EDIT: I see I'm not the first one to post that, so to kind of say it another way, skepticism of your own roster is a very expensive problem to have in the current environment, and perhaps is a luxury outside our price range.

You could say we *kinda* did something like this before when we added JC Davis and Melvin Priestly in favor of homegrown options who have since transferred (which I complained and fretted about, naturally), but there's a volume involved here that feels like it ups that degree of difficulty even a bit higher.

Have any of the front seven players that transferred (other than Jeremiah Warren who had 3 tackles) , landed at a school that played in a bowl game last year? I think that answers the question of adequate compensation. The tranfers to Purdue? As for the players transferring, all were in rotation. We have 4 LB returning, so probably don't lose much there. Neal and McCullum leaving comes as a surprise.

Regardless he’s not going to see the nfl money Gabe will. So it’s important for him to get as much money as he can. Jamo is with him every day in practice and we didn’t view him as starter

So hold up.. it validates the staff if our former players transfer to bad power four programs. But us recruiting dudes from bad lower level programs isn’t an issue? Mccullom is gonna end up at A&M or another big ten program. Coenen will end up in the big ten.

If these front 7 guys go these other schools and put up awesome numbers, ok.

What if they go there and do exactly what they did here this year though?

Which one is more likely?

We chose the dt from penn over Coenen. You aren’t going to pay Coenen starter money to be a back up. McCollum we jury got out bid

If you have watched Indiana, have you noticed they never give up a sack or tackle for loss right up the middle ? Any success against them comes from the edges. So thats why I think our new center is the most necessary recruit after the qb . How many times did other teams come right down our middle for a negative play ? Also shows how desperatly we need some beast dline talent. Think we will see vast secondary improvment in 2026.

How do you know any of this? You're just guessing. How many snaps did Coenen take and McCollum take last season? What were their PFF? They were part of a rotation, not 30 snaps a game players. We had 5 miserable defensive games last season and all of the players transferring out were part (or not part depending on you perspective) of the underperformance.

If other schools want to pay rotating DL and LBs the same as a regular player or promise them more snaps than they had last season at Illinois, then the offer away is better. Illinois' strategy on Defense is to rotate players so not to depend on 12 or 13 individuals. Purdue, South Carolina, West Virginia were pretty awful last year. So they have a greater need for players similar to Jojo Hayden or Malachi Hood. But those two (as an example) are not "standout" players that we would buid a defense around.

This coaching staff has been together longer than any in the B1G and have been outpeforming the talent level Illinois can afford since the large increase in the NIL happened 3 years ago.

You might want to wait 3 or 4 games into next season before comparing incoming vs. outgoing players.

I know this because the dt from penn was a priority and he’s coming in to start. If they valued Coenen as a starter he would be here.
