We were talking about this exact thing leaving the game.Definitely not good. I like scheduling them but I would also like to see us win more than 1 lol
It's higher stakes, brighter lights. Way, way easier in a blowout home game against FGCU/Colgate than on national TV against Alabama.Yea but was it a problem when they shot 88% and 87% from the line against FGCU and Colgate. So think they did ok in that department while crushing the other cupcakes. There is an inconsistency there but this is not a game to game problem.
He was the best player for the first 10 minutes of the game, but after the he was not good whatever. He looked extremely slow, unaware and confused, BUT he's a freshman. That's what happens. I know he played in Europe, but not against this competition, not in front of 17,000+ fans and not on national TV. He got some shots, then got overwhelmed, which is expected. We're going to have to see, as time goes on, if his lack of athleticism can be masked by the grit/toughness aspect of his game. That, he can control.the Mirk takes are a bit much tonight. He nearly had a double double in the first half again. Yea he disappeared in the second and made some boneheaded plays which I’m sure Brad will get all over him for but for a period in that game he was the best player out there.
As much as we focus on the free throws, which we absolutely should in this particular game, the fact of the matter is that when we NEEDED to string together stops, we couldn't. We knew this team was going to struggle defensively before the season started, but now it's here and it hit us in the face.Free throw shooting and three point shooting are the weaknesses I see.
Ben from 3 tonight - 3/8 (37.5% - LOL)Tough game but Z is 40+% from 3 this year and 38% in his HM career.
37.5 is great if he's shooting that consistently and on contested shots. I'm sure they track it somewhere on the internets, but by the eye test Ben misses a sad amount of catch and shoot lightly contested 3s...that you expect a higher rate on.
I think Oats was very happy to let him have those.
This...Also gotta point out that Mirkovic has a rough shooting night but still had 10/10 with 4 assist, 3 steals, 1 block, and only 1 turnover. Kid is a stud.
I'm surprised the 23-24 team was that mediocre. Domask was lights out from the line and I was always confident in Shannon.I've always wondered why Underwood teams with such strong shooters were so lackluster at FT over the years
24-25: .790 (31st)
23-24: .736 (101st)
22-23: .679 (310th)
21-22: .706 (211th)
20-21: .728 (111th)
etc
I know they weren't graded very well but I think that team was actually capable of being good defensively when they wanted to be.I struggle with the "toughness" stuff. Not because of you, just because I hear it all the time. Between "toughness" and "adjustments", I wonder how many more times I can hear it LOL.
And this is NO TJ slander, he's my all time favorite Illini. But if defense is a metric for toughness, that Illinois team was one of the worst defensively in the underwood era - and I know those dudes were tough.
Rinse, repeat.Free throw shooting and three point shooting are the weaknesses I see.
Yep I agree. This team looked soft on boards tonight and out hustled13-22 FTs
Rebounds 35-33 Bama
That’s the ball game
Give me a break, Tomi is arguably our best playerThere was talk about how Z is the kinda player that can drive ya crazy at times (via Ark and UK fans)... i'm kinda verging on that area with Tomi tbh.
The three things I mentioned to friend as we texted during game. Despite the size and rebounding (in first half) advantage, Alabama played tougher, more physical and was more active. That lead to a 22-19 rebounding advantage for AL in second half. Add in 9 of 17 from FT line in second half and several mini streaks of bad offense (not to mention what I think was a nine minute scoreless streak in first half), and you have the makings of a loss.We cant play much worse in many key areas. If coaches can clean up toughness, free throw shooting, and cold spells, we're gonna be fine.
