To be fair … He was horrendous today …

But we aren’t paying him huge $$$ to sit …
0% you can allow a player play bad defense, not rebound, not pass, not play hard just because you are paying him.

Underwood is not going to allow a kid getting paid to allow him to play bad basketball. One example is Skyy Clark. He thought making money gave him privileges and Underwood sent him packing by Christmas.

1. I agree with this, however, we as fans are far too emotional over one game. If Brad is playing a deep rotation until something like mid-December in order to find the best 8-man rotation when everyone is healthy, that is the long game and I totally respect it.
2. As for lost - 100% … settling for our big men taking deep threes over and over again is ridiculous
I don't mind open threes from bigs at all, I like them but closer to the three point line not way beyond it.
I also think Jake needs to not be more than a couple minutes if at all as far as the rotation. Mihailo misses some shot but got guys a lot of good looks but guys were weak at the rim or failed to take advantage of the clean looks his vision, spoed and passing provides.
Really need last years Tomi back. I like the 8 or 9 man rotation going forward. We can make shots from three that Kylan and Mihailo opened up and we didn't today. I am confident we will most nights.

I am sure Tyler is just slow playing our "real" offense that he is going to roll out later in the season.

Tis the season …

C’mon, Illini! Just give me 2 guys each game that are shooting well. Just 2 out of the 10 guys. That shouldn’t be an impossible task.

I'm sorry but Mirk shouldn't be attempting 10 three pointers, that's not his game. Whether it's his inexperience/immaturity as a freshman or the coaching staff allowing him to take that many threes either way it can't happen.

10? He missed 4 in the first half and stopped shooting them

It's not a strength though, I agree... he's got to lay off them if they aren't going down... which he did

I know these games are supposed to prepare us for the tournament but they so often turn into these sh** shows I don’t know what good this does

Is the team feeling any better about themselves? or will they handle it better next time?

If you aren’t going to prepare your team for the other teams plays and you aren’t going to have anything to go to on offense other than Kylan just go create a bucket - then why play this game? One team was prepared and one team was on Thanksgiving break. If you want to take the team on a vacation to NY, just call it that and don’t play a game, all you do is destroy the teams confidence with games like this. The Duke game last year didn’t help anything either. Just stop it unless you are going to take the game seriously from a coaching perspective
100% this. Many of us knew the Duke game would go badly last year but had no idea we’d lose by 43 and take the worst loss in program history. These are nationally televised games with a lot of media, NBA scouts, and recruits watching. They’re also opportunities to gain national respect and prove we belong among the elite…so why TF are we not showing up prepared and like junkyard dogs…IDK.

So if you're here for Ben Humrichous' feelings, move on to the next post. This is basketball.

He and Jake are MVC, Ohio Valley, Big South Conference players. Period. Full stop. That's just who they are. The ONLY reason they should ever see minutes in a game like this are hitting open 3 point shots (because they can't create their own) and mop up. Ben is a passable 3pt shooter. We have enough evidence at this point at this level.
For all the talk of Ben's offseason conditioning and improvements, he had 1 rebound in 27 minutes of basketball. All 6'9" 240 lbs of pure Fletch forward.

One rebound.

They have absolutely no business playing over Mirk, Wagler, Petro, and Andrej, unless serious foul trouble, sending a message for 3 or 4 minutes, or injury dictates it.

They work hard, they are great teammates and great people. They do not belong on the floor for extended minutes at this level of competition.

Top 10 teams are difficult to win against

Duke is 3-5 against top 10 teams over the same time period, for instance

One might say: so we’ve won twice as many top 10 games as Duke in that time frame. And acknowledge that few teams are going to have a winning record when playing that many top 10 teams. Or we could make ourselves miserable because deep down that’s what some of you want to do.

Bottom line, if Whitman talk about how we compete for national championships, there was no reason to extend Brad 10 years this off-season so prematurely when he has consistently wet the bed against better coaching.

If I heard correctly:
The shot clock reset to 20 seconds on the prior shot, but it was over 20 and should not have dropped to 20. They decided to go back to THAT clock mistake, meaning the shot clock was two seconds too low for the next 20 seconds.
That, in turn, meant that when the clock went from 2 seconds to 20 seconds, on the SECOND clock error, it should have been at 4 seconds… allowing enough time for the miracle shot.

In other words, complete and total fairy tail to allow the shot to count.
I challenge that explanation. That was their third shot, and I recall that they bled the clock on the first shot. I'm willing to wager there was less than ten left on that when they took that first shot.

I don't know how much more open our guys want to be. They are put in great spots. Ben has really grown on me, but he clanked another wide open 3 down the stretch. Jake, great shooter, didn't receive the best pass, but you are here to shoot. Clank. Z missed. Tomi missed a big one. It was a bad pass from Bam, but top of key with time to gather. Gotta hit it.(tomi did bury one shortly after)

He didn’t go back in because Underwood was pissed at him for not playing hard

Time for these NIL collectors to grow up. That's the deal if you wanna get paid like a professional.

Stats are one thing, eye test is another. Ben played really good defense today, good on switches, contained dribble penetration even when switched onto guards, didnt allow open 3s.

Great job Boswell.
Good minutes from Brandon Lee.

Rest of the game was a complete dud. We’re going nowhere with an offense that settles for 3s out of our big guys.

UConn wasn’t very good today. But they ran smart offense. And we don’t. We just jack long distance slop from dudes that should be in the paint dominating.
It would be nice to see a back screen from our guys every now and then. UConn was terrible in the second half but they still got easy buckets with their actions. Game was over when we went 0-10 to start the second half.

Positives:

- 2nd half defense
- Kylan
- Lineup that had Z, Lee, and Ben. Kept us in distance at the end of the 2nd
- Kylan
- Free Throw Shooting was wonderful
- Kylan

Negatives:

- Mirk: Love the type of game he plays, but his immaturity showed today. Some of those 3s were just bad shot selection and he’s got to understand those breaks to not do it all himself
- Andrej: Looked like he didn’t want to be on the floor
- Wagler: Like Mirk, his immaturity showed today. Totally liability on defense. Don’t want to see him play significant minutes the rest of the year.
- Petrovic: Tried to do too much today. Needs to get better at finishing at the rim. Distribution was still good.
- Pick and Roll Offense: KICK IT TO TOMI WHEN HE’S OPEN

Put it behind us. Beat Tennessee. Just have to learn and move forward.
Thought this was a good analysis of today's game. They have more overall talent than we do but we were competitive in the game today and didn't give up particularly Boswell. On a good day we could beat them. Maybe we will get another chance at them in the Final Four.:)
