Illinois 88, Purdue 82 Postgame

It's so great to listen to this guy and then go back and read the instant reactions from Purdue fans after that run of four straight threes. This was a heck of a lot more great offensive execution than it was bad defense. Forcing TKR to choose between Jake and Mirk on the near side, TKR makes the right choice in going after Jake but he can't cover both of them at once and Mirk splashes it.
That kind of execution starts at the recruiting level by getting five unselfish guys on the floor capable of making accurate, quick passes to get the open look, the coaching up and skilling up of players to get them to react instinctively and read the defense on the fly, and getting guys who care about each other and communicate with each other enough to orchestrate a play without error.
The lesson I take from this is that if a really good offense looks like it's just dismantling us and getting open looks, it's not necessarily because we suck at defense. Good offense just makes you look bad on defense.
I don't know exactly why, but seeing Ty in this makes me very happy. Screw the eligibility...he needs to come back and help this team win a Natty!

Well, still, I favor this game just slightly because of the impossible environment, our leader being out of this game( *Checks records * Yup, KB was still out
) and a FRESHMAN - an 18-year old! - putting up 46 against a juggernaut of a team, in THEIR building. Plus, this game literally made us the top offense in Kenpom history! Not the top offense of this season, not the top offense of the era, but in all of Kenpom HISTORY! This team has everything to do what so many amazing Illini teams of the past couldn't - give Champaign-Urbana our One Shining Moment we've been absolutely and eternally yearning for forever!
Mirk gave us a clue to his psyche when he threw a full court underhanded pass on a fast break in one of our first games.

In recent memory, the most comparable thing that comes to mind for me is the Carson Edwards elite 8 game versus Virginia. 42 points, 10-19 from 3.

I don’t care what Brad and Painter say, I watch every game, I can see, and read (and comprehend) the box scores. Watching basketball is way more than just watching the ball during the game.

Despite what was said in the post-game presser, Illinois is still as you say “chuck as many 3s as possible.” Our offense isn’t masterful and when shots don’t go down, it’s easy to guard and hard to watch. It is well documented as 5 and out. Despite being one of the tallest teams in the country, Illinois is in the top tier of 3 point attempts and in the bottom tier of 3 point average. We don’t average many assists per game.
If Wagler didn’t do a near-perfect Steph Curry impersonation, this game might have gotten ugly for us. He scored more than the rest of the team combined and did it with the 3-ball.

In our family group chat during the game, I made the comment that Keaton Wagler made himself a ridiculous amount of money (yesterday).
