I believe BU buyout is about $26 million. Is it different for a non BiG10 school?
I think that its only $10 million. I read he has 5 years remaining on his deal, and his buyout is $2 million per year remaining (double if he leaves for another B10 school).

I think the $26 million people mention is the fully guaranteed amount remaining on his contract for the next 5 years which he would be technically owed if fired without cause. Realistically, though, he and any other fired coach is obligated to pursue work to offset the amount owed. Even if he is fired with cause its unlikely the school will pay him more than $10 million. The most likely outcome is they negotiate a buyout in that scenario instead of dealing with the offset over the next 5 years.

Edit: Similarly Oats buyout is $18 million unitl March, 2026 when it drops to $10 million.

I don’t understand how people can continue to massively overstate buyout amounts. These contracts are public record, and a simple Google search on “(name of coach) buyout” gives plenty of sources with answers.

Don't think $$ is primary factor for Porter, heard his family is very well off.He will probably stay in the midwest at a school of preference.
Absolutely. Of all coaches, Porter Moser is probably the last one you'd use to argue that salary is a primary motivator. For goodness sakes he bought Tom Rickett's mansion while he was still at Loyola.

He bought a $2.5 million house on a $1.1 million salary. That sounds pretty run-of-the-mill to me.

He also took a massive raise when he went to Oklahoma, despite having a really nice house in Wilmette, which is an awesome place to live. Even wealthy people like money.

And this is the kind of take you get when you have a myopic focus on a single elimination tournament to the exclusion of 90% of the season.

Porter Moser is 25-45 in the Big 12/SEC and has never finished in the top half of a P4 conference. He's shown no ability to win at a high major. In no world is his resume "pretty equal" to Underwood's.
Moser at Oklahoma in the SEC is a way more difficult spot than Underwood at Illinois.

I think they are comparable. Oklahoma made the final four in 2002. Illinois has never had a player as good as Blake Griffin. Both teams have had their ups and downs in the last 25 years.

I’m not arguing with you , as Moser seems like a good guy and decent coach . not sure of his recruiting chops . but winning the B1G is pretty much as hard as winning the B12 or SEC .

now , I will grant you that recently , the top 6 teams in either of those leagues are maybe a tad better than the top 6 in the B1G

3/4 of that record is in the Big 12. In fact, he took over a program that had been to the tournament in all 3 prior non-Covid seasons, and 7 of the prior 8 non-Covid seasons (including 1 FF and 1 S16), and proceeded to miss the tournament three years straight (all with the Big 12). He has done worse than his predecessor, while I think we can all agree BU has done better than his.

As annoying as Chris was as a Duke player he has proven to be a very good college basketball coach. I always thought of NW as the place coaches go to end their careers but Chris has taken them to Big dance multiple times and upset top teams like #1 Purdue and Elite 8 Illini during regular season.. His players play hard and they run a gimmick trap all the time defense that works. I wish our team always played that hard on defense.

I am surprised that a blue blood big dollar school did not notice have offer him the moon to move. I would be scared to see what Chris could do if he got some real talent but I don't think NW will ever by a $$NIL school.

Made me sad to see Kendall Gills kid sign LOI to NW. Hope he excels then enters the portal to play for the Flying Illini redux!

I just think that the top tier teams in the Big12 and SEC have been significantly better than the best Big10 team in recent years.

The only truly elite Big10 team recently was Purdue last year and then I think the final Ayo/Kofi team was in that realm.

The Kofi/Frazier team that won the big10 title would have been middle of the pack in either of those other conferences.

The Big10 has a lot of solid programs but no truly elite ones imo which shows up in March as the reason the Big10 hasn't been winning championships. The Kaminsky Wisconsin team and 05 Illinois team are two of the very few elite teams in the conference over the last 20 years.

Yeah I feel like he should've been the heir to the duke job but I don't think he would relinquish control to too many outside influences including coach emeritus.

Good reminder that athletic leadership are bad negotiators. Collins is fine, better than NW likely deserves. That said, no way should he be in the top half of B1G paid coaches.
You think theres 9 better coaches in the big ten?

Another aspect of this is how bad a job NW is. Sometimes you gotta over pay to keep good talent in less than ideal situations.

I don't think he's doing too bad. He took over a program that had averaged 11-12 games a year the prior 3 seasons. He predictably had a rough first season with only 7 wins, but then doubled that in year 2 to 15 wins. And they are in the games. Played Drake within 6 and 10 in their 2 games. Lost in 2OT to Bradley. It will be interesting to see if he can take another step next season and get to 20 wins.
Sure- but that doesn't remotely put him in the category to be considered for the Illinois job anytime soon.

he won’t be for long

Totally disagree. He’s a class act from top to bottom and has raised the bar at NW. I’d be proud to have him coach at Illinois. With our resources and reputation, he’d kill it.

Jon Scheyer has done well but how much is just due to ridiculous roster and obscene $NIL. The Coach K coaching tree is pretty bare now that Mike Brey retired from ND. Collins and Scheyer are only successful ones left.

Johnny Dawkins - fired from Stanford (now at UCF has missed NCAA tournament 6 years in row)
Jeff Capel - fired from Oklahoma (now at Pitt always on hot seat)
Tommy Amaker - fired from Michigan (now at Harvard does Ivy even count?)

Some assistant coaches step up without missing beat like Izzo, Tommy Lloyd etc. Other fail - Kyle Neptune (Villanova) , Adrian Autry (Syracuse), Hubert Davis (UNC still has not hit bottom), Travis Steele (Xavier), ...

Well… hoping things aren’t heating up between Brad & A&M and that’s why the recruiting thread has gone silent….
