What concerns me is "fans", who have no clue about the situation, insulting one of our players by suggesting his (and his advisors') thought process is based on willful ignorance.
Just wondering where you thought the insult was? He could very well be right. We all love will and we all want him to do well. That said, he needs a LOT of physical development, he was taken advantage of on defense and he didn't have an explosive first step. They said, he could go on an incredible heater and it was fun to watch. He carried us a couple of times.

I don't think that it's unreasonable to think that he and his agent don't want any of that to be uncovered if he's getting good feedback from a couple of teams.

Will is going to be an interesting case. He's clearly a project from a physical standpoint. It's going to take time. He's still a kid.

He seems to be mocked in the mid 20's. If that's the case, he's going to get drafted by a team that's pretty good and potentially really good(championship level) and they'll have absolutely no need to play an underdeveloped 18 year old. That's a tough spot for him. That said, as long as he doesn't slip into that second round, he's guaranteed money.

If he goes 5 on 5 and slips because of the above, a LOT changes. The poster was right. Sometimes the less you(or they) know, the better. Will could be in that category. That's not an insult. It's the reality in big business with huge dollars on the table.

I've heard a lot of Will Riley lottery buzz the last few days.
In pro sports, draft season = lying season and see what sticks. The only way he sniffs the lottery is if he has an outrageously great combine. He has good measurables(height) and has flashes of being really good. He also has flashes of being really lost. This NCAA Tournament encapsulated Will, at this point of his career, perfectly.

Xavier - Wow! He's on automatic and is carrying us!

Kentucky - Wow! What the "flip" is he doing? He's killing us.

What does a scout see? Some are going to see:

1)The Xavier game and focus on the upside.

2)The Kentucky game and freak out about the athleticism bothering him.

3)Use all of the info and under that he's still 17/18 and the variance of where he is and what he could be is enormous.

Will, if drafted at 12, could end up being an enormous bust.

Will, being drafted at 26, could be the steal of the draft.

He is a complete unknown, but it's far more likely that someone sees through the struggles and bets his upside at 25 to 29, than it is for a team to go "all in" and bet their future on him at 10-13.

In fairness, I guarantee him a spot in the top 14 if he comes back to Illinois next year!

Seriously, that would be amazing for him. Anything top 20 would be homerun

There's a fine line between "great publicity for Illinois, with not one but two top-20 picks" and "two top-20 picks, 7th in the B1G, and Illinois doesn't even make the second weekend? what happened?". Hoping to hear more of the former of course...

So we're into the eating our own stage of the summer...kinda early...

Your original post was in regards to his coaching and the utilization of KJ, who apparently TU mismanaged into 3rd-team All-Big Ten as a true freshman. At the time KJ was playing, TU did in fact have coaching experience. And assuming he is indeed architect of our offense, then is experience was in crafting a top-3 offense on an Elite Eight team.
Oh? Do tell.

Lmao...so from trying to change it to your own argument to telling me what I'm thinking when I post. That's a leap!

Not everything needs to be a serious debate. I know some of you need it like air and water.

Juiceman pretty much summed it up.

Who has said the latter? I haven't heard or read that anywhere yet, but would be interested to know who has said it.

Mavs win the Cooper Flagg sweepstakes. Nico Harrison falls upwards into the #1 pick.

Or he could draft KJ as Luka’s replacement ;)

Juiceman pretty much summed it up.

No he didn't....he followed your new argument that he was experienced because he coached here last year.

I was attempting to make a joke about analytics more than anything else.

But here, you win your own argument. I concede.
My post was a poor attempt at some TU schadenfreude, which was always going to bring in this crowd that can't let anything go without an obnoxious attempt to debate with their own version of whatever comment they read.

Well... we've seen it before. Kofi opted to take the advice of his advisors instead of returning for another year. He later said he regretted it. Adam Miller has expressed regret as well and Coleman Hawkins has certainly waxed nostalgically about his four years at Illinois, glossing over his brief stop at K-State. Hell, even Ayo didn't go as high in the draft as many -- including himself -- thought he would. College basketball has no shortage of players who project themselves higher in the draft than they end up going, so it's not necessarily an insult to wonder if Will is doing the same, considering his projections have been all over the board.

If Will stays in the draft, my hope is that he climbs into the lottery or at least very close to it. The Combine is where players often hear the hard truth. Will opting to not play in the 5-on-5 concerns me in that he may not be open to hearing unflattering reports. A player who's a consensus lottery pick like KJ has something to lose by playing and very little to gain. Riley though may need to prove something to up his position, but may also drop considerably if he plays poorly.

I was at MSG for Duke game. Flagg is an enigma. Good at many things - athletic, rebounding, shooting, ball handling, passing shot blocking but not stellar at any of them. I wish we could have seen Morez guard him. Like Caitlin Clark he will have tremendous pressure to become the best player in the league.

Mavs would have been better off keep Luka and adding Cooper to the mix. Anthony Davis is a walking injury machine. Last 4 years he has played 40, 56, 76 and 51 games and he is 32 so it is only going to get worse. Plus he does not want to play center - his best position.

1. Take potshots at one of the scapegoats designated from on high.

2. Get responses defending the target of said potshots.

3. "It was a joke," "tongue-in-cheek," "why take everything so seriously."

4. Take umbrage at continued responses to the discussion you started.

5. Repeat.

5-9 broke pretty well for KJ I’d say… all need point guards, and in a range for him that makes sense. Good result.

Absolute floor would be Portland, and I’d argue that would put him in the best position for long term success.

Good trade. Luka wanted to get 200M+, but didn't want to put the effort in to stay in shape. He was a joke on defense and he's already getting nagging injuries. Way too young for that. Now, the Lakers have to deal with introducing him to a treadmill and keeping him out of the fast food drive thru.

It will never not be wild to me how obviously the NBA rigs their lottery.

Mavericks do the league a solid and ship Luka to LA to replace LeBron and get rewarded with Flagg.

Cavs get gifted Kyrie because LeBron left.

Bulls get DRose and so on.

Givony, in his post-draft mock, had KJ going to Houston at 10 and Will Riley going to Orlando at 16.

I'd fear for KJ if he ends up in Washington with how much of an absolute mess that franchise is.
