Is this a game we dial up more blitzes to pressure a young QB?
No.

Sayin has a 78% completion % against the blitz. Against Minn he went 7/8, 124 yds, 2TD against their blitz.

Sending extra defenders at him is just going to open up the field more for him and allow him to pick us apart. We need to be able to pressure him without relying on blitzes.

So it's interesting, because I don't necessarily think Sayin is simply really good against the blitz, I think the issue is he has a fantastic line, where if you blitz, you still aren't putting pressure on him and at the same time either having gaping holes in your zone or letting someone try covering their WRs in man.

So I think you're both right in a way, the key on defense is to get pressure on Sayin and stop the run. You hope and pray you can do it with a 4 man rush and Jacas just has one of those Senior All-American moments. But if you need to blitz to do it, then you better disguise it well and you better get in his face and either drop him or make him feel the hit.

A jittery Sayin is our best chance of pulling the upset. Gotta get his jersey dirty. But if you can't get there when you blitz, don't

Have you seen their receivers? More blitzes equal less defenders in coverage if you don't get home and we have shown no ability to do that. We blitzed right before the half at Purdue and it went for a 60 yard TD.

OSU is going to score. Accept that. They key is keeping everything in front and eliminate the huge plays. If they score a TD, make it take 5 to 6 minutes. The ONLY way we're in the game at the end is to keep that clock moving and shorten it.

If they start getting 30, 40, 50 yard chunk plays....the game will be over by halftime. That's the risk you run when you aren't EXTREMELY choosy for when you bring an extra guy. People were pissed with Henry, but he knows this. His ability to shut OSU down isn't going to happen. His ability to slow them down is doable. They're going to give up 30. Just can't it happen before halftime. That really does need to be the goal.

We don't have an advantage with any unit grouping on the field. Not one.

Shorten the game, run the ball and try to be in it at the end.

Sorry, something similar may have been mentioned before -

No matter what my Magic 8 Ball predicted yesterday - "highly doubtful" Illinois will beat The OSU - Illinois has real chance for another huge upset. Beat #1 Ohio State in 2007 in Columbus. Now Champaign.

Can do.

I've been watching the OSU talking head "podcasts" throughout the day. They're extremely confident. (Well-earned. I get it. But still, they're jerks. I'm starting to think Bret should encourage some of our guys to just stay home and avoid the embarrassment. Sounds like a resounding OSU victory according to these guys.)

One group of three dudes is expecting 25% OSU fans in the stands. Whether it's actually 1% or 15%, I'm thinking our ORANGE OUT will blend their red in with our sea of orange!

Let's keep this simple: Bury them. Just bury them. No more, no less.

Kansas fans also thought they’d have 25% of the crowd since “Illinois never sells out” … it was closer to 10-15% at most, IIRC. OSU will travel well like they already do, but it’s a new day in Champaign. I’d be shocked at 25%.

I have performed the Three-in-One dozens of times since the 80s as a MI and Alumni Band member. I've watched it from the stands even more times since graduating. It saddens me to say this, but without The Chief, IMO it is nothing special.
You need to use your imagination

I agree, blitzing is not a good strategy against Sayin. I want Gabe moving all across the line to give the line a different look. Teams have been double teaming him but if he moves before the snap, it will confuse their blocking as they expect him to be here but instead he is there. We need to constantly rush 4. Let the other 7 drop into coverage on pass plays. This rushing 3 will not get the job done. Never been a fan of the 3-4 unless you have 4 outstanding LBs like the Saints and Giants back in the 80s.

After about 3 hours of watching the media''s constant gushing over osu's D as the second coming of the Steelers Steel Curtain D
I realized any further research would just be redundant and not worth wasting my time on it...........many spin doctors thought our goal should NOT be on winning the game but our goal should be the first team this year to score more than 10 points on the bucknuts vaulted defense which is a 3 deep depth chart of wooly mammoths spitting venom out of every bodily orifice with arms and legs capable of crushing normal human bodies at will........

I got the old 98 pound weakling commercials spinning in my mind till I had to lay down and cry myself into a stupor........there could be some embellishment going on with that last statement but I blame some of that on my normal wake and bake habit.......

the general consensus of opinions is we have a very small chance of victory.........maybe should forfeit to avoid any life threatening injuries of our beloved Illini players.........it could be a more massive beatdown that what happened in loosierland a few weeks ago.............

well , well , well..............pretty bleak outlook on our game Saturday , huh ?.....................But that's not how I look at it and hope that's not how Illini Nation looks at it.........we have an OPPORTUNITY , as coach BB says , of scaling any mountain in our path as long as we rise to the level of our competition and play error free football..........zero turnovers , pick up that blitzing defender and believe more than ever that you , we and all of us can win this game and keep the faith on our 1st CFP appearance later on this season.......

with much consideration and herbal infusion I predict.............................

Illini 27
osu 24

Mr. Olano with another time expiring FG to gain the victory for all of us to enjoy and celebrate.....it can happen....
it really really can.............................

just.believe,

What I want from this game at least is a challenge; I don't wanna get blown out. Also, let's come out on the other side with no serioua injuries. Looking at the rest of the schedule, we could very well go 10-2.

It’s a 50/50 chance because we either win, or we lose. Those are the possible outcomes
In the original British version of Fever Pitch, Colin Firth plays an Arsenal-crazed middle school teacher/soccer coach consoling a kid after a game where he missed a big penalty kick:

"Would you have rather made that penalty or have Arsenal win two-nil at Anfield tomorrow?"

"Two-nil at Anfield."

"Well, there you go. And now you've done your part."

Amazingly, I had the same exact dream —- although mine was a nightmare, because we were down 8 pts at the time of said “flip”.
(I suppose that still might be the right call, if our chances of making the TD and two point conversion are better than our chances of preventing them from getting a field goal in the time remaining.)

Here’s the thing everyone else seems to be ignoring: when’s the last time we were disappointed in our performance against a Purdue team?

Last year, right before the Michigan game.

When’s the last time we played the defending national champ at home?

Last year, against Michigan.

When’s the last time we were 5-1?

Last year, going into the Michigan game.

AND WHAT HAPPENED AFTER WE HAD A BAD OUTPUT AGAINST PURDUE LAST YEAR?

We won the next week!

AND WHAT HAPPENED WHEN WE PLAYED THE DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS AT OUR PLACE?

We beat them at our place!

AND WHAT IS OUR RECORD GOING INTO THIS GAME?

5-1, just like last year!

AND WHAT’S IT GONNA BE AFTER THIS GAME?!

Same as last year. 6-1! Book it.

I also read somewhere that Florida State's deal (which some feel is the best in college football) was based on our chief, but with a wilder, more warlike take.
(And yes, the NCAA was fine with that.).
