduck head of baseball operations (I apologize in advance if that is not the right title) and a lame duck manager.

I don't like the lame duck part of this at all. But, I don't have $4B to buy the Cards and fix it. Should we start a "GoFund me page"?

I get the frustration with not being able to free up 3B. However, if we were to trade Arenado for a bucket of balls when he still has 2 years on his contract after this season, everyone would be screaming bloody murder if he is even a 2 or 3 WAR player for his next stop. I don't think this prohibits us from seeing what Gorman has to offer at 3B as Arenado will definitely be DH for at least 30+ games this season, ASSUMING he stays with us all season. I think the Cardinals and Arenado both want to see him have a solid first half and build up his value.

I really like the direction they are heading with Chaim Bloom. I know Red Sox fans are angry about his trades not working out, but most would tell you that his development of the farm system was exceptional. If we can have Chaim focus on that this year, let the major leaguers show him what they have, and build the roster for next year with a plan to have a pipeline of cost controlled, major league ready players with 4 or 5 star talents in the next few years, we can have another great run of sustained success. We can't do it through Free Agency and Trades anymore because our farm system just hasn't produced (yet).

Even after a 12 game win improvement in 2024, the Cardinal ownership and management said that this club was in reset mode. As a fan, that reset should start immediately. As part of the reset, this team did not sign any major leaguers prior to the one player they added just recently. The Redbirds have made it perfectly clear that Areanado does not fit in their future plans. The reset will not be complete until they can somehow dispatch Areanado somewhere else. Even with Nolan Areanado on this team, the Cardinals are not a World Series contender. This just is not a championship roster in my view. I hope Nolan has a great 1st half; so that when they trade him at the trade deadline they can extract maximum value. The Cardinal minor league system is in the lowe r half of all of baseball. I saw one commentator say they are in the lower third. But I was corrected by someone else who said they are #18 in 2025. This is going to take some time unfortunately.

Totally agree with the state of things right now. Given the state of our minor league system and unwillingness to give out the big contracts to land impact players (and possibly get burned toward the end), I would say that it is reasonable to expect at least 3 years of mediocre teams. If anyone thinks they are a contender right now, I would not be able to defend that position.

Mikolas and Matz look better this spring than Gray. He has given up 15 ER in 9.2 innings pitched while allowing 6 HR and walking 6. I know we shouldn't pay attention completely to spring stats but last year Gray was bitten by the HR bug and I'm worried it could be trending that way again this year.
Unless they're competing for a roster spot, most pitchers are just working on getting their stuff right before the season starts. If Gray has a start like that to begin the season, then I'll be concerned.

With the reset on hold due to Areanado blocking the trade to Houston. Can anyone with more insight than I explain why this trade fell through? We all know that Areanado could veto any trade. Did management not communicate with Areanado before completing the trade? Or did Areanado back out after first agreeing to go to Houston?

From reporting in St. Louis, no, they agreed to the trade and then asked NA. Supposedly, he said no but might have been willing later on. Of course, Houston made other deals and now, really having no real need for him.

I knew about the possibilty of agreeing to a later trade. It is beyond me why management would not go to the player first instead of assuming he would agree.

Very happy for Luken and VS II to make the roster. I'm also interested to see that Matz is starting in the bullpen and Liberatore in the rotation. This is the year to give anybody on the roster who is young and unproven a chance to prove themselves. It may not result in many wins, but it will be interesting to see who meets the challenge.

Happy Opening Day! Time to enjoy the development and see what we have. I am committing to not watching Cardinals games this year with expectations of wins. What I want to see is competitiveness, fundamentals, and growth with our core young players. If I see that, I will be ecstatic regardless of what the scoreboard says. Go Cardinals!

I love this song on the first day of a new season.
