Uh, am I crazy in thinking this is pretty smart? The Cardinals got a $20 million deferral with 2% interest (below the inflation rate) and the remaining $30 million deferred with no interest rate. Unless the interest rate in greater than inflation, money now is always worth more than money later. And the Cardinals did this because they intended to compete in the short term when they got Arenado. How is this materially different than what the Dodgers did with Shohei that every Cards fan was like "hey, why don't we do stuff like that?"Don't forget the deferred money.

This kind of dumb financial engineering that I thought only the Nationals did. Cards will be paying $2m/year thru 2041.
Nolan was a great player. He is only 34. Nobody was expecting the last 2 years drop off. Going forward I get it.
I am reading on a few sites that Bloom and Marmol are in talks for an extension.
It is being reported in the St. Louis media that the Cardinals will be receiving revenue sharing this year for the first time. The program began in 1996.

Astros have won WS 2017, 2022 and lost WS 2019 2021. 4 appearances in last 10 years.
Cardinals last WS appearance was 2013 where they were swept by Red Sox. 0 appearances last 10 years.

Luhnow took on of worst teams in baseball and made it WS regular.
Mozeliak showed he was a figurehead. Once Luhnow was gone our drafting and development capability disappeared.

My Cardinals PTSD. 2013 we lost 4-2 to Red Sox. Jim Craig's career ruined. It was 2004 we were swept by Red Sox
Look up the Houston Astros payrolls for those years they made the WS. Other than 2017, they were always top 5 or close to it.
Also the value of the Cardinals org has appreciated immensely. They are in this to make money, not win games, and thet have been successful at that.

"They are in this to make money....." Mozeliak was extremely helpful from a financial point of view and at the same time he gave the illusion of fielding a competitive team until the last few years. In my view "not win games" is represented by the organization hiring Cardinal lifers as managers after the LaRussa era instead of going outside the organization. And by the way managers with no prior major league managerial experience.
Walker is still cheap next year, no reason to trade him at his lowest possible value.
Gorman is behind Donovan, Burleson, and (maybe) Nootbaar in trade value and will be cheaper than all of those guys next year, so really no reason to trade him either. And they'll need his infield innings if Donovan and Arenado are traded.
I really hate the tear the team down to the studs approach, especially with the top of the farm system looking pretty good, but I have a feeling DeWitt might have the inside track on knowing there will be a work stoppage in 2027 and they think they're too far away to compete in 2026 (which I disagree with, at least prior to the recent trades).

If they do like you suggest in the second paragraph. I do not want ownership to whine about declining attendance. I believe this is a coplete teardown. And I think this organization is years away from being a World Series contender.
I'm not going to judge until the off season is fully over. Current payroll is at $108MM, which includes Arenado and Contreras at $40MM total and the $20MM they're paying Boston for Gray.
I have a really hard time believing they're actually going to roll with a sub $100MM payroll with how much management derided attendance last year. Bloom said earlier in the off season if they traded the bigger contracts, they'd put most of that money into the 2026 team (they'll have to pay a lot to move Arenado but can probably get out of Contreras without paying).
They'll probably try to spend some money to buyout arb years for Winn or maybe Herrera, but I think they'll put some money into at least 2 rotation arms.
I am seeing some speculation in the sports media, and Marmol did not discout it that Victor Scott could be the Cardinal lead off man this year.

Could be our next Vince Coleman..major league OBP has been a work in progress, hovering around average (around .317 MLB average) as he adjusts, needing to consistently get on base more to fully leverage his elite speed, though he showed improvement with a 9.1% BB rate in 2025

If you are watching the 2026 Cardinals to see victories, you are going to have to find them in other places than runs scored versus that days opponent, but there is going to be a lot to watch for.
Victor Scott's growth should be really fun to watch. Masyn Winn will be fun to watch. Seeing J.J. Wetherholt get his MLB career started should be awesome to see. I will be interested to see these games, but I will also be keeping my eye toward Memphis and Springfield as well, as the majority of the guys that we hope will bring us back to prominence will be there.

Somebody on another sight tried to tell me that Vince Coleman also started slowly. I looked up both players first year stats, and Scott's stats pale in comparison. Vince Coleman had over 600 at bats in his first year: with I believe 170 hits: and a batting average of around .270 in I believe 151 games. Those stats are from memory. Some could be slightly wrong. Scott batted around .215 in 2025 with far fewer games, at bats, and hits. The latter stat in my view reflects the anemic offense that the Cardinals put on the field in 2025.
