If we’re voting between Minchey, Kienholz or Houser- I’d take Kienholz all day. The upside is high and he seems to have the talent to do everything we would want in our offense.

Houser would be a solid experienced guy to come in for a year, but you can’t expect him to put up the same numbers he did at ECU, which means we’d likely be taking a step back next year

Knew Olano was portaling as soon as I saw the on field interaction between he and BB after the bowl game. Sucks, but hopefully upcoming additions will make it sting less.

The NCAA has completely ruined its product. No turning back.

I second your nomination, while admittedly never having coached (nor evaluated) QB's in my life.

We need a guy that is good enough to keep us at 9 wins for a year or two. I'm not sure how much cash we have, but I'd rather splurge on QB as they can carry teams.

To have a salary cap, as some have suggested, you’d need to have a system where the athletes are employees with a collective bargaining agreement, which I’m in favor of. But it still wouldn’t stop the giant NIL bags because endorsement money — which is essentially what NIL is, in name anyway — cannot be restricted.

Let’s say Illinois offers Olano $1 million which is the salary cap in this hypothetical scenario. There would be nothing stopping, say Coca Cola, from offering him $5 million in endorsements should he happen to play for Georgia Tech for $750k salary. At which point, Twin City Radiator could fire back with $6 million in endorsements for him to stay in Champaign on top of the $1mil salary.

And this is why its harder and harder to continue enjoying sports at all levels. At the lower levels you have crazy/psycho parents constantly screaming at officials and coaching from the sidelines/stands. College is about the bag, no longer a degree or loyalty. Pros it seems more and more are rigged/directed by online betting/Vegas.

Can we just not have pure sports anymore?

On the Olano situation … Many pointed out that I was liking posts related to him transferring …

I wasn’t going to comment on the situation until after the bowl game and after Olano’s announcement … It was not a very well kept secret, but out of respect for who told me and them telling me not to comment on it, I haven’t …

The money that he is being offered from multiple CFP Teams is just too much to pass up on … We simply aren’t in a position to spend that much on a kicker … David understood … There’s no hard feelings …

Think for Bret it’s just frustrating that this is what the world has come to nowadays … In state kid who truly wants to be here but also has to weigh if he doesn’t make it to the NFL or an injury or some other crazy event … Then this is his last opportunity to truly cash in … And if someone is willing to triple or quadruple what you made this year, you have to consider it …

I'm sure it's frustrating for Bret, but the only reason we had 19 wins the past 2 seasons is Luke Altmyer who of course transferred in. It works both ways and we have benefited immensely from the portal.

I agree with your point and concern. However, in a CBA, any NIL/endorsement can be heavily regulated. It could be disallowed, It could be restricted. It could be limited.

Your point of a salary cap and an unregulated NIL is pointless in 100% correct. However, it won’t be that if a CBA happens. It will be heavily regulated.

I hate the transfer portal and NIL as a fan of sports, but I love it for the athletes as someone who strongly believes exceptional performance warrants exceptional compensation.

agree

there are ways to regulate this properly and fairly - its just that all parties need to agree going in
its done all the time in the real world.

easy to do? no but not impossible

But what is regulated? In professional sports we see no real limits on player endorsements. In my hypothetical scenario, Olano might have to appear in a commercial for Coca Cola or Twin City Radiator, but those companies could say that one $5 million commercial is estimated to bring in $20 million worth of business. And no outside body would have the authority to determine whether that’s true or a bunch of BS.

Agreed. The transfer portal and NIL has provided many more benefits than drawbacks.

Olano the starter that was mentioned by Bielema as leaving or is he referring to someone else?

Reading the article on Lopatti we have areal deal in the future of our qb position. Where is his 5th star. We are going to have fight off some big time programs. Dec 26 can't come to fast for signing day.

the free market regulates it and that solves the problem

College athletes simply arent worth the silly endorsement money you are throwing around or it would be happening now at 25% of those levels

I think as long as Lunney and Art are here … He’s ours … Truly believe that …

Now will the kid take other visits ? I’m sure … These kids are getting paid to take visits and take their families on free trips …

What I got told is that Olano was the one starter that Bret expected to transition …

Now that’s obviously subject to change now, but when the comment was made by Bret, Olano was who he was talking about …
the Osada lad who came in from UNC and still has 2 years and did the long kicking for us . He must be decent, or is this a major concern for staff for 2026?
