sounds pretty good ($):
cause you know it's true. he's exuding confidence, for good reason
I know I'm probably putting too much weight on the value of a 3rd yr quarterback, but I sure think Luke is going to be a huge advantage for us this year. I'm envisioning him picking apart defenses with confidence. If you had two teams playing each other that were identical in every way but one had the Luke of two yrs ago at QB and the other had the Luke of this fall at QB, I think this Luke would eat 'em up!

Not to go down this rabbit hole again, but - best running back in the country, Big Ten's leader in receptions at WR, a QB that's started numerous games in the NFL, the best defense in the country stacked with NFL draft picks left and right. Doesn't happen very often, especially at Illinois.

Really sucks how that year ended, but we’ve improved drastically in terms of late game execution in close games.
Depth was a question mark. In terms of the top string of guys it was as good as any Illinois team I've seen.

Last season, and maybe this season may lend better results, but that was the most talented team.

Yeah, to be clear I also predict a loss to USC, Wisconsin or a team below that this year in my predictions, and I have us going 9-3. So, I certainly agree with you, and it was more of a case of it being difficult to word that, haha. What I was really trying to say is that if we lose said head-scratcher AND lose the "tough games" above that, it would likely indicate we are overhyped, as we would be in 7-5 territory.

But again, I definitely agree that a loss in that tier in and of itself isn't some huge deal ... assuming we can make it up with a win in one of our big road games. If you'll notice the following trend, I practically GUARANTEE that we will have a head-scratching (and/or otherwise disappointing) result mid-season, even if we end up winning it, lol...

2021
10/23 - Win at #7 Penn State to regain some valuable momentum.
---> 10/30 - Lose vs. a 3-4 Rutgers team to zap the momentum away, lol.

2022
10/29 - Win at Nebraska to improve to 7-1 and earn a #16 ranking.
---> 11/5 - Lose vs. a 3-4 Michigan State team on Dads Day in front of our biggest crowd in like 8 years.

2023
10/14 - Win at 5-1 Maryland to seemingly get our season back on track.
---> 10/21 - Lose vs. Wisconsin on Homecoming, blowing a 2-touchdown lead in the second half.

2024
10/19 - Win vs. #24 Michigan on a literally PERFECT, sellout afternoon on national TV.
[Skip obvious loss at #1 Oregon]
---> Lose vs. unranked Minnesota to extend our losing streak to 2 and drop out of the top 25.

The difference last year, of course, is that there were no more disappointments ... we rested up for a bye week, dominated MSU at home, had the thrilling comeback win at Rutgers, handily beat Northwestern at Wrigley and rounded out a 4-game winning streak to end the year by beating #15 South Carolina (one of the hottest teams in the nation) in the Citrus Bowl. Let's hope that momentum carries over seamlessly!!
I’ve been chalking up the illini over the Trojans, but agree (emotionally prepared?) that they’ll drop one that they shouldn’t on paper. Hope not, but we’ll see.

lot gets made of AHen's year 1 struggles, not sure Lunney had the greatest of moments in his first year here either.

This doesn't make any predictions, I'm just thrilled by how much we're seeing the Illini in positive articles and interviews this off season. It is new territory and remarkable. Our schedule looks more and more favorable every time I look at it. Also, poor Purdue:

we would've been in the playoffs last year if three things happened: Illinois beat Minnesota, Michigan beat Indiana, Duke could make a 30 yard GWFG against SMU.

This was every Tim Beckman post-game press conference.

"We would have won that game if we didn't throw that pick-6 to start the second quarter, if we didn't blow coverage that led to them converting a 3rd-and-17 leading to a touchdown, and if we would have returned the punt as time expired".

Tell me you haven't watched Illinois football for the last forty years without telling me you haven't watched Illinois football for the last forty years.
This is a new day. We bring back the best OL in the conference, the best QB and we replenished the WR room. Our defense will be better than last year. I think we win can go undefeated. OSU is at home and possibly Washington on the road will be tough but not impossible to win. Indiana? Duke? USC, sorry, they do not stack up.

This reads like a typical Kansas Jayhawks football fan, circa 2024.

Have we landed an outstanding tackle from Monticello named Mason High? He played in the Illinois Shriner all-star game at IWU's Tucci Stadium last week.

The 2024 Jayhawks are the EXACT reason I'm not on this "we're going 10-2" hype train lol we were a couple close games from 6-6 last year. Now I DO think Bielema is a difference in those close games and I'm hopeful we continue to win them. But looking back, we very nearly lost to Purdue, Rutgers and Nebraska last year. Totally different story if we don't win those.

2024 Nebraska would also qualify. They had it very penciled in they were starting the year 7-0 before a game vs OSU.

Comments like the bolded have been of such haunting I'm not even sure I have a wish to face them. And you'd have to be clueless if you think we're going to run through all three of those games without breaking a stride, like a walk in the park.
