NFL minimum for rookie is $840k goes to $1.25M for those with 7 years experience

24 kickers seem to make the experience adjusted minimum

Olano was a good kicker but limited to 50 yards . Some college kickers are hitting 55.

Of course Ohio State wishes they had Olano in the B10 championship game.

I am very curious

1. Will schools be able to fund $16-$20M player all sports payroll
2. Will the $NIL at crazy schools still be $30-$40M?

To be fair, if we're going to do the comparison to the NFL, the top kickers make $6M+ per year with a $250M salary cap, which is 2.4%. So, if our total budget is $25M for this year, we should be willing to pay $600K for a top kicker, which I think we would say Olano is, A&M's budget is certainly higher than ours, so they are likely paying him something like 2.4% of their total budget, so maybe they aren't as crazy as it may seems
Bingo… money wise. 400K was cheap if you break it down NFL style

We also have a 105 man roster. Butker is making 6 million but that’s definitely not the average
To be precise, 3 NFL kickers make over $6M AAV, 10 of them (almost a third of all kickers) make over $5M which is 2% of the cap. So translating that to our team, we should be willing to pay Olano $500K if we think he is in the top third of all kickers in college or $600K if we think he's top 10% of kickers.

My point is the NFL does value kickers and teams will pay 2-3% of their salary cap to get a good one. So, A&M is not so far out in left field paying a kicker $750K or whatever they offered Olano if they thought he was a top tier kicker (and he's shown that he is)

We also don’t know how high A & M was willing to go in a bidding war, do we? That being said, we better have a plan and not push the position aside like Mizzou did last year.

NFL teams have 295 million to spend
Yea but what you are missing here is the top end players change those calculations majorly for the NFL. Elite QBs are 40-50MM a year in the NFL (15-20% of the total roster). Illinois paid houser around 1MM, so we should have saved some cash there if our budget is even 10 million.

Bret has talked about Illinois using the NFL model for playing players. I’d rather be elite at a single position than mediocre at one, but with more depth at another. Just my stance. The staff was also okay keeping Hugh for years and how many games did his bad punting come into play?

How much longer are we going to debate the merit and value of kickers? Will the madness end?

This whole debate seems to be forgetting that kickers have a much more variable performance year to year than most positions. They’re a much less sure bet. All these arguments seem to be assuming you automatically win a close game on a kick if you’ve got a good kicker… just not necessarily true.

Look at the Ravens game, Boswell, one of the best kickers in the league, misses an extra point, followed by Loop, who I don’t think missed from under 50 all year, misses. Both teams thought they had good kickers, Boswell paid as such, both let their team down.

Players get paid based on replacement value, not just value, hence why running backs are so cheap in the NFL.

That’s where I could see the argument for colleges attributing a little more to kickers, since some college kickers really suck. But you really don’t know what you’re getting.

They paid more than 1m

How much is a win worth? Olano’s leg was the difference in at least 2 of our 9 wins this year. Were those worth $200 each?

I know it’s not that simple, but blockers win and lose games for teams all the time. If you got a good, consistent one, hard to see him go elsewhere.
