4m --> 2m is just me reiterating what other people (yet people I think probably know) have said. The telling part is that all of their leverage (Illinois, Duke, Oregon, NBA, Barcelona) has now completely vanished.
Again I think this is vastly overstating the case. Coward is showing up as 1st round on some mocks. Other teams have high-priced players that may opt to stay in the draft (like Michigan). If Kansas were to low-ball Sarr I am confident other teams would jump in. Barcelona is not the only Euroleague team that would want Sarr. In fact, Real Madrid might like and be willing to pay for the opportunity to roster a guy who was once a prized possession of their bitter rival.

And $4 million is what they were asking, not what anyone was paying. When negotiating you always ask for a really high amount, not expecting to get it but hoping to draw the offers up. There's even a term for it - it is called "anchoring." The side asking for money tries to "anchor" high and the side who would have to pay tries to "anchor" low. There's a whole host of psychology behind it that shows you get more money if you anchor high, even if it's not a realistic ask, because the other side compares future negotiations to the starting point. And this is proof positive it's working. If Sarr gets $2 million he's increased his NIL deal by something in the$500k to $1M range, and you think his camp is "in shambles" over it. Kansas fans might think they got a bargain. But in the end Sarr got more money, not less. Maybe it ends up there was point at which he could have done better, but it seems likely this process will have succeeded in increasing his NIL from where it was when we thought we had him.

I've been hesitant to say anything about this, because I know the zealots will go nuts, but I'm not thrilled with college basketball becoming the Euro league Jr, especially our team.

I agree 1000% with the statement, there's something special about seeing guys from Peoria lead the Illini to national success. Now that works especially for me being in the Bloomington/Peoria area, but the same holds true I'm sure for people around Lincoln with Brian Cook, or all the Chicago people with the many players from there. It's extra special to be able to watch guys close to home on TV.

Yes we always wanted the best talent so we weren't opposed to a Deron Williams or a Kofi Cockburn, but Mihailo Petrovic is a little different. We could watch Kofi on TV. There are fans in Dallas that could go watch Deron play. Sure, the largest number of fans are in state and there's always extra hope for the best in state players, but we've got fans all over.

We don't have a lot of fans in the Balkans though. Sure we can find clips and games of those guys online, but it's in a foreign language we can't understand. No one is going to swing by a game and give a live report showing up in Illini colors. There are no connections to these guys. I think there is already an issue with the transfer portal leading to a lack of affinity for players, look no further than Ben Humrichous. If Humrichous was in his 4th year at Illinois would he have gotten the same response last season? And he was from Indiana, not Croatia.

I just keep going back to a lot of things in this new world, if you are going to spend that much money, if you are going to turnover your roster every year, if you are going to bring in guys from foreign lands that no one knows, you better win. And I'm not talking 20 wins, 5th in the Big Ten winning 1 tourney game. If you're going to completely change the way college basketball has been for decades, you better win big.
Peoria Manual won 4 straight AA titles. Bloomington Normal Lincoln Springfield Champaign Urbana Danville always had competitive teams along with Quincy and others. Lots of great players that went to Illinois and Duke Kansas Kentucky and midmajors. Not that hot bed now. Still great basketball tho.

Just an FYI- it appears DGL mom's twitter has been deactivated. Thank goodness, that poor kid didn't deserve the psychotic stuff she was saying!

No more free entertainment either, however

I can understand where you’re coming from, but I don’t care if these kids are from Pluto. I want to win.

Are there still reclass rumblings with Constanza or locked into '26? Would honestly be great either way... 6"8 scoring point-forward, looks fairly the part as an athlete.

When it comes to Dame Sarr, you can play the money game but there's something I don't like where it seemed like we discovered him and then he paraded our offer around to draw interest. It really does make sense he'd end up at Kansas, home to big money questionable character players.

On the flip side, these moves could create a fanbase in the Balkans. Like if you ask them name an American college basketball team they say Illini, and then long-term Balkan players know the Illini are a team worth playing for.

LvilleIll1, are we still top on thus guy too? I'd love those 2 guys in 2026. Also, is Luigis agents Geoffs too?

Whatever happened to the other tall Canadian kid we were looking at? I think he played with Will. Did he commit anywhere?

driving up interest is agent-ing 101: standard practice

It's ok. He will struggle this year and transfer to us next year.
