If OSU has a 50:50 chance of stumbling and Illini a 50:50 chance of a monster game, our odds of winning are 25%. And of course 60:40 odds yields 16% chance of a win. So 16-25%. Sounds good to me.
Where in all this magic math does it say the odds of the #1 team in the country 'stumbling' are 50%? I guess it depends on how you define that word.

I did see the 18% published a couple days ago by someone, seems high to me but there's always hope.

Trip down memory lane! Top 5 teams coming to Champaign since 1980, which is is clearly a rare and special occasion!

2017 - L 10-24 vs. #5 Wisconsin
2015 - L 3-28 vs. #3 Ohio State
2013 - L 35-60 vs. #3 Ohio State
2010 - L 13-24 vs. #2 Ohio State

2007 - W 31-26 vs. #5 Wisconsin
2006 - L 10-17 vs. #1 Ohio State
2002 - L 16-23 (OT) vs. #2 Ohio State
1999 - L 7-27 vs. #2 Penn State
1998 - L 0-41 vs. #1 Ohio State
1997 - L 6-41 vs. #2 Penn State
1996 - L 0-48 vs. #2 Ohio State
1994 - L 31-35 vs. #2 Penn State
1993 - L 12-20 vs. #6 Ohio State
1991 - L 0-20 vs. #4 Michigan (ILL #25)
1989 - L 10-24 vs. #3 Michigan (ILL #8)

1985 - T 3-3 vs. #4 Michigan
1985 - W 31-28 vs. #5 Ohio State
1983 - W 33-0 vs. #4 Iowa

1982 - L 3-20 vs. #3 Pitt (ILL #19)

So this will be the first time we have hosted a top 5 team at home since 2017, the first time we have hosted the #1 team since 2006 and the first time we have hosted a top 5 team AS a ranked team since 1991 ... this is a big frickin' deal, and I pray we rise to the occasion. It cannot be overstated just how emphatically meaningful a strong performance by our Illini - much less a win - would be for the continued momentum of this program!

1. Need best game of season by defense. Don't give up big plays. Force some turnovers. Keep OSU at 20 pts or less.
2. Need great game by offense. No turnovers. Give Luke time to pass. Score +21 pts.
3. Crazy loud Illini crowd energizes Illini
4. Best case scenario - Illini field goal for the win.

The old saying should apply on this thread--if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

what a novel approach......having reporters use a microphone when asking questions.......wonder if we can ever aspire to have that at BB , BU or SG's pressers ?
And look how much better that Day presser looks than recent Bret pressers. Blinding light where he is squinting his eyes and where you can see every whisker on his face it’s so bright. Or loud overpowering music from next room over.

Nothing says either team has those 50:50 odds of bad or great performance. Stumbling or not isn’t a binary thing. Neither is having a great game. Both occur on a continuum.

I’m just offering a mathematical rationale for what folks were suggesting, i.e. 15-25% odds of a win. It’s very plausible. Great teams stumble (relatively) all the time, allowing weak ones to beat them with better than expected performance. Every weekend offers many such examples. We might serve one up Saturday..

My gut says we have 20% chance of a win, 60% chance of a “competitive loss”, and 20% chance of an uglier loss. Should be a great gameday overall . . . weather, atmosphere, and a reasonable shot at upsetting OSU.

If you want a snooze fest, sure. The war chant on third down was the worst part of the iconic Chief symbology.

Wasn’t loud.
Wasn’t intimidating.
Looked stupid.

In my 22 years of season ticket holding, that’s the #2 thing I’m happy is gone.
100%. The War Chant would take the crowd noise away. It had its place but creating noise and excitement was not it.

We need to employ that 8 man offensive line run game. Control the clock is our only chance. But that chance is remote. Osu looked so good against minny.

And since then we’ve had 0 identity. At least we have the William tell overture /s. The western Michigan game was dull, dreary, and quiet for a sold out crowd, because it took forever for the team to give us something to be amped about. Additionally, we don’t have much of anything anymore that’s uniquely us. The music, the war chant, would certainly inspire me more as a fan compared to our current approach of filling the void with what feels like placeholders for a long time now.

A bit out of character for me when facing a 14.5 pt spread, but I think it's finally time to establish our new program "high mark" in terms of Greatest Illini Wins Ever.

32 ILLINI
31 OSU

We score late with ~30 seconds left on the clock; then go for 2 pts, and make it! A final OSU drive fizzles out at the 50 yard line as time expires. Keys to success?
(a) We pass often and successfully to set up the run. Think Dave Wilson vs. OSU in 1981 (b) Luke suffers his first interception of the year but we win the turnover battle 1:2 (c) admittedly stolen from Jeremy Werner, but our TE's and RB's combine for 7 important pass receptions

[SEASON TO DATE: 5-1 predicting the winner (USC was my miss); 2-4 vs the spread]

As we all said a lot depends on our slowing them down and time of possession, Altmyer having the time to throw and winning the turnover battle. I think you’ll see a very controlled quick short route passing game which hopefully opens up the run a bit. Long drives capped by TDs is the hope.

Like others have said the war chant was the most annoying tradition related to the Chief and the thing I miss the least. Never timed well with the play.

Give Luke a pocket and he can pick apart any defense.
