I think the Sleepers guys are a fun listen when they do their bits, and I think Greg genuinely likes Underwood's offensive style and this team in particular. They aren't experts on anything, just fans with a podcast, which is fine! Much better than some of the college b-ball sleazeballs that I can't stand to read or listen to.

Here, I'll do a college basketball analyst/writer ranking:

Always read/listen: Matt Norlander, John Gasaway, Mike LaTulip, Robbie Hummel, CJ Moore, Dylan Burkhardt (even though he's a Michigan guy), Bart Torvik (who is, believe it or not, a Wisconsin guy), Ken Pomeroy, Evan Miyakawa, Jeff Borzello, Sam Vecenie, Erik Haslam

Enjoyable/harmless: Andy Katz, Seth Davis, Pat Forde, Jeremy Werner, Joey Wagner, Trilly Donovan, Sleepers guys (Greg, Carter, etc), Ricky O'Donnell (though he did steal my work once without credit), Brendan Quinn, Joe Lunardi, David Cobb, Kyle Boone, Myron Medcalf, Dan Wetzel, Clark Kellogg

Actively can't stand them/sleazy: Jeff Goodman, Gary Parrish, Jon Rothstein (holy crap, dude, your entire Twitter feed is just hocking your catchphrase t-shirts, enough already), anyone still working at SI, Nick Friedell, Bruce Pearl

Eye on College Basketball podcast is one of my favorites-- not sure if you guys who love Norlander and hate Parrish can even bear listening to it. I do get why many seem to dislike Parrish (the TSJ thing, his veering into politics, his relative lack of college basketball knowledge when compared to Norlander).

Goodman is the worst. Not a huge Rothstein fan but I appreciate that he does his weekly podcast throughout the year with interviews-- nothing like listening to a college basketball podcast in June. Doesn't really bother me that he wants to sell T-shirts.

I would have thrown Illini Guys into enjoyable/harmless. I like listening to Sturdy's comments... Ked is harmless but I wish I had a dollar for every time he says "I'm sorry, but..."

For those of you listening to ALL the podcasts this week, I would not neglect the Illini radio postgame show. Always a good listen minus 1-2 cranky callers and LaTulip is usually on there:

I listen to Illini guys sometimes. I like Sturdy (I have a long personal history with him), but Ked and Cagley are absolutely dreadful at podcasting.

Illini Inquirer is my go-to as well. But I do enjoy getting a "national" POV from an unbiased source. And while the Sleepers guys are hot-take artists and are more geared toward entertainment than providing expert analysis, I've found that they know more about our team and its daily goings-on than any other non-Illinois media.

Looking forward to their recap tomorrow. I expect them to fully give Illinois their flowers and their hot takes will be around how overrated Purdue is.
Illinois fans are starving for content and we are a good fanbase to have on your side. it's just my two cents on their schtick but I don't want to gate keep anyone's enjoyment especially around the Illini. winning is great and I'll soak it all up!

Parrish just always comes off as the guy in the group project who did no homework and just riffs off the cuff on others' work on those podcasts. Also got a real red flag vibe from the guy from the TSJ stuff.

Rothstein just comes off so fake. Nothing against merch and selling yourself, but it's completely over the top and nothing seems genuine from the guy. Like Gottlieb before he got hired to ruin Green Bay.

Sturdy and Ked are fine, along with Robert Rosenthal. Basically all the Illini guys are harmless, and LaTulip is the best of the bunch.

He (AS) just dropped 30 on Maryland a few days ago.
very aware of that...i want him to get back to at least a light version of that and stay consistent especially with Boz out

Point was that even though he had a bad game, he made a pivotal play...wasnt meant to be a criticism post, quite the opposite as there was so much negative chatter in the game thread........even one guy going as far as saying he isnt good enough for the Big 10 LOL

What we witnessed on Saturday by Waggler has not been done by a freshman in NCAA history. Beating a top 10 team, scoring over 40 by a freshman. I couldn't believe it when they announced it. We witnessed history. A restaurant in Champaign needs to hire him and offer a Waggler sandwich for $4:60. NIL $. Now beat Washington. The PU game will be aired on BTN at 9:30 pm eastern time.

most points scored ever (regardless of class) while beating an AP top 10 team on the road

I'm trying to think on why he'd have that take and the only thing that I can come up with is that Boswell would have been more ball dominant and Keaton wouldn't have gotten the volume of shots?

I guess there's some merit to it because the offense would definitely have run differently, but if he's going to go down the "what if' path, he needs to recognize that we're SIGNIFICANTLY better defensively with Boswell playing and maybe Smith scores 15 vs 27 with maybe a couple of more turnovers?

One note on stojakovic
Yes, he had a bad game..but I gotta give him props for this one thing after watching the extended highlights

Purdue hit an and one and foul shot to go up 11, the place was rocking and it looked like we might've been on our way to getting an !!!-kicking. That was the one play where Andrej took it to the bucket and hit a tough fading one hand bucket to end the drought.....then Davis hit his 3 the next play and we were back in it

Need him to get back on form next few games though
His foul on Smith was the most infuriating single play of the entire season, IMO.

I know there’s reason for it being a “bad matchup,” and I’ll believe that. It can certainly be a bad matchup having to check the best point guard in America, without Boswell. However, where that term doesn’t apply to me is discipline. You just cannot foul a three pointer shooter with the game on the line, in the final seconds.

I’m glad he didn’t compound it. He made sure to foul hard enough that ball had no chance of getting on the rim…

There was enough time left where yes, you can’t be in a spot to pick up a foul, period. But also, letting them walk right into a 3 to cut it to 1 would be bad too and we obviously caught a break smith missed 1.

I thought our coaching was great overall. But situationally, coming off the timeout after the Tomi 3 to make it 5, I wouldn’t have minded just straight up double teaming and trapping smith off both those ball screens. Make someone else make 3, while 2’s don’t really hurt you.

Just my take though. Easier said than to actually execute

I will always give them credit for being some of the most fair media people when it came to TSJ.

That being said, I don't see dishonesty with their coverage of the Illini. Greg is much more gushing while the rest are tepid or cautious for lack of a better word when it comes to our team.

Wagler was unstoppable. He was a (young) man amongst boys. He could have had 55 easy. Every time he wanted to, he was either going to hit a shot or go to the line.
He looked like an NBA starter who was on loan for this game.
As Andy Kaufman’s tutor, I’m somewhat glad he didn’t surpass Jacksonville’s finest on the single game scoring list. 😁

The debate can go on about wether Keaton Wagler is the greatest Illini freshman ever but there is no doubt he just had the greatest game of a freshman in Illini basketball history.

That is great. Thank you. I had been looking for a way to listen to this show.

Does anyone have a link to the post game show that directly follows the game with Deon and crew? It is on before the Fasteners post game show and often has their own interview with the coach and a few players. Basically just goes from them calling the game live for a while after the game (before Fasteners post game show).

Link?
