Think it's Vegas vs Utah.

If I had to venture a guess, Luke will play but Jacas won't. I base that purely off his post game interview comments yesterday and the feeling I got from it.

I'd sign up for that in a utter heartbeat.

Wouldn't the Reliaquest Bowl vs. Tennessee make the most sense in marketing a bowl game?

I'd say bonus points for us having our Top 10 Senior QB playing.

Am I missing something about us in the Reliaquest? How is that even possible?

I think Arizona would be a tough draw for the Illini. I watched the 2nd half of the Arizona vs. Arizona St. game Fri. night. I was impressed with the Arizona speed on both sides of the ball.

It's the 2nd B1G bid, and technically, we're tied for the 2nd-best record among regular bowl teams in the B1G. The tiebreakers that technically put Iowa ahead of us don't matter all that much anymore, and bids will generally get picked by avoiding certain matchups (no rematches) and by who would travel better to certain locations.

Not to mention, last year and in 2022, the bowl talk coming from within the program was far more accurate to where we ended up than most of the projections during this last week before Selection Sunday, and the talk seems to be leaning towards Tampa.

Bowl selections are not and never have been determined strictly by conference standings.
Correct. There is a pre-determined order that Bowls get to pick teams in and when it’s their turn, they get to pick any remaining team from the conference tie-ins to that Bowl.

From Wikipedia:

The contracts specify that the respective bowl committees receive a certain choice of teams. The selection order lists shown below (No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, etc.) indicate only the order in which the respective bowl committees make their selections. The choices are typically not predicated on end-of-season rankings or actually final regular season records/standings. For example, a bowl with the "# 3 pick" from a particular conference does not mean necessarily it has to select the "third place team" from that conference. When it becomes that committee's turn to pick, it may pick any of the remaining teams from that conference (with respect to the aforementioned eligibility rules detailed above).

A committee may select one team over another due to geographical proximity, travel ability for the fanbase, or other factors. Bowls may choose to "skip" teams in order to avoid regular season rematches, or perhaps bowl rematches from the previous season. In various cases, bowls have embraced a particular team(s) participating in same bowl in two consecutive seasons, but may shy away from inviting them for a third consecutive season. However, in most cases, the order loosely follows the general order of the regular season records/rankings.

What’s crazy is, we’ve made so few of them in my fan-life that I’ve just now started learning how Bowls work over the past 2-3 years.

Would a potential bowl host want assurances from us that Luke will play?

I'm sure it's something the bowl group will be examining, but not sure what assurances you can extract. It could be possible that Illinois provides Altmyer with another chunk of NIL to play through the bowl? His contract might already stipulate that.

This defense vs. Pavia with a Vandy bowl game?

I'd personally love getting Vegas. Would mean - almost certainly - it will be one of Arizona, Arizona State, Utah. The first two I think we would be favored, and the third may be unlikely we draw them.
