I’m not sure if this is a good hire or not, but I don’t think him leaving Montana because he didn’t like dealing with things that took up a solid portion of his time and energy as HC is part of the equation. He’s not going to be dealing with those things at Illinois. He’ll now be able to spend the large majority of his time on the aspects of coaching he enjoys. Let’s hope we like the results.

I know it’s one game but watching the semi’s between Montana and Montana St, Montana gave up 449 total yards, 240 on the ground. Their line could not get close to the MSU QB and every running play got to the secondary with ease. It looked like the same crappy defense we played all year. Open receivers, running plays that gained 6-7 yards a carry. QB had all day to throw. Hauck went from a 3 man front to a 5 man front with very little success. Call me unimpressed with this hire. I hope I am wrong

Watching some Montana 3-3-5, and seeing a lot of bodies near the line, getting pressure. I’m no expert, but looks like a defense that requires a lot of coaching and player smarts.

A very successful head coach who has taught this scheme to players and coaches for years. He gets a significant raise without the headaches of recruiting as a HC. You’ll see a much different style of defense next year.(I’m trying to figure out if he called the defense when he became a HC or not) but overall I think it’s a solid hire.

Agree with this ...

Just one thing missing......

And from where do we get these uber athletes?
might take a year

I would think there is lotsa playing time for rs frosh & true frosh

it always takes a lil time when implementing a new D scheme .

where would they have come from if Partridge was hired ?

I like it, unconventional but the experience element is what I like, do we think he will call the plays?

Wonder what X and Matt Bailey are thinking right now....
It’s sounds like it is going to be a more aggressive defense so I would assume any defensive player would love to play it. Who wouldn’t want a crack at rushing the QB? If this scheme has roots in what Seattle showed last night I am all for it. We were too passive a defense last season. I have never liked bend but don’t brake defensive schemes.

Quite the pivot. Definitely something new. It's a risk but has high reward. I like it. He's not going to recruit much, if any, just coach and develop. Seems like the base defense will be new and similar to what Seattle runs.

I even think bringing his brother on the staff would be a positive too with his experience.

Very interesting.
