On top of that I would bet dollars to donuts that he got to shoot 3's in practice and if the staff said no shooting them in games, there was a good reason.
Bingo! While I may not always agree with BU I think it's very obvious that is the case. He doesn't play favorites and let Ben, Tre, Tomi, Kylan and others shoot and not Rez or Ty. He has referred often to how players shoot in practice. I wish Rez and Tre the best and I dont blame them for going elsewhere to essentially double the money. If someone approached me today I'd give my employer an opportunity to step up or would likely transfer too. After today I am focusing on who may want to be an Illini instead of who doesn't.. I think BU is to.

Morez in the old days would have developed into a decent jump shooter, and potentially a “good” set 3 point shooter. Problem is that takes about 3-4 years of competitive college level basketball. I don’t think him wanting to develop the skills he will need to be even able to make the NBA is wrong, but I do think it is a bogus excuse for leaving.

Morez (and his camp as they say these days) wanted to start and be allowed to work on his “deficiencies” in game situations. That just made no sense in helping us win. I absolutely loved his game as a future Kenny Battle type energy guy, but in the end he will get sold a story and given a bag and he will play the same role on another team as he did at Illinois.

Well Indy, you might be the only insider left at this point, so I'm going to ask you this... How is next season shaping up behind the scenes? I just feel like we don't carry any steam with some of the bigger fish out there (at the moment, and I know there could be more), except for Sarr. Which feels like we've lost steam there as well...

Isn’t BU’s explanation rather naive or patronizing?

Practice is practice, no screaming crowd, no make it or get pulled from the game, no scramble to claw back from a 15 pt deficit, no NIL pressure… etc, etc.

Practice stats may be a good predictor of ranking the game performance (I.e., best to worst on the team) but the success rate in an actual games is always going to be lower than in practice. It does not take a genius to understand that, it’s only a question of how much lower.

Great question, to add to this, how are the assistants handling all the conflicted coaching turmoil? Geoff and Orlando have been awfully quiet.

Is there a worse shot in college basketball than letting your 61% free throw shooting big man shoot mid-range jumpers?

And if he misses, your best rebounder won’t be in position to get the rebound.
Well there’s been quite a few decent 3 point shooters with subpar free throw shooting percentages, free throws are more mental and involved more concentration.

Moving on from Morez - I liked his game a lot and will root for him wherever he goes. I was one of the first ones on here to start calling for him to start given I thought that was our best lineup.

But once the family starts getting involved claiming “you are misusing my son” it usually doesn’t end well for the player. Morez was not misused, in fact he was put in such a position to succeed he got a 7 figure NIL offer from us and apparently a $1.8M NIL offer from somewhere else. Just say thank you to the coaches and move on- going on a media tour to complain about how the coaches didn’t see your son’s awesome shooting ability and they should have sacrificed team success for showcasing your sons outside shooting ability is crazy town and next year would have been tumultuous if he had stayed- we already heard some grumblings this year from the family in Dec

So there is no sense bemoaning his loss now given it wouldn’t have worked well if he stayed with a helicopter parent criticizing every move. Good luck to Morez but it can’t be here

How many above average 3 point shooters do you know that shoot 60% from the free throw line?

It’s a statistical oddity itself that Humrichous only shoots 70.5% from the free throw line as an average 3 point shooter.
Moreover - having the time and space to load and shoot against 6'4" HS centers (when you're 6'9") is a little different than 6'6+" college athletes.

I don’t feel like we are as active as we need to be in the portal …

I think there’s a better chance Dix winds up at Indiana with DeVries or back to Iowa than coming here … But they do really want him …

Sandfort doesn’t move the needle …

We really aren’t that involved with any big fish …

I’ve heard from a couple different people that Brad seems somewhat “checked out” …

Wishing the best for Morez. He may be a kid with a big paycheck but he’s still a kid. Don’t know what’s true, but one of the toughest things for some young athletes is to balance the different voices, especially those from parents. And most parents are just trying to do what they think is best for their child. IMO it is far easier to play than to watch your kid or grandkid.

@djkirkpatrick22 put some respect on Sharpshot…he’s still around lol

As far as the topic at hand, I feel there aren’t really that many big fish that would move the needle this year. A bunch of average/above average kids in the portal. I don’t see us constructing a roster that would compete with the likes of the teams in the Kenpom top 8 from this year. Just my opinion.

We would need Tomi, Will, KJ, etc…to come back for us to really have final four potential

We aren’t getting there with Bam, DGL, Dix and whatever else they scrounge up.

Also - if Brad is really acting “checked out” while losing 90% of his roster again…Josh needs to think long and hard about the future of the program…sigh

Looking like it might be a rough next year if we can’t grab a couple good players.

Some decent 3 point shooters haven't been great at free throws, therefore not great free throws shooters are decent 3 point shooters?
