You must be new here lol
He wins and no one will say a thing.
Or its smarter in the NIL era to look for 100-150 kids who might stay a couple extra years. Who knows though, still a few years from seeing what actually works.I’ll say this: being beholden to high school kids outside the top 20ish doesn’t seem like a good idea moving forward.
I do, I have a difficult time connecting with an entire team from Europe. It seems that's us, moving forward. I can't believe we have 2 kids Hamer recruited from Rolla, Mo. And Iowa, that Illinois State wouldn't recruit. The 1 ranked player in Illinois we've forgotten about and the Pt. Guard from Whitney Young is gonna be a baller for Tennessee. We shall see, but I'm not excited about recruiting and roster construction every single year. Underwood may love it, but without a culture, we aren't going anywhere. Building a culture/ identity is huge. It cannot be done in 3 months. Rick Barners, Matt Painter, have a solid roster and get 3 or 4 transfers is about right.
You're overreacting.Underwood is beginning to burn American recruits.. this won't end well unless he wins a natty with European players....
His quotes, his roster, etc.. There has yet to be an Illini coach who has been successful with out a Chicago born player on the roaster.. .TSJ being the most recent with E8.
Not uneasy yet.. but I have to be honest.. that thought is starting to creep in.. I guess we will see this season.. He wins and no one will say a thing.
To be honest, I’m speculating not speaking in recruiting facts. But the biggest quote of his that stood out from BIG media day was “They care more.” When he was discussing why his pivot to European players. As a previous high school basketball player myself, it was hard not to feel some type away about it.please tell us uninformed folk why Jervis dropped us
Definitely dont feel that way with the way it ended with morez i mean the kid was committed as a sophomore in high school and still jumped ship and ran our names through the mud in the process.theres no loyalty in college sports nowadays dont matter if your a top 50 recruit or outside the top 250 if they produce they want to be paid.i do agree if you got them in your program it should be a upper hand but when players sign nil deals and leave within weeks to other schools it hard to know what's really going on behind the seensI think their is an element that people have forgot about recruiting the top 40 types.
Regardless of how hard it feels to retain them from year 1 to 2. It's still a hell of a lot cheaper to retain your own players than to get them out of the portal. It's also significantly easier to retain a player already on roster.
I know it doesn't FEEL that way cause of guys like Morez or others we have seen walk.
Top 40 Freshmen also make up the heavy majority of draft picks who. So if continuing to put people in the league is a goal...
Morez sure. But how many Top 40 returners left their original team? I'd bet the overwhelming majority stayed.Definitely dont feel that way with the way it ended with morez i mean the kid was committed as a sophomore in high school and still jumped ship and ran our names through the mud in the process.theres no loyalty in college sports nowadays dont matter if your a top 50 recruit or outside the top 250 if they produce they want to be paid.i do agree if you got them in your program it should be a upper hand but when players sign nil deals and leave within weeks to other schools it hard to know what's really going on behind the seens

Because I was curious, here's the breakdown:Yes, I knew this was VERY incorrect, so I had to go look for myself...
Rankings: 247 rankings 2024
Of the top 40 players in these rankings, only 13!!!!! are still at the same school they played at last year (many had 1 'meh' season and went pro, but the vast majority that stayed in college have xferred to a new school)
Agree many of those players think they are one and done. If they aren't, then it must be someone else's fault.Yes, I knew this was VERY incorrect, so I had to go look for myself...

But only 25% went to a new school.Yup, so if you recruited a top 40 player last year there is a 70 percent chance you’re replacing them this offfseason.
No Chicago born players on the roster? Is Blake Fagbemi chopped liver? How about Jason Jakstys (Yorkville is close enough)? Next question please!Underwood is beginning to burn American recruits.. this won't end well unless he wins a natty with European players....

How many times have we put all our eggs in the Illinois basket and been burned, left with some char and the stench of sulfur?Underwood is beginning to burn American recruits.. this won't end well unless he wins a natty with European players....

How many had coaching changes or went Pro? Literally the entire top 10 went pro with I believe 1 exceptionYes, I knew this was VERY incorrect, so I had to go look for myself...
