I don’t feel like we are as active as we need to be in the portal …

I think there’s a better chance Dix winds up at Indiana with DeVries or back to Iowa than coming here … But they do really want him …

Sandfort doesn’t move the needle …

We really aren’t that involved with any big fish …

I’ve heard from a couple different people that Brad seems somewhat “checked out” …
I’m concerned about losing out on big fish like we did last year (Brea, Oweh, Kadary) and then we had to go overseas to get talent, though very young.

Hope that doesn’t become a trend this year.

@Indy Illini Fan - does this seam realistic?

Sounds like Tomi and Big Z will test NBA draft waters. Could we lock Tomi in so he doesn’t portal while doing that? Also, could we still pull off Big Z?

I like those 2 with Kylan and Sarr, assuming we can lock him down. Get a grizzled PG starter and some veteran high/mid-major guys to fill out the roster, all JR and SR guys.

Alright. I looked at returning minutes in the B1G from 2022 (the start of instant transfer eligibility) to 2025. Keep in mind that this doesn't only reflect transfer out, but also graduating players and players who turn pro.

A few takeaways:

The overall average returning minutes in the B1G from 2022 to 2025 is 47%.

For 2025 specifically, the average is 41%, down from 54% in 2022. So continuity is in decline overall.

Illinois returned an average of 37% of our minutes.

Only three teams returned less than that on average; Michigan, Washington, Minnesota. From 2022 to 2025, there was only one 20-win season between those three teams.

Not surprisingly, Purdue has the highest average returning minutes over that time period with 67%.

Here are the full rankings:

RankTeamAverage Returning Minutes
1Purdue67%
2Northwestern63%
3Wisconsin59%
4IU57%
5MSU56%
6UCLA56%
7Iowa53%
8Rutgers49%
9Maryland48%
AVERAGE47%
10Nebraska46%
11USC42%
12Penn St.42%
13Oregon42%
14OSU40%
15Illinois37%
16Michigan35%
17Washington33%
18Minnesota28%
So it appears that Brad is better than other teams, even with less returning during this 4 year stretch. Since during this timeframe, only Purdue had a better record.

With all due respect, I bet my imaginary beach house that there is no P4 program (at least at Illinois' level) that will give Ben the minutes he got and will get here, or the NIL $ he got paid or will be paid. He does seem like a good kid but please don't insult our intelligence by playing the "loyalty" card. He's here because we're his best opportunity, by huge margin, whereas White and Johnson are likely to get much better opportunities (pay and/or play) going somewhere else.

This "meeting" is going to be the stuff of legends.

"I heard that Josh told Brad its your kid or its you"

"I heard that Brad said he's untouchable and Josh can't do anything about it"

"I heard TA told them he can shut Illinois out of Chicago recruiting for good"

"I heard Bryce Hopkins was there"

"I heard Kofi slapped Morez Sr. across the face"

"I heard all the remaining players came in and placed their jerseys on Josh's desk"

Totally agree …

I still think Conwell ends up in Austin …

IU overpays for Dix and Bidunga …

I do find it to be the least surprising thing ever that literally none of the WVU kids have any interest in following DeVries to IU …
DeVries a bit of a prick?

Sorry Pru I might have used the wrong word with "exit interview", too much a business term and maynot have been the best wording. I employed over 60 people in my company and certainly had to fire some, I would not refer to that as an exit interview, more one sided as in here's your final check now get out. But when someone quit, particularly if unexpected and especially if it was a high value employee, I wanted to know why from them, not from a direct supervisor. I didn't have many, but I did find out some interesting information. It was up to me to discern if it was bs or what was actually going on. But I wanted hear it directly from the employee. Glad I am done with all that. Chilling out in Florida for the winter enjoying some golf and a good amount of adult beverages. Rock on my friend!
Prudential had the same reasoning as you stated about finding out if an employee quit was it because of us or the employee got a better offer , etc,,,etc....

my memory of the term " exit interview " in my career consisted of an interview with a terminated employee who wasn't strong enough to do the task of being a registered rep and putting in the time and effort needed to succeed........our numbers showed that if I hired 5 people today that after 5 years only 1 would still be under employment with us........

People looking for a job back in the late 90's and the first decade of the 2000's would lie , cheat and do anything for a job with us , even to the point of lying about their past as if we wouldn't do an extensive background check......lol.....had one dude who answered no to any felonies and our check showed numerous felony drug charges.........I got to where I just shook my head about believing anything I was told.........

But most of my exit interviews were very brief or they never got conducted by the terminated ex reps.........

Just going to say that the sheer volume of GIFs Indy must have in his computer files has to be the stuff of legends. There always seems to be the right GIFs to say everything.

Now I see why Jay Wright and Coach K checked out when they saw what was coming. Lots of sleazy promises on both sides for a one night stand (one year equivalent of college hoops). It should be no surprise that Rick Pittino, Bail and Cal didn't mind hanging around a little longer. I get the "fairness" of it all but it doesn't need to be my hard earned tax dollars funding these brief non-academic careers (tuition, room/board, travel, team expenses) in addition to the "nightly rate" they get thru NIL.

If Brad is checked out, I can understand why.

This past year was a complete rebuild. He lost an All-American, a B1G first team guy, a couple of seniors, then a few more through the transfer portal.

So what did he do? He goes out and builds a team that’ll stick around a few years.

I’m sure he figured he’d get:

- 2 years out of Morez
- 2 years out of Tre
- 2 years out of Ivisic
- 2 years out of Boswell
- 2 years out of Ben (with the rule change)
- 2 years of our Jake
- Maybe 2 years of our Riley
- Plus at the time he was thinking another 2 years out of Ty

It was a smart plan. You take your lumps in year 1, then year 2 is a F4 type season.

Sure, you lose your star I’m KJ, but you replace him in the portal, and you’re off to the races.

Then you likely lose Riley to the draft.

Plus, you lose Morez and Tre to the portal. I’m sure he’s partly to blame for that, but it’s also a new NIL world, where a guy like Morez is now worth $2m.

And all of a sudden, it’s another complete rebuild and we likely have less resources than some of our peers (if we didn’t, we would’ve just matched the offer for Morez).

So I can understand it if Brad is tired/burnt out/checked out. I would be too.

But—like someone else said, the show must go on. Brad’s gotta get his head in the game or else next season could be ugly.

I would disagree that retaining 2 players on a team graduating 0 meaningful contributors is a good start.

Returning 0-1 players is not some benchmark, where returning 2 makes for a good start. Only retaining 2 of potentially 6-8 guys is a very bad start to an off-season. Retaining less than 20% of your roster in consecutive years with no changes at the top, is a degree of turnover not standard in any era of basketball, including this one.
Let's wait and see who we return. As it stands today feel it's likely 3 or 4 but possibly more. I'd expect at least 3 of Boz, Jakyst, Tomi and Jake are back. Wait and see on Ty or Will depending on draft feedback if we offering 2 million or even a lil more. I expect DGL and Ty are likely to leave.

Is there any update on any Euro bigs or Sarr? If we get 2 of those and Dix that's a good mix.

Maybe he ought to do some introspection and try to figure out if there is something he and his staff could be doing better to retain players or if there are changes to who/how they recruit to target players we think will stay for more than 1 year.
