If I'm Buzz Williams I tell my squad " don't poke the bear "............His players came in all cocky trying to play physical and throwing elbows and talkin smack and the bear starting to bite back to the tune of a 25-4 run midway of the first half on the way to a 89-70 home conference win........

season record : 16-3
B$G record : 7-1 and riding an 8 game winning streak...............

Andre S. with a personal Illini high game of 30 points and 9 rebounds.............
Jake Davis with 4 three's..............
Tomi with 9 pts , 7 rebs.........
Waglar with 13 pts ,7 rebs , 8 A.....
Mirko-Man with 15 pts , 9 rebs , 3 A and numerous bruises
Big Z with 2 F1 fouls.....a career high , I think................

All in all a great game played after the setback of Bam's injury but it showed the depth we really really have this season..........

We were up 27 and put in Fagbemi and AJ Redd before he came back in.
Before the 11-3 Maryland run at the end, the Illini defensive efficiency was very good, so that bodes well going forward.
It's a bit frustrating when this happens due to the metrics (and for some folks, the spread), as it was the entire 4min stretch to end the game. I think Torvik has a "garbage time" calculation so I'd hope this qualifies. Not sure if our DEff went up or down on Kenpom.

So you think we should play him ahead of guys that are better than him (just because we paid him a lot)?
Long time lurker (13 years or so), so much respect for you Combo to not pick on your post to make my first, just too good of a question to pass.

In my humble opinion, short answer yes. Not just off GP, but because we needed a lead guard and spent to bring him in for it. With the world of revenue sharing, spending money to sit him is bad roster/money management. It also brings questions to either the eval, the development, or something else. As a booster, when asking for money these types of things will be looked at more and more.

We knew he had defensive liabilities when he was signed, but we should develop schemes around his strengths and maximize them to play him as we do with other players. In the past and currently, players with defensive liabilities get a lot of tick.

Its not just about defensive liabilities its about attitude too. He drove, missed the ft (maybe was fouled) and complained to the ref instead of getting back. Then after getting back he wasn't paying attention because he had been pouting, went to guard the wrong man, and gave up a wide open 3 as a result. To make it worse he came off the court during the next timeout and brushed past the coaches when they tried to talk to him.

Alfonso Plummer was a guy with defensive liabilities but he played a lot because for all his faults, and after some rough moments, early he worked his tail off and gave 100% effort.

The only person Petrovic has to blame for not getting more minutes is himself.

Yeah, statistics after the "safe lead reached" point are discounted in some way. Today's game reached a safe lead at 78-53 with 7 minutes to go. Safe lead reached is a point at which no data points exist with that lead being overcome in that situation with those caliber teams.

- Good game though Maryland is not good. 1-7 in the big ten and one of their best players is miniature.
- I rolled my eyes on the elbow reviews until they showed them! Not even sure what the players were doing and why there were so many elbows that looked sort of intentional in this game.
- I'm happy brad finally acknowledged that Jake Davis gives us more than Ben and he was a lot tougher out there than I've ever seen. Maybe getting the start gave him an extra boost of adrenaline. Nice to see Ben hit a couple shots also.
- this team has some magic -- our games start out tight and then we're up by 20 and it doesn't even seem like we changed anything.
- AS was amazing tonight which made Mirk and Wagler have a quiet 15, 9 and 3 and 13, 7 and 8 respectively.
- Thought the refs gave us quite a few calls tonight.
- Again maryland is not good.
- @purdue is going to be rough without Boswell. Hopefully we can steal a win.

Good game tonight. Great win. Let's do it again on Saturday.
Will Andrej be as effective on Branden as he was on Diggy?

You have to play the guys that give you the best chance to win. College ball is an ultra competitive dogfight. What you're paying them becomes irrelevant once the games start.

You're really going to take minutes away from Keaton or Boswell (not right now) to play a guy that is not as good just because you're paying him a lot of money? At this point, I think Lee gives us as good or better chance of winning as Petro. I do really like that Petro looks to have some "natural PG" skills. But Keaton is so much better as our PG because he plays defense, rebounds, shoots in well, etc in addition to have good PG skills.

I couldnt agree more! That is bad and needs to be addressed. Big Z is my current favorite player on the court this season and he has issues that need to be addressed, but still gets more playing time. I think Plummer also played bc of the team’s need for his shooting.

On the flip side, I’d say they knew they were recruiting a pro and many pros even international have that immature aspect to their game. The staff is still responsible for grooming and developing him to the Big 10 and college basketball so the team can be it’s best.

If only the argument of playing someone because they are simply better than the others was consistent with the Illinois staff.

All the flagrant fouls they yet they missed the first obvious one. Keaton got wacked in the face by the Md player with his hand/forearm plain as day on a a rebound I think yet no whistle or review. I thought the rule was any contact above the shoulders by a players arm, elbow or hand was an automatic flagrant one.

Dude most people are talking about the end of the game.

Indy and his 25 "UNACCEPTABLE" comments during games are directed at anyone and everyone unless we're up by 20. He has an inordinate amount of venom towards AS....then he disappears whenever we go on a run or win outright.

During the Purdue thread, if we lose, he'll want the whole staff fired with personal comments towards a select few of his least desirable players built in between. It's the same thing every game.

He's an overly emotional fan. Can't hate on anyone for that though.
