I do, I have a difficult time connecting with an entire team from Europe. It seems that's us, moving forward. I can't believe we have 2 kids Hamer recruited from Rolla, Mo. And Iowa, that Illinois State wouldn't recruit. The 1 ranked player in Illinois we've forgotten about and the Pt. Guard from Whitney Young is gonna be a baller for Tennessee. We shall see, but I'm not excited about recruiting and roster construction every single year. Underwood may love it, but without a culture, we aren't going anywhere. Building a culture/ identity is huge. It cannot be done in 3 months. Rick Barners, Matt Painter, have a solid roster and get 3 or 4 transfers is about right.

This is too bad...but as a fellow Illini instead of trying to argue with you...I would just encourage you to watch (rewatch?) the media day interviews and the Every Day Guy videos.

In those videos the Euros literally talk about our culture and it being part of the reason they are here. We also have a pretty good history with international players.

They deserve your fandom. They are great kids (adults) and I am super excited to watch all of them develop and meld into an awesome team we all fall in love with!

Underwood is beginning to burn American recruits.. this won't end well unless he wins a natty with European players....

His quotes, his roster, etc.. There has yet to be an Illini coach who has been successful with out a Chicago born player on the roaster.. .TSJ being the most recent with E8.

Not uneasy yet.. but I have to be honest.. that thought is starting to creep in.. I guess we will see this season.. He wins and no one will say a thing.
You're overreacting.

4/15 roster spots are international players. There are plenty of American recruits on the roster. Boswell grew up in Champaign which isn't Chicago but is actually much more local to Illinois than Chicago. And we do actually have a Chicago born player on the roster, anyway, so there's that (AJ Redd).

please tell us uninformed folk why Jervis dropped us
To be honest, I’m speculating not speaking in recruiting facts. But the biggest quote of his that stood out from BIG media day was “They care more.” When he was discussing why his pivot to European players. As a previous high school basketball player myself, it was hard not to feel some type away about it.

I mean, what does he really mean?

Are we going to act like Brad isn’t taking shots at USA highschool basketball players and development? No way that isn’t going to be used against him when it comes to state side recruiting..

Or am I really just seeing it that wrong ?

Again, he wins, no will say anything… but if this team loses , doesn’t make it past round of 64. It will get loud IMHO

I think their is an element that people have forgot about recruiting the top 40 types.

Regardless of how hard it feels to retain them from year 1 to 2. It's still a hell of a lot cheaper to retain your own players than to get them out of the portal. It's also significantly easier to retain a player already on roster.

I know it doesn't FEEL that way cause of guys like Morez or others we have seen walk.

Top 40 Freshmen also make up the heavy majority of draft picks who. So if continuing to put people in the league is a goal...
Definitely dont feel that way with the way it ended with morez i mean the kid was committed as a sophomore in high school and still jumped ship and ran our names through the mud in the process.theres no loyalty in college sports nowadays dont matter if your a top 50 recruit or outside the top 250 if they produce they want to be paid.i do agree if you got them in your program it should be a upper hand but when players sign nil deals and leave within weeks to other schools it hard to know what's really going on behind the seens

Morez sure. But how many Top 40 returners left their original team? I'd bet the overwhelming majority stayed.

Yes, I knew this was VERY incorrect, so I had to go look for myself...

Rankings: 247 rankings 2024

Of the top 40 players in these rankings, only 13!!!!! are still at the same school they played at last year (many had 1 'meh' season and went pro, but the vast majority that stayed in college have xferred to a new school)
Because I was curious, here's the breakdown:

17 went pro
13 stayed at same school
10 transferred

Agree many of those players think they are one and done. If they aren't, then it must be someone else's fault.

Yup, so if you recruited a top 40 player last year there is a 70 percent chance you’re replacing them this offfseason.

No Chicago born players on the roster? Is Blake Fagbemi chopped liver? How about Jason Jakstys (Yorkville is close enough)? Next question please!

Here is what you wrote. How do you get "vast majority" from 13 staying and 10 transferring? I'm not even sure what your point is or what the point of other posters is. But if we could debate the point using actual facts, that would be helpful.

How many times have we put all our eggs in the Illinois basket and been burned, left with some char and the stench of sulfur?

How many houses had internal plumbing before sewer systems and water pumping stations were created? You get with the times or you get passed.

Our money is being spent well.
- talent evaluators
- talent maximizers
- talent that plays to win

Try playing ball on both sides of the pond and see how bad you get spanked if your name isn't MJ, Magic, Barkley, or another (beyond) Elite talent.

Like I tell my kids. Bust your butts. Take nothing for granted. Someone is always looking to eat your lunch (or milkshake). Might be good for USA ballers to pay attention

How many had coaching changes or went Pro? Literally the entire top 10 went pro with I believe 1 exception

Holy crap....I was right....crazy

And out of the transfers....how many had a coaching change which we generally associate with the old school transfer system where that was okay when leadership changed
