Failed at Arkansas.

Tell me, how’s Arkansas been doing in the seven years and two coaches since they parted ways?

BB was there five seasons. Three bowls. Won two of those. Exactly same as current HC. Who, btw, was BB’s OL coach for first thee of BB’s years there. So, after two year disaster of Chad Morris, they went back to Bielema ball. (Btw, current HC been there for five seasons. Three bowls.)

Aside from all that, I was most pleased when BB was hired at Illinois.

He left Madison after a string of three(3) consecutive Rose Bowls.

He’d still be HC in MadTown now if he had stayed, if he wanted to be.

Wisconsin’s rise traces back to Hayden Fry. BB is a Hayden guy through and through. I believe BB sees the Illini as more of an Iowa than a Sconsin.

Is absolutely no secret that JW wanted to emulate Iowa and Wisconsin sustained program success.

JW took an unfortunate shot at following Ron Turner’s suggestion re Lovie.

Cut Lovie Loose and immediately, immediately got the guy steeped in Iowa and Wisconsin programs.
Yeah I mean he went 11-29 in the SEC during his time at Arkansas, and I just had a lot of Badger fans in my ear talking about some of his baggage, which I won’t go into detail about. No need to be hostile!!!

I’ll add to this…..Bielema refused to do one thing that every other SEC coach was doing at the time…..that one thing is now legal….

in November 2020, I would love to know if BB had someone contact JW first, after Lovie was canned , or if it was the other way around .
If so, did JW contact BB before Lovie was canned ? many of us had speculated BB was on the shortlist, as was Liepold. Not sure if there was a third guy ever acknowledged in the mix .

I dont think any of us thought Matt Campbell would leave Iowa st, so not sure if that name ever got traction

I'll be honest when we hired Brett I was skeptical but I also knew Brett was good at Wisconsin with solid line work, running backs and tight ends. Just what Illinois needed for their build. Thank you coach.

Sutter question - how much is his brother a role in this and what's his name? All this talk about the # of commits, if you land him that'd be a 2 in 1 - and obviously you do it to get Mack no ifs, ands, and buts about it.
Brother (Bo) is not in the same class, and the family has had ties to multiple programs.
Ken Sutter Sr. - father of Ed, Danny, and Theresa - Illinois
Ed Sutter - Father of Mack and Bo - Northwestern
Danny Sutter - Northwestern
PJ Mangieri - Theresa Sutter’s son - Nebraska
Nick Mangieri - Theresa Sutter’s son - Indiana
Luke Mangieri - Theresa Sutter’s son - Baseball Bradley - then Minor League
Charlie Mangieri - Theresa’s son - Northwestern
Mack -
Bo -

BB was not contacted before Lovie was fired. A former U of I baseball player is actually the one who told Josh that Bret wanted the job. Not interested but wanted it. Bret had been eyeing this Job pretty much since he was let go at Ark. He already had a detailed plan put together for the Illinois job and how to turn it around before Josh even contacted him. Once Josh and Bret finally spoke it was Bret getting the job.

My immediate reaction was:

Ick. Huh. Maybe that actually makes a ton of sense.

Sure enough…

Maybe this isn't true....just have a gut feeling better about Sutter than Anderson rn.

I think the brother factor could be big (I hope it is) and from following recruiting over the years, usually when you cancel OVs after completing a OV, that usually says alot. Also got the 247 reports. Maybe just me 🤷‍♀️
This was somewhat valid to begin with, but him stopping by to visit IL today completely suggests otherwise. I'd very much bet we're heavily involved with both TE.

Comes down to decision day... zero doubt staff has put in the work.

geez, why would Anderson visit campus every month if he was not likely to commit .

I know nothing , really , other than I feel real good about landing both

if for some reason we don’t get one or the other , it’s not because the staff didnt try hard enough .

And Sutter and Anderson talking with each other regularly too.
