I don't know if Dan will approve this new thread or not, but it seems like we have so many baseball fans on the forum it's appropriate. I like what's going on with the Cardinals, my favorite team, these days. They're not winning games by slugging home runs all over the place, They're winning with solid starting pitching, excellent defense, and timely hitting. I see the Cubs, who are having a good season, have been better on the road than in the Friendly Confines. There's one more fact I find a head scratcher. The Rockies have only 9 wins on the season. There must be plenty of AAA teams across the country that could do better. Maybe a lot better. Is the White Sox record for futility last year in jeaopardy?

My Vote is yes. I have been a Cubs fan since the 1960s. I went to McKendree College, and we had a group that attended Cardinal games, often the Cardinal Cub series games.

I would enjoy a baseball thread.

The Cubs and Cardinals threads of fairly active, unless this is meant to be a thread to discuss the entire league as a whole, like what Aaron Judge is doing and what the WBC USA team will look like.

In addition to being a Cubs fan, I am interested in all Baseball and follow Judge and his attempt to hit 400 daily.

Not only .400, but also on pace for 55+ HR's. That is insane behavior at the plate.

Is Massey the only Illini in the bigs right now?
Tyler Jay is in Brewers org at AAA. Was in majors for a bit last year.

For other Illinois schools, former Cub and current White Sox player Mike Tauchman played at Bradley I’m pretty certain. Paul DeJong from ISU was in league to start year. Not sure if iBrock Stewart is still in league, but he’s a former Redbird.

DeJong is playing for the Nats but has been on the IL after getting hit in the face with a pitch. Stewart is a reliever for the Twins.

Former Illini, Andrew Hoffman, was brought up to the Kansas City Royals yesterday. So, 2 Illini in the Show and both with the Royals … my new second favorite team.

Some rare feats here, but what are some of the records do you think will be the toughest to break? The consecutive game streak will never be broken. Batting .400 and the hit streak will be a tall order. Do you think any pitcher will ever join the 300 win club.
No pitcher will hit 300 wins unless they go back to a 4 man rotation. These days, they have 5 man rotations AND bullpen days so…no chance.

Pretty soon getting Skubal'd will be a thing, if it isn't already.
He is having a Kerry Wood-like night as he is striking out almost everybody so far working his way to 20+.

This is the first time I am seeing him this season on Sunday night baseball at sold out Tiger stadium against the Twins.

does anyone watch the Home Run Derby or the All Star game anymore ?

Not really. If I’m around I might watch a few minutes of either — more likely the game than the Derby. The Futures Game holds much more appeal for me, and I watched 6 or 7 innings.

I might possibly watch part of the game, but I don't have plans to sit down and watch

So what was everyone's thoughts on the "Swing-Off" tiebreaker? Specifically, if your only two options for tiebreakers in the regular season were a swing-off (perhaps with a system like in hockey where you get a "point" for a swing-off loss) compared to starting with a runner on 2nd base, which one would you choose?

My opinion - I think it's GREAT for the All-Star game as it was explained to me (I missed the game), but I'm still not sold on it being used in the regular season even if you altered the standings to give some weighting to swing-off losses.

My humble opinion only.

The swing off is not actually baseball - no pitching, no defense, no strikes, no balls. I have never liked the HS softball courtesy/ghost runner concept currently used in extra innings, but at least the rest of the elements are baseball, and there is tangible benefit for preventing the other team from scoring. Having the whole team sit to watch a 60 year old coach pitch BP in order to decide games that actually count would be ... dissappointing.

Didn’t see it, but you perfectly captured my thoughts when I heard about it. Pass.

I'm okay with it as a gimmick to use just in an event like the All-Star Game.

I did like the Automated Balls and Strikes they used and I think it shouldn't be too much of an issue if it's something similar in the regular season next year.

It was fine for an ASG. Baseball that counts, no way.

So the hot stove is heating up. /s

Royals acquired Adam Frazier this week from Pittsburgh. And just saw that Texas and Phillies swapped middle reliever types — Dane Dunning and Jose Ruiz.
