If the CFP has done anything well, it's enabling all major conference programs to recruit with the chance of making it, instead of how it was before when 5 programs took all the recruits and nobody else stood a chance.

Granted, some major programs have still dropped the ball, and mid majors are further behind than ever (basically instead of 5 tier 1 teams and a bunch of tier 2 teams that were beatable by mid majors, now it's effectively 3 tiers of teams, major contenders, major non-contenders, and mid majors).

That's not the mid-majors fault, though, so the media should get over trying to blame them for the problems with the CFP. JMU and Tulane weren't top 15 teams, but neither was Duke, and there's at least a chance some mid major sneaks up on a big boy in the future with the current format.

I do expect the playoff to expand to 16 as soon as next year, though, along with a guarantee that each P4 conference champ gets a bid (and maybe the ACC will fix their tiebreakers to better handle the extremely unbalanced schedules that are not going away).
Over the last 3 years there has been 28 playoff spots. 22 different teams made it.

12 final four spots, 11 different teams made it.

Over the last 4 years, 8 spots in the National Championship game. 8 different teams have made it. (No SEC teams unless Ole Miss beats Miami)

Bret and Cignetti have similar philosophies tbh. Indiana is an old team by CFB standards and Bret similarly values experience.

Cignetti's talent evaluation is just on another level right now.

I wouldn't be surprised if the non-AQ schools basically become a dev league for the P4.
I'm sure part of it is talent eval, but they just seem so well coached. Guys don't make mental mistakes. Don't miss assignments. Solid tackling. Position coaches are likely on everyone's list for poaching.

That right there says college football is doing great.

And there is no showboating. Just focus on and determination to win EVERY SINGLE PLAY. Very impressive. Rematch against Oregon will likely be a beautiful thing.

I truly believe the biggest difference between Illinois and Indiana is that Cignetti came in with a stellar coaching staff that already had a winning system and a large group of players from a team that knew and believed in the system.
Bielema came in and with no players and no staff. Basically start from scratch. Some hits and some misses on both talent eval and coaches.
But it's clear to me that Bret is building a winning culture, the talent eval is getting better and the recruiting as well. Some coaching fixes and we are getting somewhere.

Last 3 years: 28 playoff spots, 22 different teams

Previous 35 years: 90 playoff spots, 22 different teams (I roughly estimated but this is close)

The participation, activation of fan bases, interest is off the charts with the new structure.

Just depends on how you look at it.

1. Did you prefer the years that the 4 team playoff was some combination of Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, and Ohio St? That wasn’t very fun.

2. How many other schools are looking at Indiana and saying ā€œif they can do it, so can weā€? Which will create an additional layer of parody and in my opinion, improve the sport.

3. It shows what you can do with the right coach and right financial resources. We seem to now have both. So to me, it’s a good omen for the future of our own program.

4. If I was a Michigan fan, I’d like it a whole lot less. And I’m not going to agree with Michigan fans on anything.

I've eschewed all logical thought in this case.

Lol it seems finebaum is finally facing reality

Not just him but lots of SEC people are going to have a hard time adjusting to the new reality that the World no longer revolves around the SEC.

Feelings of entitlement die hard. They’ve had greater success than most anyone – and it’s been long overdo that lots of other programs finally get a real seat at the Big Chairs. The tables are no longer tilted toward the Southeastern USA. Time for some real (and more honest) competition among lots of (more) equals.

Media types will be forced to adjust first because they will have to... to maintain some kind of credibility. It’s the legacy SEC fans that are really going to have a hard time with this. It may take generations –if then. Roll Tide? Yesterday, more like LOL Tide.

It was a wise move when Texas A &M joined up with the SEC years ago. It was the hot Conference. And then the others who came over. But will they have second thoughts now that things are being equalized and go Conference-shopping once again? Would this ease their path to the Playoffs? You can bet the discussions just got started.

I'm amazed at how they always seem to call the right play - both on offense and defense. Did Cignetti lose any assistants last year? Will he lose any this year?

Not a lot of fans at the Liberty Bowl. Why do non playoff bowls still exist?

I've said this before, but you keep the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, and Fiesta Bowl, all others go away. Expand the playoff to 16 teams, and that gets you the top 24 in a Bowl game, everyone else goes to class. If you want to let everyone have the ability to practice until January, fine.

Oh no did I accidentally log into Hoosier Loyalty??

Indinia football rising from the absolute nuclear waste sh!t box from which it has resided for all of football eternity to become a national power in two years is the single most sickening turn of events in sports history.

Any other take is summarily dismissed with prejudice!🤨

They've looked SO good... like, really good in eye-test terms. I wonder -- now that the playing field has been levelled to some degree by $$$ -- if progams have started looking for other ways to gain advantages.

SEC bowl performance, with one team remaining:

Alabama 34, Oklahoma 24
Ole Miss 41, Tulane 10
Miami 10, Texas A&M 3
Virginia 13, Missouri 7
Houston 38, LSU 35
Illinois 30, Tennessee 28
Texas 41, Michigan 27
Iowa 34, Vanderbilt 27
Indiana 38, Alabama 3
Ole Miss 39, Georgia 34
Wake Forest 43, Mississippi State 29

So their best performance was either beating themselves, walloping a G5 Tulane team or overcoming a 4th quarter deficit to Michigan.
