This is what bothers me the most. He's probably the best coach OK State has ever had. Yes they've had guys that went on to better things, but at OK State, I think it is Gundy. If you're going to move on, I think he's earned better.

That's where I think it matters what's going on behind the scenes. Did the AD push him to retire during the offseason, and Gundy asked for one more chance and see how the new season goes (which obviously has not gone well)? is it obvious that he's not working with donors on NIL or transfer portal etc in the new world? I'm not saying it's any of those things, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it things like that, and can't really jump to conclusions otherwise.

I sure as heck don't think you fire your coach of 21 years 3 games into the season. What is the benefit of that? Showing you're super mad? You're not getting a new coach for next week.

The new transfer portal timeframe likely feeds into this rash of early season firings. With the portal open for such a short time immediately after the season, schools can’t afford to be in the process of hiring a coach at that time —they need that new coach in place and ready to hit the road recruiting. You can’t do that if you wait until the end of the season to fire the current coach.

Is it better to be trashed in the media every week while everyone looks at you like a dead man walking? I'm not so sure. He can go spend the winter playing golf somewhere warm where no one knows who he is.

He's got a big personality, maybe he can get a gig in the media. Who doesn't want to see Mike Gundy's "Man of the Week" segment?

I agree with a lot of this, except the last part. Not sure what it even means to get an "early start."
back channeling the contact with agents happens all the time in thew search for a new coach. Gundy earned the respect to not have that done while still on the sideline.

Letting him go now, before the official search for the new coach begins, was the right thing to do, rather than letting him twist in the wind and hearing rumors for the next 8 weeks he was getting canned the Sat after Thanskgiving

I can't see Odom jumping ship from Purdue to go to Oklahoma State with their financial questions and leadership in-transition. If he did, that would be a serious indictment on Purdue.
All true. But 3rd best in Indiana? Narrow path to winning the B1G.... Compared to the Big 12 that has quite a bit more parody with the absence of a blue bloods.

You're still right about financial backing, leadership, and being outside the P2. Just another spin on the situation

Is canning the guy really more respectful than calling him into the office, telling him he's not going to be retained after this season but you'll let him finish out the season, and he can have a great send off at the conclusion of the season to celebrate a stellar career, and then proceeding to back channel whoever you want?

Didn't they move the portal to January?

believe me , he was told a month ago what the deal was and losing to Tulsa made the AD’s phone light up all weekend .

it was done in a proper way. my son is an alum from there and has contacts with people there

letting him go now was the best thing for everyone .

my lord stop pretending you have all the answers .
are you Chief Gritty or his brother ?

This is pretty crazy. The guy has been their coach for 21 years. His overall record is 170-90, he has only had 2 losing seasons in 20 seasons, and one of those was his 1st season. 18 bowl appearances, 12 bowl wins, ended 11 seasons ranked in the top 25, with the most recent being #16 just 2 seasons ago, he was #7 4 seasons ago. He's looking to perhaps for only the 2nd time in 2 decades have back-to-back losing seasons and they fire him 3 games into a season.

People love to rip on those evil coaches who are, but this is BS. He lost to a top 10 team and had a bad loss and they said that's it, he's done. That's insane. I don't fault a coach at all to get whatever they can in this day and age, because the sports world is absolutely crazy.
1- If you're going to be controversial, you better win...Dude had to film an apology video in the last 2 years...

2- And, OSU is 1-11 his last 12 games. Tough to say it's just losing to Oregon.

3- You don't make a HUGE deal about haves and have nots...only to lose a game you paid your opponent 300k to show up.

4- Harbo & Meyer are media darlings but problematic, who was the last coach to be as big of a jerk and win a championship? Dabo? He's also flailing. Being a dick does not pay in college football anymore and his keystone moment was doing so in a admittedly hilarious way.

Wow sorry, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings with my opinion on Mike Gundy of all things.

Hey everyone, time to stop talking about Mike Gundy! The guy whose kid went to Oklahoma St. has spoken, and no other opinions are necessary or appropriate!

I’m sure that if Mike Gundy has any hard feelings, the buyout he’s receiving will soothe them.

At the risk of offering an opinion that will offend someone, I think he kind of got screwed there as well. After last season they restructured his deal to reduce both his salary and the buyout he would be due if he was fired. His buyout is $15 million - if he hadn't agreed to the restructure it would have been $25 million. I think he agreed to that in order to get time to right the ship. Apparently it only bought him 3 games. Essentially, he paid the Oklahoma St. Athletic Department $10 million for the privilege of coaching 3 additional games. He should fire his agent (In my opinion. This is all my opinion. I don't claim to know for a fact that Mike Gundy should fire his agent).
