I’m not on X. I know his mom is a bit nuts, but can someone explain the drama?

Rooting for DGL big time. Hope he kills it at his next stop.
His mom is saying some really vile disgusting things about Dra’s girlfriend. The mom is a nutcase and can’t accept the fact there is another woman in her son’s life. It’s awful and must be so terrible and embarrassing for Dra to have to deal with.

Still have to coach, score on off night, get all-americans to play defense, in bounds plays(these are...oof, compared to rest of NCAA)

What is this about?
Mom is a total head case and has sabotaged much of DGL's career. She likes to talk sh$t on social media about nonsense and has gained a reputation of being a very problematic parent. It has not helped DGL and that is (I think) what he is referring to here. I feel for the guy. Seems like a very good young man despite all that craziness.

To build on this, the whole thread really got going when Dre's mom insinuated that it was the girl who was the cause of Dre's diminished performance on the court towards the end of the season.

I realize I am naive, but I don't see how this is sustainable. $4 million for Dain? I mean I consider him a good player, but that means to have a shot at the Natty, teams have to pony up $20 for a starting lineup? Plus more for a decent 8-9 man rotation? Where is this money coming from suddenly? Are the big money donors getting a return? I'm sure they didn't get wealthy by making investments with sub par ROI. How are athletic departments going to service their debt/bonds in a rising interest rate environment? Seems like just a few short years ago when it was impossible ever dream of finding the money needed to replace SFC.
Let's look at this like the business it is.

The Wall Street Journal recently published figures for all Division 1 programs, here: https://www.wsj.com/sports/basketball/ncaa-tournament-march-madness-ncaa-team-value-98c44e14 Yes, I know that every athletic department accounts differently for various items, but for the purposes of this exercise, let's presume the figures are 'in the ballpark.' The Top 20 revenue teams average over $31.1 million.

Now look at that from the players' perspective. They could (rightly) argue that revenue is generated mainly off of their efforts. They could argue that they should earn a percentage of the revenue. They could point to the NBA, where players have negotiated a 51% of basketball related revenue. They could further argue that the cost structure in college basketball is probably lower than the NBA, due to no need to pay for major capital expenditures (arenas typically funded by donors) less travel, smaller support staff (which can be amortized across multiple sports), and that all major schools operate as non-profits (so no need to build profit into the financial model).

Is it unreasonable for players to think that schools ought to be able to share at least half of revenues with them, or $15 million-plus for the roster? And note, this is only from a share of the schools' revenue -- popular players still can earn separate monies from leveraging their names, images and likenesses.

In short, I don't think where the numbers have gotten to are all that crazy, from a strictly business perspective.

I don't know of many businesses that pay 50% of their revenue to salaries. Normal range is 20-30%. 50% of operating expenses? Yes. But not 50% of revenue. Pay to play has gotten out of hand, and the crash is just a matter of time. Remember, these "salaries" do not come from the university. They come from the "collective."

Feel bad for Dra. I hope he's awesome moving forward and will be cheering for him. Wish he got more tick when he was here. Love the energy and passion. Growing up as an athlete (not nearly as good as Dra), unfortunately ran across a couple of crazy moms in our class and the class just below us. They do an excellent job of ruining what should be an unbelievable experience for their kids. It's really sad!

I worry that as soon as they put any kind of cap on what they can receive, then the KU's and teams like that will go back to breaking the rules and paying more under the table. The NCAA will continue to pick and choose who it punishes and who it doesn't. The NCAA will never be fair on this, and we will be right back in the same spot as before, where the certain programs will get a free pass and others will be nailed. As of right now, if you have the money you can get many of these players. I know the NCAA hates having more of an even playing field.
Also, I think the real losers in the "pay era" have to be the mid-majors, or teams like Gonzaga who have had a lot of success, but may not have a conference that generates the money that the B10, SEC, ACC, etc...makes.

Oh yeah, he is a class act.

I pray right now that Jesus Himself gives him true peace that only comes from a relationship with Him.

Dra, we love you and support you forever. Thank you for your allegiance to the university and to the state of Illinois.

God bless.

Illinois has become the guy that sat across from me in a poker table today...he bet I raise, he folded, never had crap, but I knew he was weak.

I feel like we are becoming the punching bag and folding on the flop

I am looking forward to seeing Dra play at UNLV when they come to UNR.
Not sure how new coach Josh Pastner will do there, but he did win an NC at AZ so I would suspect he is in a more comfortable locale.
Mountain West isn't B1G, and yet the kid from NM portalled his way to big bucks. I wouldn't be surprised to see Dra play as well or better. I think he will get plenty of tick, and open looks!
